Congratulations once again, Andrew. Another example of your practical ingenuity. Very impressive.
That is such a great design! Spacious too. Thank you for showing us this roof tent in detail. With spring coming, you will be enjoying it. I am sure you will make even better photographs now 😉 cheers.
Holy moly - $6,000 for a roof-top tent. It is out of my league, no matter how well built it is.
Hey mate, very happy to see your video again. Very good, very detailed introduction, I like it very much, I hope you all go well and stay safe. Always look forward to your next video, thank you Andrew :)
Really nice setup Andrew. I was impressed how quick it is to set up and pack down. Build quality looks pretty impressive also.
CONGRATS..what a great set up you now have..looking forward to following your adventures!!
Thanks for that Helen, I'm pleased with how it's come along. I'll be focusing on getting out before the heat comes in.
One of the coolest vehicles customised for photography. When you showed those overhead drone shots on the beach Andrew, just kept thinking how wonderful and peaceful that would be to wake up to the view and the sounds of the ocean. hope you have many happy adventures in your rig
Thanks Jimmy, one of the greatest things about camping on the beach is the morning views and the sounds of the ocean. We have to travel well out of the city to be able to drive onto the the beach, but lucky for us, we have plenty of beach in Western Australia! 👍
Great review, thank you.
Very nice setup Andrew - simple se-tup/pack-up is certainly the way to go for travelling photographers.
Thanks for sharing your overlanding setup. Seems like a quality rooftop tent.
Cheers Michael, glad you enjoyed the video. The RTT has been a great addition to the setup!
Very nice tent...great ideas and very practical...congrats! Cheers...
Congratulations on the upgrade! This tent has a lot of great features. The all package with the vehicle and canopy is a photographers dream setup for traveling. Looking forward to seeing your next adventures.
Thanks Luísa, I'm really happy with how it's turned out! It's been great to build a rig with my photography in mind. It's certainly made trips easy and more comfortable. Next adventure is just around the corner! 👍
great review, thanks for sharing
Fantastic setup. It's on my bucket list :)
Awesome rig 👍🏼👍🏼
Hi Andrew, nice setup. Check out emp underlay for under your mattress, instead of a quilt, it lets air circulate under the mattress. I've been using it my RTT for about 4 years now and it works great. It will be interesting to here your comments when you have camped in some very strong wind. I lived in WA for 10 years I know how windy it gets.
Thanks for the tip Brad, I'll check out those underlays. It does get windy here in WA (some say WA stands for "Windy Always"). I've spent one night in the tent in windy conditions near the coast and the tent performed really well. I turned the car around so the top of the tent coped most of the wind. I'll be interesting to so how it performs with the wind coming in form the other direction. Thanks again for your comment.
Looks a great setup Andrew. Looking forward to seeing some of your adventures.
Cheers Brian, I thought you'd be interested in this mate. Next adventure is just around the corner! 👍
@@kevinfrancis2245 Hi Kevin. You might need top repost this direct to Andrew ensure he sees it! I'm in a wet, dark and locked down UK.
That's a very impressive setup Andrew! Looks awesome!
Thanks Ben, as you know a good night sleep can make all the difference with how successful the photography will be the next day. I'm really please with how the setup is coming along, cheers! 👍
Beautiful camera work and the tent looks like a beauty. Camp king seem to do some really good quality stuff! Top work andrew as always!
Thanks Pete 👍 appreciate the feedback mate! Yeah top quality, I'm very proud this is Aussie made 🇦🇺🦘
Blimey, that’s a quick tear-down! Having used Eezy-awns many times, this looks so much quicker by comparison. Solves the problem of a roof-tent, i.e. having to pack it away before moving off in the vehicle in the morning. With this it’s done in seconds! I might stick with my wee camper van for the climate up here in Northern Scotland though!
