    This theory of atonement - Governmental Theory- reminds me of something Paul wrote;
    Col 2:8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through PHILOSOPHY
    I wonder if anyone could teach this theory just using the First Testament Scriptures???

    Well.... close. Jesus didn't display what we deserve as a punishment for our sin. Jesus showed the effect our sin has upon God. God, wanting to be reconciled to man, needs to persuade man to give up his love of sin and return (in repentance) to Him. After centuries of attempts at this by the 'carrot and the stick' (rewards or punishments), God resolved to instead display the effect of sin, not upon man (his just consequences), but the effect it has on Him. Jesus literally displayed the agony God goes through at the hand of sinful man, and Jesus showed God's love of the law (the law of love) by responding to His rejection the same way He said we should - turning the other cheek, blessing not cursing, laying down His life for others.
    By doing the above Jesus solved the problems God had in passing over (forgiving) the sins of mankind. What were those problems?
    #1 Mankind has a wrong and unhealthy view of himself and his own self-worth, and the rightness of his actions.
    #2 Mankind has a wrong view of God and the rightness of His demands.
    #3 Mankind needs a strong example of the awfulness of sin (what man's sin does to God and others) so that he does not return to a lifestyle of sin again.
    #4 The moral universe (mankind, angels, any other moral agents) need a display of God's love for His law so we retain confidence in His rule.

      @@kingdomseekers1973 God might not need anything to help Him continue to exist, I agree. He did accomplish the Atonement for some reason, and Romans says one of those reasons was to justify God. (Rom. 3:26) Apparently without the Atonement, in some sense, God would have been unjust. So He did need the Atonement to happen to continue being just.
