French Farmhouse Tour; The Renovation Project

  • A house tour was highly requested so come in and see how we turn this old France Farm into two renovated houses. We are halfway done but that’s only the start of the whole project we are facing. The renovation project is more than just these houses because when they are ready we have a full barn renovation ahead of us. The south of the Dordogne hasn’t treated us with the best weather last weeks but slowly temperatures are rising and it’s sunny more often. This week we finish up the preparations for the tiling of the bathroom and it’s time to go back to the Netherlands again. We are becoming fathers in a couple of months! So we’re going of an ultrasound of our little baby. Hopefully everything will be healthy and on schedule. While we are in the Netherlands the tiles for our bathroom will be delivered because the work continues. The house has to be ready for the baby so there is no time to waste. Our self building project is great but the fact that there is a baby on the way makes everything completely different. We hope you enjoy the house tour. The farm isn’t a proper house yet but we working hard to make it our home.

    I am an 82 year old gay man. My partner/husband of 44 years died 3 years ago. I accidentally found your vlog and have loved it. I have been watching one episode after another. My only suggestion is to number each episode since right now I seem to be bouncing all over the place and I have no idea when the episode was taped. I am very impressed with your knowledge of repairs.

    Thx for the house tour! Before long you really will have a crib….
    Eager to see the new tile & finishes go in. You’ve come such a long way in a short time. Well done!
    I hope it will be habitable before the baby arrives; you may find very little time for renovation afterwards.
    But don’t worry; they say only the first 40 years of parenting are difficult, hahaha.
    Given the depth of the holes & the material you are drilling through, I am not surprised you are wearing out many drill bits, even while using water to cool & lubricate.
    Think of every hole as sacred, mmmmmmkay?
    Glad to see those masks, gloves, soaps, scrubs!
    Happy equinox

      A tour was very necessary I think. In a couple of weeks I hope we can do a new tour of our semi finished house. Thanks for the support!
      We hope to start the renovation of the barns after the baby is born. But indeed it would be lovely when the house at least is ready. Oh only the first 40? haha.
      Thanks so much!

    Enjoyed the house tour. A compact house is less expensive to run and you will probably spend a lot of time outside in spring and summer when you do eventually get some time to relax! Hope all goes well with the scan.

      Agree, its not like american videos where all they talk about is resale. Live within means and live better. Having a large house to impress, especially when average family 2.5. doesn't make cents. Heating, cooling is expensive.

I had twins 30 years ago n another daughter a year later. It was tough to say the least n with no help. Parents always want to take care of the child but don’t be shy to ask for help when necessary. Hey Simon, hey Bram. I've not heard you say that you've gotten or are getting any permits for all this work you're doing. I can't imagine that France just lets the everyone do what they want. Do they? I'd love to see a floor plan. Here in the states you wouldn't even be able to occupy the house wihtout a certificate of occupancy which essentially says you got all your permits and passed all your inspections.

    • @vangaze
      @vangaze  6 місяців тому +1

      We’ve briefly talked about permits earlier. Even before we owned the house we’ve submitted for some permits and we got them just after signing:) so it’s all good! We were very confused about how fast it went and were very happy we got them.

    • @cityguyusa
      @cityguyusa 6 місяців тому

      But no inspections or plan reviews? Very strange to me. I can't even replace my front steps without a permit and a plan detailing exactly what I'm making, the materials involved and how it will be held together, etc. @@vangaze

    Wouldn't it be cheaper and less stressful to train between France and Holland?

    • @vangaze
      @vangaze  6 місяців тому +1

      The journey isn’t stressful at all fortunately. The train connection isn’t bad, it’s terrible. So that’s not an option. The only other option is going by plane but we always bring a lot of stuff back to France. And we want to take the dogs. So we just do it by car/camper :)

    • @cityguyusa
      @cityguyusa 6 місяців тому

      I guess more propaganda here in the states. All we hear about is the wonderful train access through Europe and high speed in comparison to our 40 mph trains that have to cede the tracks to freight trains and you may sit literally for hours on a siding. When I was in Hoversum (sp), Netherlends I seem to recall seeing a lot of people waiting for a train which you wouldn't see in most cities throughout the US there's just no service at all unless you're in a metro area but even when I lived in Philadelphia (5th largest city) there was only regional trains like once per hour and they stopped at 9pm. They're called regional because they essentially come from the suburbs into the city but there's no connection to any of the spokes wihtout going into the city. Very ineffective to go shopping one suburb away. The subway was like 3 lines and really didnt' go anywhere. The only way to travel using public transit was the bus and I guess you can imagine how well that moves people.@@vangaze

    What's your heat source?

    • @vangaze
      @vangaze  6 місяців тому

      Radiators. In previous vlogs Bram has connected them already. The bathrooms will have underfloor heating. And it’s all connected with the pallet burner (also in previous vlogs). Maybe we are going to instal a heat pump later! Thanks!

    • @cityguyusa
      @cityguyusa 6 місяців тому

      Yes I did hear talk about the pellet burner but I didn't realize it was your permanent heat source because here in the states you would not get a temporary heating source approved I dont' think. You have to have some so-called reliable fuel source electric or natural gas or geothermal not requiring someone to drive to get fuel pellets. The other options are fuel oil and propane which get delivered on some schedule. I may be wrong but I've never encounterd such a thing anywhere I've evern been here in the states. You can supplement with fuell pellets and other types of heat.@@vangaze
