Wireless Servo Steering for Trolling Motors

  • In this video, I review the upgrades made to the BC Products Trolling Motor Servo Kit for Kayak or Boat. This video illustrates an added speed controller option that adjusts the servo motor speed for optimum use. The installation procedure of the kit is the same as explained in a prior video (see link below). This is a great product that I recommend for those unable to construct their own or searching for a professional appearance.

    Im going to make an DIY autoboat with this idea . Its rare that nobody has try it yet. You just need to add a flight contoller with inav or ardupilot and will have a full autonomous kayak with anchor mode, return to home and waypoints.

      I have seen some prototype info using the ardupilot but not at a production level yet. If I had the knowledge and skills I would have tried. i hope you get it working.

    Hello! I really enjoy watching all you video's! So i decided to convert a Minnkota 34/36 12vdc. With all your recommended components. Everything went well, thanks to you and your vids! However i have one issue, that i'm not sure what to do. I hope you can help. Issue that its having is when i move the joystick to the left, nothing happens? The 3 other positions work great. Any suggestions would be awesome! Thank you

    I ordered the BC Products kit this month of July. As you noted, the one page instructions included provides very little information. So, I have the kit, the DS5160SSG 60kg Servo and a HOTRC DS-600 RC Transmitter. My wishes are to have remote steering (if I can't master with that then why try to add speed control). Without any ESC speed controller, How do I covert my 24V power down to 8.4V? Without that instruction I may have to toss it and quit trying.

    Since the Hobbywing 880 ESC is overkill for a single brushed 40 amp motor, why not use the Radiolink Cool 9030 90A Bushed ESC. It's $5 cheaper and offers programming using jumpers instead of a programming card. That's another $10 saving. It also offers a 5amp 7.5 volt BEC. So you can simplify your wiring and save another $29.
    I just ordered the HotRC DS-600 Wireless Controller, so I don't know much about it. But isn't there a way to program the controller to vary the servo speed? If so, that would save another $32 and simplify the wiring. All my RC airplane controllers allow me to program speeds of my servos.

      I'm sure that there are less expensive alternatives but the 880 ESC has a proven track record. The 880 has more useful programming options that I have used. The 880 also powers 2 motors which I have used in several projects. The HOTRC only varies the speed with incremental joystick moves.

    Hi, first thanks for the great videos! On the latest Wireless Trolling Motor video, you list a Servo Power supply that is no longer available. I saw one comment asking if the 12VDC source needed to be reduced to 8.4vdc and your reply was the servo controller provided the correct voltage. Did I understand this correctly? Is the Servo PS no longer needed?

      The ESC sends the required voltage.

    I am using a 12 volt starting/deep cycle battery to power this wireless remote controlled steering setup. I see that the Hobbywing Quicrun 880 needs 6 volts and the servo motor needs 8.4 volts. Do I need to use a regulator or convertor between the battery and the esc to bring the voltage down? If so, which one would you suggest and what voltage rating should it have ? How about between the esc and the servo motor? Thanks!

      No, the ESC regulates the voltage.

    Will this installation work with only a brushed-motor trolling motor or will it work with a brushed or brushless motor? If I get a trolling motor with a brushless motor, do I need to get a brushless servo and a brushless esc? Will the Hot RC DS 600 remote work with a brushless servo and brushless esc? Thanks!

      If you get a brushless motor you just need to buy an esc designed for it that can handle the current of that specific motor. Everything else stays the same . Esc are designed for specific types of motors and currents

    Its there a way to lock the steering? Looks like the hotrc controller just lock the speed. Are you using the trimmer for that ?

      The joystick does not lock the steering position. I suppose if you used a pot instead you could lock it but the stick acts as a kill switch too. The trimmer acts as a speed controller to smooth out the servo movements.

    Strictly speaking, this is NOT a servo because you can't move the motor in small increments to precise locations. From an anglers perspective, this is pretty awesome, but with an *actual* servo, you could have an Arkanoid style paddle that corresponds 1:1 with position / direction of the motor.

      Yes, it does work great for this application. As for calling it a servo, both manufacturers of the components use that term.

      @@Aksmaniyak now THAT i didn't know! I spent a few hours today researching Synchros and Servos because i was dreaming of something electronic but still a little more precise. :)

      @@Aksmaniyak I love the simplicity of the 2-channel remote setup! But i'm also an electronics nut and know there's a way to make the remote control be 1:1 and VERY snappy by using a different control scheme. A synchro/servo setup would be electromechanical and VERY reliable, but the parts are pretty obscure at this point. Servos and steppers are available which would be ALMOST as accurate, using a potentiometer for input. The key difference is that the remote would work like a steering wheel, where the position of the wheel sets the position of the motor. With a synchro, there would even be force-feedback from the servo on the motor!

    Of the two types of motorized steering, the Servo type in this video or the motorized gearbox in a previous video, how do they differ in performance. The motorized gearbox is a lot less expensive.

      Yes, the gearbox is definitely less expensive. I like the gearbox version better but the servo type is more waterproof/resistant.

      I chose mine as overkill but you should check the specs yourself to be sure.

      Nothing. It is for the servo motor.

      @@rickasisco Ok, now I understand. That box is sealed and came with the kit. I'm sure it's just an adjustable UBEC set at 6V circuit like I used in another project.

      @Aksmaniyak ive looked at all of the videos. What is the model of the controller? This is my first time attempting to make one of these and would like to make sure I have everything i need right. Or is the speed controller not needed ?
