One of my favorite tracks from the 80s.
Live To Tell by Madonna from the third album True Blue (1986)
Composed by Patrick Leonard
featured the Yamaha DX7 II FD and the Roland JD-800
This cover song series contains my own recreations of my favourite songs from the last 50 years. The original music from which I take inspiration belong to their respective owners. I recreate tracks only for personal passion and to pay homage to these tracks.
My intention is not to create covers that sound exactly like the original (if you want to hear identical sounds, please listen the original). It's more of an inspiration with my sounds from the old synthesizers from the past and of course the great appreciation for the original performers and producers.
Check out the original songs with the original artists here on UA-cam.
Thank you.

The most beautiful music of Patrick Leonard for Madonna
👍🎹
This score is so powerful and so well performed... If only we could turn back the clocks to the 80s... ❤❤❤❤
Agree with you. 💫👍
one of her better songs which isn't played much on the radio any more. I remember when it first came out. I think Madonna has always been more famous for being Madonna than being thought of as a great musical talent, but she flat brought that shit back in the day and a lot of the synth work on those 80s songs was to die for. 🤑
Agree with you. One of her best works for sure. I like the first album too.
Who said a DX7 cannot sound warm. Excellent cover. I always loved the original song, so I do with this cover.
Thank you Jose. 🎹🙌🎹
@@retrosound72 If I recall correct, Madonna keyboardists always carried DX7, both mk1 (in the mid 80's) and IIFD in the "Like a Prayer" era.
@@DX5 yes you are right
In tbe hands of a genius like Pat Leonard the DX-7 could be layered to do amazingly warm tones . Clannad used it to great effect on tbe later seasons of Robin of Sherwood in the same way . Back in the day we’d always layered it up and the TX7 could do super pads using the equivalent of multiple dx7s in one patch . But even by itself and with proper reverb and eq it sounds amazing . So much 80s music was about the production skills not just the gear .
@@culttelevision That was the key: back in mid 80, if you buy a DX7, you instantly get a raw and "cold" (crystal, near metallic) sound due to its sound engine particularities. At the same time, If you were buying a Roland, you would get then instantly softness and warmth (dry Sawtooths on both synths was the best comparison). Totally agree that with a bit of programming and a soft reverb/delay, it becomes warm and powerful.
I say that after being the owner of a Yamaha DX and a Roland D series in 1987.
Nothing beats the DX7 for bells and chimes! Great recreation! 🎉
agreed. The mid 80s sound. Loved and hated.
The soundtrack to the 80’s That song was everywhere
Thank you
Love this era of Madonna's songs where the song was emotional and the arrangement was great
Agree with you 👍
Together with 'Ray of Light', 'True Blue' is my favourite Madonna album. With all the focus on her persona, fashion, and the huge successes she celebrated, it's easy to overlook that she is a very, very good artist. 'True Blue' was largely (co-) written by herself. You don't get where she is today if you don't have a lot of talent, and even more perseverance. It cannot have been easy for a young woman in the 1980s to reach the absolute top.
Agree with you. A living legend.
I love this song. Haunts me and now I gotta try it on my DX7!
Have fun 🎹👍
Great recreation as always! This is the song that made me take Madonna seriously as an artist. Great vocals, a great mood, and fantastic synth arrangements by Patrick Leonard.
Agree with you. One of her best songs for sure. Thank you 🙌
Ah the eighties. A much simpler time. Beautifully recreated my friend 👏
Thank you so much 👍
One of my favourite song of the eighties, maybe the favourite from Madonna ❤
Thanks
A beautiful dx instrumental cover, a cool bass.
We all live to tell
Thank you for your time 🙌✨
Nice to see retro gear kept in such pristine condition. That JD-800 looks beautiful. 😍
Thank you 🎹🙌
You really know these instruments. You absolutely get the most out of them. Excellent.
It goes without saying, you these pieces well too. Thanks for the sounds of better days.
Thank you so much for your kind words Michael 🎹🙌
''at close range vibes''. warm recording. nothing beats old school hardware.
Thank you 🙌
Great cover. Live To Tell is my all time favourite Madonna song, partly also because of the keyboard arrangement. This song has a haunting beauty to it, I’ve always wondered which DX7 sounds exactly where layered in the original mix. When several DX7 sounds come together as a layered sound some magic happens. Michael Mac Donald’s song No Looking Back has that same kind of flavour as well.