Man that’s an awesome setup! We just bought an rtt for our photography trips as well. The speed of setup and takedown of the hard top tents are a huge reason why we got it. Great video man! -Mike
Cheers Mike, I'm really happy with the way it's coming together. Congrats on the RTT that will be perfect for your photography, can't wait to see it!👍
my mouth is watering with envy Andrew ! excellent review and an awesome 4x4 rig you have their mate, fantastic ! :)
Thanks very much Greg, really appreciate your feedback mate. It's taken a while but I'm stoked with how it's all come together.
I'm Definitely getting one of these in the next 12 months!!! Love it!!!
Thanks for that, it's an awesome addition to the rig...highly recommend it! :)
That looks like a great setup for outdoor adventures. Are the gas struts lockable to prevent accidental folding? I would be vary of sleeping under say 40kg lid...
Nice setup mate. Hard to beat a rooftop tent.
Great to hear from you mate, hope you are well. Yeah, I'm really enjoying the addition of the RTT. How's the FJ Cruiser coming along?
Hi Andrew, informative clip. Like Adam G, I am also interested in how your RTT was mounted. Looks like the RTT mounting rails weren't used, instead, the attaching hardware was mounted directly from the canopy roof rack nut runner channels to new holes drilled into the bottom of RTT. Orange spacers provide the clearance for the RTT mounting rails.
After 12 months how is everything holding up?
That''s a top bit of kit you have there! My partner and I had a fold over RTT for a bit but found it very cumbersome and fiddly to pack away like you mentioned. Looked at other options of roof tents but on a Prado the hard shells just don't seem to fit well and we couldn't justify the cost and weight up top. Ended up going with an Oztent instead. I'm curious as to where this was filmed? It looks like Wellington Dam? Cheers and thanks for the great video. Keep up the great work!
Cheers mate, yeah there’s a big range out there for RTTs. The Camp King Industries has been a great addition to the set. I can see how this looks like Wellington Dam but it was filmed up in Gnangara-moore River State Forest
Great review. I'm considering the same tent. Did you buy it from Camp King's WA distributor, Go Camping & Overlanding in Balcatta? Did they also fit it to your rig?
Hey mate. Really appreciate this video. I have the same car as you and have just recently had the same canopy from Norweld installed.
I’m looking at CampKing RTT as well. Did you have to modify the canopy side doors so that when they open they don’t hit the RTT as the RTT is just slightly wider than the canopy itself.
Thanks again for a great video and excellent setup.
Nice one mate, I'm sure you're enjoying the canopy and the Camp Kings Industries RTT will be a great addition. There was no need to modify the canopy for the RTT. The tent fits perfectly between the doors (with the doors open). Speak to Conor at Camp Kings Industries. He's right across all of the measurements and can help out with mounting options.
Can I get some details on how you mounted it to the uni strut ?
How is it compared to the Alu Cab or Bush Company?
Hi Andrew, have you had any problems with packing it up wet?
nice review have you packed it in in the wet? does it wet the bedding?
Cheers Stefan, thanks for popping by and checking out the video. I've packing it up twice now in the wet, and you do have to be careful with the bedding. I've found that it helps to zip up all the windows and doors. This dramatically reducing the amount of moister that gets into the bedding. With a quick air out the next day, you'll be good to go. I've been impressed with how quick the tent dries. Thanks again mate, loving your channel, very helpful!
@@Andrew_marr thanks for answering mate, currently debating which HT RT will go on my Camper Trailer so first hand experiences are always good. Thanks for the compliments, you do some beautiful photography mate.
Hi Andrew, I'm in the market for a RTT and have shortlisted three candidates.. this Camp King, a James Baroud or iKamper. Curious to know if you'd considered any of these in your research and if so why you chose to go with the Camp King?
