Wow! That was probably the best DIY video I've ever seen. I don't have a 4Runner but you still gave me some ideas for my own rig. Thanks!
I know this has been up for over a year, but I'm looking to do this to my T4R that I got just this year. Really appreciate you putting this video together. Very helpful!
I don't have a Toyota, but the methods you are showing translate well to other platforms. Thanks for detailed video.
Helpful hint - for the "Front Legs" instead of trying to find the "Dowel Centers" at your local Home Building Supply, just do this: Take the original bolt from the existing bracket, and place them in the 1/4 inch holes drilled in the fabricated plywood front legs. The head of the bolt will serve to indent the plywood base when you smack it down (as shown in the video). To add another level of certainty, I scraped a piece of chalk across the top of the bolts before doing the smack down. A nice pink hexagon indented onto the underside of the plywood base. Easy!
Great Fabricating. Better than most shops!
Hell ya wood , metal work and over landing . Makes me happy
Hey guys, I followed this video exactly for my 2015 SR5. Thanks so much for your details and adequate lighting.
I just found your channel. I'm a Jeep owner with 2 Jeep Wrangler Unlimiteds (I drive one, and my wife drives one), but most of this I can translate to Jeep use. Great content. Thanks.
Always great videos. Your measurements were spot on and helped speed up my build. Only place I veered off course was using 3/4” ply and the finish. I reused the factory carpet and padding to keep my pup happy. Turned out great. Keep up the good work.
So I've been watching y'all videos and taking notes and putting my own spin, but it's been taking long to finish... Little by little. 😎😎 Thank you so much for these video's.
Very well done. Best walk through video I have ever seen. I’ll be following this video when I make my base plate this weekend
I love the attention to details and how well the videos are made, they must have taken you a very long time which is greatly appreciated! Just recently got a new 4runner and your videos are very useful and helpful. Thank you
Great video! Not too mention nice work on the platform. Lots of great tips and things to be aware of when doing this type of installation. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the video. Its one of the only videos to add a base to a 5th gen 4runner. I can't wait for the drawer system. I'll be removing the OEM slide out tray and doing this to my 2011.
Awesome! Thanks for watching. Plans for the drawers are well underway!
Great video! How 'bout I just bring my 4Runner over to you and you do the work? This is a seriously difficult diy project. Way above my skillset.
I won't do the work for you but you can still come over. We'll have a beer and talk about it. In the famous words of Rob Schneider; "You can do it!"
If you two ever want to explore Eastern Oregon my fiance and I would love to have you at our ranch and take you on some trails. We've been following your channel for a long time. Happy 4x4ing!
Thanks for the invite!!!! But beware, we may just take you up on your offer. :)
@@WanderlostOverland we host 4x4 trail run events every season of the year, so we might have enough experience to be able to handle a rambunctious couple like you! I don't know which rig I want to see more though, the FJ or the 'Runner...
Now that’s an amazing platform. The leveling is where I struggled.
Yup, that's one of the more "technical" parts of the design. Thanks for watching!
Nice work, great planning and skills in the shop.
Glad I stumbled upon this channel! One of the best DIY videos I've seen for Overlanding..
I've been searching for video like this all week, and here y'all go making it a reality on a channel I already subscribe too. LOVE IT.
Great video! Thank you for sharing your process. Really helps as I plan on tackling on a similar project.
Awesome video. Thx. I laughed at the foam and router (I've been there . . .)
You all did it again!!
This is great! I just subscribed. I've seen a few of your videos pop up on my feed here and there, and I've enjoyed all of them. Also, I just picked up a 2013 4Runner Trail, so the 4Runner videos especially interest me. This is really cool, I like all the attention to detail and the clever thought process you put into this. Mine came with the stock factory slide out, it's rated to hold 440 lb. I'm thinking I could probably just ratchet strap the fridge right to that. Just curious, if you would had the slide out, would you have done something similar, or do you prefer the setup that you use for your own fridge? Actually, I wonder if I could mount tracks like yours to the slide out, to have even more clearance. Hmmmm....
We really can't say what one way or the other since we've never had any experience with the factory tray. If it were us; we would probably do what you suggest, strap the fridge down to the tray and try it. It may work perfectly fine for you, or not. :) Thanks for watching!