Yes agree one of the best Madonna songs for sure. Perfect sound and arrangement. Thank you
@@retrosound72 best Madonna and best Patrick Leonard.
it was back then, when pop songs had structure, used more than 4 triad chords and had key changes.
@@TrueMeHow agreed!
All of that layering of FM sounds was made possible with the TX816, a monstrous rackmount instrument which contained essentially eight DX7s controlled via MIDI with a personal computer. Of course you had eight-part multitimbral capability on the later TX802 but there's still nothing like having eight individual DX synths working together.
Such a powerful jam. That opening beat gives me chills to this day. Thanks for the cover ✌
Thank you so much. :)
Love it, great cover! The DX7 was all over everything in 1986, but really shines in this track.. when I hear it, it makes me want to re-watch the film "At Close Range", an 80's classic that featured this tune on its soundtrack; "Live to Tell" was written specifically for that film and fit the vibe of the story perfectly. Sean Penn at the height of his acting and Madonna at the height of her musical career (and they were married at the time!). For anyone who has never seen the film, you truly owe it to yourself to do so.
Agree with you. Wonderful movie and the soundtrack fits perfectly. Thank you
Great video! One of the best Madonna songs. This producer, Patrick Leonard produced Bryan Ferry's Bete Noire album after this, which is a great example of his approach/sounds too.... I feel like he must have been heavily influenced by Scritti Politti
Yes agree a wonderful song with deep atmosphere. Thank you for watching 🙌
I love this song. I remember back in the day when it was played on the radio they would always cut out the middle section where the drums stop and the song sort of repeats the beginning and then comes back in, I love that part along with how Madonna performed it. I was like, really are people's attention spans that short? Lol
Thank you
One of my favourite Madonna songs beautifully recreated! Excellent 👍
Thanks a lot 🎹🙌
Great! This song is one of the most underrated Madonna songs.
wonderful song. My favortite.
@@retrosound72You can’t deny your passion for this song. 😊How about a cover of Alison Moyet- Love resurrection?
That song brings me memories. I was probably 15 years old, in Caracas Venezuela. Caracas is like no place, imagine a field, like somewhere in Arkansas, but with hills and mountains and the place is actually rich. And this song reminds me driving at night to go to the parties but driving on roads with the haze and moisture of the girls and a bit cold too. On an SUV. Going to some party at some ambassador or some rich people. The houses were gorgeous and everybody so happy and chill. You had the pool in the patio and then the vide to the valley and a massive mountain on the horizon... Is a place to be happy.
Still today, Caracas at night is just magic.
Thank you for your feedback
This song give me so much melancholy I don’t know why. 😮
I can understand that. A lot melancholy.
@@retrosound72 LoL
This song was used in one of the most underrated films of the era: At Close Range. It flows in out and throughout the film, which is lovely and dark and sad.
I believe the ninth chords contribute greatly
Never was a Madonna fan, but this song is gold and gives goose bumps everytime. BTW, my first memory is always the soundtrack and awesome movie with Sean Penn: At Close Range (Auf kurze Distanz) 1986
#mustwatch #musthear
thank you for your feedback.
I don`t like all Madonna songs. But I love Live To Tell and the songs from the first album. Great synthpop.
WoW🤪✌️😎another awesome piece from your retro box...Fantastic 👌🎧✨🤍💫
Thanks a lot 🎹🙌
best song she ever did. great rendition here.
Thank you so much
these startint chords/beats/sounds are absolutely legendary
Yes. A classic 🎹👍
Simply beautiful!
Thanks a lot 🎹🙌
This sounds marvelous. It doesn’t matter if the DX7 MkII and JD-800 are anachronistic to “Live to Tell” (which is my favorite Madonna song).
Thank you so much for your feedback. 🎹🙌
Great version, love the second part of the track. At Close Range is a great movie this was on the soundtrack 😊
Thank you for watching. Great track.🎹🙌
it's cool that people remember this film too, it was really good imo
Отличная работа, мой друг! JD800 & DX7 - любимые инструменты!
Спасибо большое мой друг. Хорошего вечера ✨🙌
Cool recreation. More EQ & reverb on snare and is perfect.
Thank you.

Hej thanks for the video and lovely synthesizers take care and have a lovely week.
Thank you so much 🙌
Hi @retrosound72, I always watch your videos, but I don't always comment. However, you have a lovely UA-cam channel for an old synth guy lover like me take care.
