    Wow, that certainly meets the definition of a "face plant". I really expected it to work after the front panel replacement. It must have failed first and then was damaged in storage/shipment. This should be another excellent series of power supply repair videos! Thank you, David.

      The PSU was packed really well. The unit reflected the photos of the unit prior to shipping. There is a sticker on the enclosure "powers on, cannot control output".....LOL!

    Great video as always. I highly recommend you check the opto couplers on the main regulator board as well. Mine had two of them dead plus the opamp that you just replaced (OPA27) and also one or two of the resistors around the ADC were also open. So it seems those components are dodgy in this series

    I was surprised the display survived the front panel damage.

    This is definately more involved that a loose wire or blown fuse.

    On The 3647 there was also a supervisor IC which messed with the 5V rail causing it to not sense the voltage, not sure if that is the same architecture.

    Great, you really seem to get the interesting ones lately!

    The HCNR200 opto couplers are a suspect from me, I had issues with those on a 3647A

    • @IanScottJohnston

      The analogue signals are reaching the multiplexer IC just fine. The ADC isn't working, the integrator is doing nothing.
      Funnily enough, my own home made PSU from years back used the same analogue opto-couplers I think (terrible things, their tempco is BAD), so I have loads of them.

    Been buying from Puerto Rico then, I hear they have some equipment "removed from a working installation" for sale, only one owner, might have been dropped once.

    Big caps in parrallel of outputs? Is it normal for lab PSU? What about fast current limiting?

    Whomever "dropped that one from a great height" should be "dropped from a great height" for damaging that PSU. Looks like you got on with it though :)

    My friend , never ever go into CAL mode unless all circuitry is functional 100% and you need for CALibration to get accuracy , otherwise , keep away from any CAL modes on any TMI ... Also , from my long experience , I rarely got faulty OP-AMPs so please recheck those faulty parts you have thrown away , might be working !!...

    • @IanScottJohnston
      @IanScottJohnston  3 роки тому +2

      I respectfully disagree, page 66 of the service manual states that you can terminate any cal setup without changing its calibration constants by turning off power.....which is what I did. My observation in there was to attempt to see if there was any corruption and no more.
      Since 1984 when I first got attached to the EE workbench I have had plenty of faulty op-amps.....:-)