Hello, I have a question. In the assembly part, there are no front legs on the final asaambled plywood. Why so? You refused to use them?
Great to see you guys! Perfect mod 👍 great job. The FJ and the Runner look'n good😊
wow.... I wish I was just as handy as you guys :) Great Job, you have a new subscriber :) Cheers from Don, Perth W.Australia (Dons Shed and Xplor Overland)
Totally entertaining, AND informative. thanks for posting.
I have been watching for sometime now and as always I enjoy your clean clear thought out instructions -- Great DIY!!!!! I have the cfx75 also -- what slider did you use in the video? Thanks again for putting quality DIY out there for all of us!!!
Thanks for watching! We have the slider from Dometic. It's bomb proof!
Holly st!t....where the heck have you been!?!? Great vid, keep them coming!
Hello, I have a 4Runner 5th gen and the Dometic CFX75 Fridge also but from my measurements it wouldn't be able to fit in the back like yours does. The fridge slider measures 38" while I only measured 34.5" deep for my trunk space. Is it because your center seats stay folded down? Or is my slider's (Alu Cab XL) design too long?
It sounds like your slider is too long. Ours fits with the back seats up. Our slider is a Dometic brand.
Good well made video , thanks for your explanations, Great job.
Wow awesome work! Are you guys doing one for the FJ? So that i can get an awesome video instruction haha
Im glad I saw your video. I was in process of cutting plywood base with s track tie down rails. I was thinking it would prevent movement of gear and stuff from tipping. I wasnt thinking of anchoring the plywood to truck, rather just placing the wood on top of stock cargo liner. Glad I didnt start cutting $30 plywood because your system is superior. Now in reconsidering my original plan.
I'm not thrilled with cutting plastic trim. Since I'm installing on-track, I probably just not reinstall that front plastic piece. Any reason its needed other than the 2 tie down points?
We debated cutting it and putting it back in too. It really doesn't serve any purpose other than aesthetics. Thanks for watching!
Another great detailed video on how to do it yourself. Approximately what was the cost for this modification?
Current working on building this based on your video, any tips for where I am drilling through the floor to align with the feet? Thanks!
Great video, I was just looking at doing the same type of thing today. Thanks for the tips. Where did you get the tray for the fridge? Brand and cost?
Thanks for watching! The tray is Dometic and costs around $300. A lot of money but it's built to withstand anything.
I have the same slider and fridge. Did you encounter any issues with the release catch on the slider hitting the tail gate when it's closed. On my TRD Pro the wedge piece trim stops the fridge going back far enough into the cargo area.
Great detailed video thanks for taking the time to share.
Thanks for watching! Ours fits nice with no issues but, there's no room left over. The catch is within an inch of the hatch.
Excellent work!
Thanks! and thanks for watching!

Saludos desde Chile🇨🇱.Excelente vídeo.
Great video....wondering if the rear seat reclines with cfx75 there?
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately the 75 is too big to allow the seat to recline. :(
Beautiful & well done!
Nice work guys.
So I just watched a video where somebody installed a goose products base plate. Yours seems so much more well-thought-out and sturdy. It's laughable the way the goose one attaches, it has little sheet metal brackets that bolt underneath the factory tie-down hooks, and have two threaded holes that the plate in turn mounts to.
We weren't too impressed with their design either. We expect all our mods to be able to stand up to the harshest conditions. Thanks for watching!
Love you guys. Learning a lot that I will be using in my own build. Just one question. You used 1/2" plywood. Do you fee that 3/4" would be too thick, or what? Also, do you feel it is possible to just completely fill the cavity beneath the "base plate" say with solid foam or perhaps spray foam? Just filling the void.
We went with 1/2" for the weight savings. Spray foam is interesting.
do you happen to have plans or a bill of materials for this and the kitchen? We love your project and are trying to follow along on our 4runner
Love the vids. Keep it up!
Great detail and explanation! Do you mind sharing the brand of the spray on liner you used? Thanks!
We used Krylon for this but we can't seem to find it anymore. Now we use the Rustoleum brand. It's excactly the same stuff.
I am playing with the idea of doing this for a smaller fridge/freezer. I am guessing I can watch the video about another dozen times taking notes and I should be able to pull this off. My question is, if I put 1/8 thick spacers under the slide could I trim up that piece of carpet and leave the exposed floor carpeted or for that matter, could I just put the carpet back in place entirely before putting on the slide?