Hi Josh, I did consider these RTTs. I hired a Ute for a week that had a James Baroud tent and found it wasn't that easy to close. The version that's similar to this shape actually opens at the short end over the cab as well as the high end. It required two people to close which just didn't suit my solo travels. I looked at the iKamper, the version that opened to the side. To be honest there seemed to be too much fuss set up the door. I'm not a fan of style use the metal rods as springs to keep the cover over the door up. They'll just flap too much in the wind. The poles used for the Camp Kings is rigid and doesn't flap in the wind. The JB and iKamper are lighter, but the extra weight didn't worry me and hasn't been an issue. Finally the Camp Kings is Australian made, high quality...couldn't be happier!
Hi Andrew, really good review mate. I purchased the Camp King 12 months ago, just before Covid19. What with other commitments and motorbike trips. I haven't had the chance to use it. I previously had a Kings Kwicky, which are okey until they crack up ( 2 within 12 months). I have a problem with the C K that it seem to get moisture in it which then makes the bedding go mouldy. Not sure if it's due to a leak somewhere or condensation. Have you had any problems with damp inside. I live on the NSW Central Coast so rainfall is higher than WA. I have even installed a lowline whirly vent, but still find damp when opening. Your thought would be much appreciated. Cheers DJ
hi Dave, so I've had this RTT in a range of conditions, from dry heat, to cool and wet to hot and humid. I've never had any issues with inside getting any moisture in it when the tent is closed. It's permanently on my car, sitting in the driveway and it had about 90mm of rain in November, half of that was in about 4 days and not a drop made it inside. When I'm using it and it's open up, it had moisture from the humidity settle on the canvas and condensation when the night are cold, just from me breathing inside the tent. That's going to happen with any tent, even my hiking tent is drenched in the morning from this. If you close the RTT up when the canvas a just a little damp the dampness with go through out your bedding inside. A RTT can be much harder to dry because it has to be left on and it's attached to your car. However, I do everything I can to ensure it's as dry as possible. The worse it's ever been was when I went up to the Kimberley and the tent would be saturated in the morning with the near 90+% humidity. I'd leave it up as long as I could in the morning (some mornings we were up and on the road by 4:30am. When we reached our next destination, I'd open the tent back up (a matter of a few seconds) and let it dry. This is what I'd do with any tent, particularly canvas. Getting in to this practice, I haven't had any issues with dampness or mould inside. One other thing I do is regularly remove the bedding and put it out the air, again just good practice to get into, I used to do that with my camper trailer as well. Hope this helps mate! 👍
@@Andrew_marr Thanks Andy for your reply. I fitted a solar panel to the top on special panel corners brackets etc, direct to the lid with pop rivets. Maybe that's were the water is getting in. Cheers DJ
Hey Andrew, what’s the overall height of the car with the roof top tent fitted to the canopy?
Thanks for you comment Ethan. I haven't checked since last year, but I'd still be under GVM weight (3,500kgs). I plan to weigh it soon, with it all loaded up.
Where do I find more info on your kitchen/storage set-up?
Thanks Sharon, I've done a walk-through video of the setup here - ua-cam.com/video/bXaao5WPKDk/v-deo.html this was about a year ago when I had just set up the rig. I plan on doing an update video next year to provide some feedback on how things have performed.
Hi Andrew how heavy is the tent?Do you have to get it ship to Perth?
Hey mate, it’s around 90kgs. I’m not sure about shipping. They just ship to the shipping company’s warehouse to keep costs down.
What is the weight of the tent?
Some of your zippers look broke? I can see light coming through a couple areas.
I think I'd kill myself when I have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night :) Or maybe just pee out the tent opening :D
Haha, desperate times call for desperate measures. The way the canopy ladder lines up with the tent, it creates a small platform that makes it easier to find your footing. After the first time it becomes much easier 😉 cheers!
It's a good tent and I love the height inside, as someone short 164cm I would be able to stand up and get dresses, that said, I think they really need to improve on this design and incorporate an awning that covers the side windows so that it will shield you from the rain while still keeping the window open nearer the top of the tent.
