Thumri is a common genre of semi-classical Indian music. The term "thumri" is derived from the Hindi verb thumakna, which means "to walk with dancing steps so as to make the ankle-bells tinkle." The form is, thus, connected with dance, dramatic gestures, mild eroticism, evocative love poetry and folk songs of Uttar Pradesh, though there are regional variations.
The Vaishnava Padavali (Bengali: বৈষ্ণব পদাবলী) movement refers to a period in medieval Bengali literature from the 15th to 17th centuries, marked by an efflorescence of Vaishnava poetry often focusing on the Radha-Krishna legend. The term padavali has the literal meaning "gathering of songs". In eastern India, specially in Bengal Vaishnav Padabali is a major part of Literature as well as music and philosophy. These poems were derived from 'Brij bhasha' (language of Brij bhumi, that was the place of Shree Krishna). So bengali padabali Kirtan is a combination of Brajabuli, Sanskrit and Bengali, that is very sweet to sound, and easy to understand. It is all about the story of Radha-Krishna.

Story of the song:
It is an experimental work to combine Thumri and Padabali Kirtan together, for the first time ever. The thumri I have chosen 'Kaun gali gayo Shyam', is a bandish, in raag khambaj, written in Brij bhasha. The Kirtan pada (poem) is written by Govinda Das (1535-1613), in brajabuli. Both songs has a similarity in melodic structure. Apart from that, the story lines of two songs are related to each other coincidently. Though Govinda Das wrote the pada 'Madhupura nagari' long before whereas Thumri got popularity in 19th century.
In the first song, someone is asking 'Kaun gali gayo Shyam'. It means, someone is searching Shree Krishna and asking people, ‘Please tell me, where my Shyam went? I have searched for him everywhere, Mathura, Brindavan and Golakdham. But I didn't find him’. Here it is assumed that Radha is searching Krishna, when he left Golokdham for Mathura. But, here we can also assume that it is not Radha, but her friend 'Brinda' visited Mathura in search of Krishna. She came here to tell Krishna that Radha is willing to die in absence of him (due to Birha), that story we can find in 'Mathur' chapter of Vaishnav Padabali. The answer of the question, hidden in the first song, I have found in this pada of Govinda Das 'Madhupura nagari'. In this Kirtan, Radha's friend Vrinda visited the glorious city of Mathura. She knew that Krishna killed Kansa, and became the king of that city. So she asked to the citizens of Mathura (Madhupura nagari), ‘Can anybody tell me, which way my Krishna went’? People of Mathura ( Madhupura) questioned her, ‘Who is Krishna'? Vrinda replied, ’Don’t you know Krishna! He is only our king’! People were not familiar with this name of there king 'Ramanuja'. They didn't believe Vrinda. They saw, Vrinda was a common milkmaid, and after long journey her dresses were dirty. So they laughed at her, and told, ‘You are crazy that wishing to meet king! The king sits behind 7 doors. It's very difficult to reach him’. Then Vrinda told them, ‘I will never enter the palace. I will only sing the name of Radha from outside, and you people will see how king will come to me after listening Radhika's name’. Then Vrinda started singing with name of 'Radha'. She was right. Shree Krishna identified 'Radha's name and came out of palace. He thought, 'Radhanath'(lord of Radha) was his earlier name, when he stayed in Gokul. But he couldn't remember everything immediately. As he saw Vrinda in dirty clothes he didn't identify her, and ask, 'Who are you, poor beggar'? He called her a beggar! Vrinda was so shocked, she couldn't reply anything more. Here at the ending of this song, Govinda Das is narrating, that now, Krishna is performing his duty as king, he is no more a child to play with flute and milkmaids of Gokul. So he has forgotten everything about Gokul. This way a story has been created with two songs of two different genre and different time period, with the same idea. Here the Traditional way of 'story telling part' (kathakata/কথকতা) with begali Kirtan has been introduced in a modern simplified way. It is not only a song or story, but responsibility of karma of life.
