Watched John many times when he starting out, even in a small club the sound was unbelievable, around 1970.

    R.I.P. Mr. Music.
What a talent. When you consider there was basically 1 verse, and he turned that one verse into a song of epic proportions. Incredible.
I'm well into my 70's now, and probably not much longer for this world, and as an ex-musician for most of my life I've left instructions for this to be played on the conclusion of my funeral.
    Thanks for posting.

I was there when John performed his epic masterpiece at the 1999 Night Of The Proms in Antwerp. I'll never forget that amazing performance! The proms will never be the same without John Miles. Rest In Peace❣

One of the most powerful and inspirational songs ever. "Music" is the purest and most beautiful form of music of all time, hence the name.. The 2012 performance with the light show is the greatest, period.

I bought this single in 1976 when I was 16 and I can remember saying to my Mother who is no longer with us "Mum music is my first love and it will be my last" and that still holds true to this day. This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
    RIP the great John Miles💖

I was there too. I've seen John Miles live 14 or 15 times. Above the orchestra, there is a whole group of singers. And then the 11,000 people singing along. It's really not normal. So beautiful !! Greetings from Spakenburg, Netherlands.

I keep coming back to watch your reaction of this one of my all time favourite songs. Just a point I forgot to mention earlier. John was a great guitarist and one massive live performance he actually stands up from the piano, puts a guitar on and plays the guitar solo himself then walks back to the piano, sits down and finishes the performance at the piano. What a musician. Thanks again for the great reaction.
    👏👏👏

He was amazing i can remember when he started and remember seeing him in a small cellar club in South Shields, talk about bringing the house down. We were brought up in the same district, we saw him many times. He could play the guitar as well as piano.

Hi, to you two…just saw your video and enjoyed it. Being from the UK I actually saw John Miles with his band in the 1980’s at the “ Royal Court Theatre” in Liverpool UK. It was a fantastic concert and this is the song John Miles is known for. It was a huge hit in the UK in 1976 when it reached No. 3. It also went to no.1 in Holland and no. 10 in Germany, where he is very popular. It was actually produced at Abbey Road studios made famous by the Beatles and produced by none other than Alan Parsons the sound engineer on the Beatles albums…Abbey Road and Let it be. , plus Pink Floyd’s Dark side of the moon. John Miles song..” Music” is to me a masterpiece and combines classical and pop music effortlessly. John actually plays the superb guitar solo on other versions on UA-cam if you look for them, the live version is the best.

Yes, a very old favourite. This performance almost 30 years after the album and remarkably close to the original.
At one point here he doesn't quite hit the note but he was fantastic back in the day.
The album, Rebel, is superb throughout.
But there are several albums - I have them all of course.
You may want to try the other I mentioned, When You Lose Someone So Young.
    Thank you.

great reaction to a great song. I loved it as a hit in the seventies (I think Alan Parsons produced it) and that song deserved a performance at the Night of the Proms. I saw the Night of the Proms eight years earlier, in 1993 in Maastricht, with Colin Blunstone (Zombies), Barry Ryan (the hit song Eloise) and Sting. Great mix of pop music and classical hits (I mean from 16th to 19th century, not pop songs). 'And in this world of troubles, my music pulls me through...'

I can’t believe you both never hear this song. The orchestra is the Belgium Antwerp Philharmonic. The Night of the Proms has many versions and was held in Belgium and Th Netherlands. 2001 also had Meat Loaf, Chris de Burgh ( Lady in red), Martin Fry and many more. More then 1000 shows !! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_of_the_Proms For the record, 2001 version is not my favorite 😉

Must’ve not been as big in the States. I’m not familiar with it either, and I listened to all kinds of styles in the 70s. I looked it up. It only made it to #88 one week on the charts, where it made it to #1 in Holland and #3 in UK.

Musicians of the UK are in Europe big! Sometimes they don't make it over seas, he was a great singer/musician..
You should check but alot of groups/musicians are coming from the UK..
Beatles, Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Queen, Phil Collins, Elton John and so on and on.. 😉

Nick's recommendation is a great one! 'Music' is a 1976 single by John Miles, from his album Rebel, produced by Alan Parsons. I grew up with this song and have always assumed that it was well-known throughout most of the West, but only a couple years ago I found out that this is actually not the case, and that it only charted in a handful of countries. It reached number 1 on the Dutch Singles Chart, number 3 on the UK Singles Chart, and number 10 on the German Singles Chart. It only got to number 88 on the Billboard Hot 100 though. In 1982 the song was rereleased in the Netherlands and reached the number 4 position.
Night of the Proms is a series of concerts held annually in Belgium (since 1985), the Netherlands, Germany and Luxembourg. Regularly there are also shows in France, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Denmark, the United States and Sweden. The concerts consist of pop music and popular classical music (often combined), and various well-known musicians and groups usually participate. It's the biggest annually organized indoor event in Europe.
I'll be sending you a recommendation myself, and I have a feeling it's gonna be one that you might just enjoy quite a bit. Have a great day! 💙🌄

John Miles career started out very promising with this song in the 70s but eventually fizzled out so he transitioned to becoming a sideman. He regularly featured as a vocalist on Alan Parsons Project albums (Parsons also produced Miles’ debut) and you should definetely check out the APP song La Sagrada Familia, which is all about the famous cathedral in Barcelona. Besides this he also became a member of Tina Turner’s live band and as she said “he is my duet partner whenever David Bowie or Brian Adams aren’t around”. And then later became musical director for these classics meets pop concerts in which Music was always part of the set. To me this song has been with me my whole life. It was the first song I ever recorded on tape from radio (as I couldn’t afford records) and when I pass away this is one of the songs they should play at my funeral or memorial service as it sums up what my live has always been about.

Alan Parsons is a whole new rabbit hole. Some great albuns - I have 4 I can think of offhand, I Robot, The Turn of a Friendly Card, Tales of Mystery and Imagination and Eye In The Sky.
John Miles of course had several abuts of which none is missing from my collection:
      Rebel
      Stranger in the City
      Zaragon
      More Miles Per Hour
      Miles High...
      ...and several more.

He was no more in the center of the spotlight, cornered by the punk wave, but got great accomplishments anyway:
      - he toured and played on stage with Led Zeppelin
      - he toured with Jimmy Page as a lead guitarist and even wrote a few songs for him. He made several duets with Jimmy.
      - he has been music director for Joe Cocker for some of his albums. On Night Calls record, he does everything on 3 of the songs: backing vocals, piano, guitar, drums, … he made several duets with Joe.
      - he was music director of Tina Turner in some of her tours and again sang duets with her
      - he has been the orchestra lead for the Night of Proms during decades, biggest tours in Europe mixing pop and classic musics with the greatests showing up as guests. He even made duets with Andrea Bocelli, Anastacia, Sharon den Adel, …