@@NTPTM I really appreciate it. Thank you for your time and your loyalty over the years 🙌

Thank you so much dear friend. Have a great evening ✨🙌
@@retrosound72 🙏🙏🙏Sure! U2!!!🤝👍🙌✨
Super bien fait bravo a toi
Thank you?
Great work. I figured they used a DX7 in that song with the metallic sound of it.
Yes. Thank you for watching 🙌
Well done!! 🎹🎹
Thank you so much 🎹🙌
Herrlicher Synthpop. Da kommt hier noch einiges. ;) Danke für`s reinhören und Schönes Wochenende!
@@retrosound72 ja, das stimmt. Das erste Album ist wirklich gut. Na da bin ich gespannt 😊 Vielen Dank. Das wünsche ich dir auch.
Awesome recorded and played. So very near to the original 🫶🏻🙌🏻
Thanks a lot!
Hoping that Madonna herself, loves it.
Nothing can beat the original song. 💫🙌
@@retrosound72 Yup. Nothing can beat it.
Another fantastic synth that sounds great. I think this synth was used heavily on a lot of Madonna’s albums. Another great cover you done here, but then I think you are one of the best I seen on UA-cam for this stuff and the best for close ups of your equipment. As always thanks for sharing and the time you put into these demos for us. Fantastic channel and top man you are. Just one quick question. Are you using the DX7 as it is or with E or any of the other upgrade boards you could get at the time ?
Thank you again Michael. 🙌 I really appreciate your feedback. Yes Madonna used the DX7 mostly on the True Blue album. I have upgraded my DX with the E! Board many years ago. So I can play 8 layer and I have real-time control. 🎹👍
So beautiful.
A sugestiion .
" Betty Davis Eyes " by Kim Carnes.
Thank you!
Bette Davis Eyes is done but I have so man stuff ready for upload ;)
Great and powerfull rendition, amazing gear you have (DX7 II FD looks beautiful still on 21st century). Thanks for posting.
Thank you so much 🎹👍
Another great interpretation and choice, that build up in middle was always magic. Was the DX7 on bass duties too?
Thank you 🙌
Yes the bass too.
Fantastic job. Agree, the DX7 sounds are pretty great hear (except that bass, not a fan of that one). I might need to come up with a loop jam based on the intro part. Sure, people got fatigued from the DX7 being on so many records but those were great synths.
Thank you for your feedback. Yes the DX was overused in the mid 80s but it's a great synth.
This is amazing brother! Long time no see =) I know this song means a lot to you, saw your comment on the video... lol
Also, if this had of been recorded on the kind of desk queen Madge had in the day, nobody could have told the difference...
Yes, a fantastic song with deep atmosphere. I like it.
Thank you for your comment. 🙌🎹
Geil wie immer🔥Habe gerade den 666en Teufellike gedrückt✨👹👍
Vielen Dank 🔥✌️
👏👏👏❤
Thank you so much Franck! :)
Big Dx led track, totally Patrick Leonard style ! Would you have a patch sheet of the chime you use for the chorus, I would like to reprogram it (I dont think it is one of those shitty presets). I give you Sean Penn's thumbs up 👍. Keep up the good job
Thank you so much 🎹🙌
If I remember right wasn't this written on DX7 and Prophet 5?
I think so
Ik the 80 the yamaha dx and kx compute with the d50 and some korg to the en of the 90.
yes
@@retrosound72 I crashing mi brain searching what made the keyboard player of Peter Gabriel with the kx88 or how Vince Clarke made everything with a d50 .
With the time I can chat with technician that work in that's show and when tell me that Vince Clarke made a show in the 90 with only a master piano and a big secuencer for 30.000 people's I can't believe that
@@ezquimal Vince Clark was a genious in programming sequences and sounds
@@retrosound72 yes and have a big balls to play with that in live performance
That JD 800 looks super clean. Mine looke meh. You know what synth you need to try? A Roland D-70. Is the BEST synth ever! Is very Pet Shop Boys "Its a sin" and "Always on my mind". From the album Behaveiour. It is not a U20 at all, it is not a D50 nor JD800. Is more a very aggressive JD990. Is way beyond any JV series. I got one and sent one to a good friend in Venezuela and he got speechless. You try a D70 and you will never touch ay JV, U or JD800 ever again.
Thank you.
I had a D70. But I like the JD800 way more.
One of my favourite Madonna songs beautifully recreated. Excellent! 👍
Thank you so much.🎹🙌