Great video. Is the the table saw broken? First time I've seen someone cut plywood with a circular saw on a table saw. :)
Ha ha, he must have been demoing for us poor chaps who can't afford table saws :D
I'm trying to come up with a design for my Jeep JKU. This base plate design was great and I think I can apply all of it to the wrangler, and built up from there. Thanks!
Nice job, looks like you had more hours in the that base than the engineers have in a space shuttle flight.
Great job. Feel like making a few extra bucks and doing mine?
Hey, did you document your dimensions at all other than in the video? I'm debating on this or the Goose Gear and would love to save money. Thanks as always.
What fridge slide are you using in this video? I want to purchase one for my ARB50 but don’t really like the ARB slide.
Is there any chance you have the measurements from the front legs (the dowel rod trick)? IE - where to drill the holes in the platform?
When idling, this squeak/humming noise that is pretty inconsistent is coming from the area that seems to be around the gas tank. You can hear it with the window down or outside. Do you have any idea what it is? Keep in mind that it may not be the tank area just that’s where it is loudest.
We have no idea. You'll need to get underneath and pinpoint where the noise is coming from.
Great job on the video Mark & Merrion. Thanks for the commitment to the overland community.

Shoulda have a link where to buy the one you used.
This is probably an incredibly stupid question but, how do you prevent water from compromising the interior through holes that you have drilled through the floor??????
Not a stupid question at all. We use wide, flat washers that seal very good against the floor. One could take it a step further and put silicone caulk around the holes as well.

Thanks for your help, T-shirt has been ordered:). Do you guys have any patches????? I would love one if you do.
Thanks for donating to our fundraiser! We don't have patches or anything really. This whole t-shirt thing right now was thought up on a whim and once it's over, it's likely over for good or for at least a long time. But who knows, maybe someday. Stay tuned!
Ok, just wanna say Thanks a ton for this video. I watched it, like a million times, and used it to build my own platform. then i used the platform base as the base for my two drawer system with sleep platform on the 60% (passenger side) of my 4runner. Basically, I combined your video with the video from Solid Wood Worx found here ua-cam.com/video/4H5cbZ822os/v-deo.html to build my own 5th Gen 4runner sleep platform. Totally comparable to the Goose Gear system, which costs $2500. Cost me about a 5th of that (maybe less). Now i have a full 80" x 32" bed which i can remove and install the sleep extension using only 3 wing nuts. Keep in mind, my 60% side rear seat bottom is totally removed with this setup. I plan to build another sleep platform portion that keeps the seat bottom in place so it can be used in a 4 person trip and the sleep platform can be installed and removed when one passenger wants to sleep.
Anyway, sorry for the long comment. Just wanted to say how much I appreciate what you guys do in your videos and how much I have learned from you guys. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! We'd love to see pictures of what you've come up with. Post 'em up on our FaceBook.
how would you locate the mounting holes without the dowel rod centering thingamybobs?
Hi! I met you guys at one of the Chitown4x4 events....Any chance you build and install one on my 4runner? Please give me a quote if you can. Thanks!
I'm sorry Derick, we have a policy to not offer anything we do or make into a commercial endeavor. I bet Joe at Chitown can fix you up with something.
Great stuff. I'm looking forward to your collaboration with Primal Outdoors on that KIA Telluride build.
Hey guys, does the bedliner give off any smells when it’s hot out?
It gives off a slight smell for a few weeks. We did a second one and before installing it we let it dry outside for a week. That helped a lot to reduce the length of smellyness.
Do you think there is an alternative finish that will do well? One guy suggested to stain it and maybe clear coat it? I think with stain the wood may get gouged but you can touch up the stain easily.
I would have used adjustable flat based screws
Great job guys !
Looks great can you come and do my 4runner. I'll buy ya a case of beer. Lol
Oooo im copying you on my FJ!
I'm guessing that fridge is too large for a tilt slide?
@@WanderlostOverland Thank you for the reply! Lots of youtubers don't.
Quality
with the cfx75 and slider on there, can you still use all the back seat? thanks
Yup, we made sure we could when we designed everything. There's even plenty of room for air circulation around the refrigerant unit.
This is almost certainly the best instructional video I've ever seen. Very well done, I can't thank you enough.
