Those HIMARS have a lot of balls
Yeah, as many as 90,000 men, to be precise 🤣
@@christophneuschaeffer7489 I think we'll stick to the HIMARS if it's all the same to you. Not sure we can fire 90,000 men at a Tor system even if we wanted too.
🤣🤣🤣
Small ones....but effective...😂

The SAM didn't hit the drone because it wasn't an airliner or a Russian aircraft.

Fun Fact -- you'll hear Russian fanboys brag about "we can detect American stealth aircraft". Sigh. That doesn't mean they can target those low-observable platforms. So being able to detect it means that they have time to kiss their backside good-bye. Just like this case.
But there aren't any in the conflict anyway, at least none on 'our' side. F-16s are no stealthier than a MiG 29, possibly less. Cheers.
Russia couldn't find it's backside with both hands, let alone a US stealth aircraft.
Russian stuff couldn't even detect french rafales in syria few years ago. They entered syrian airspace with impunity and left unpunished, and they are not even "stealthy".

@@UncleJoeLITE that may be but the Russians nevertheless brag about it. See, the Russian companies in the defense industry are state owned. So they channel with their TV propaganda the narrative of their allegedly superior weapons, claiming to their buyers that Russian weapons can even defeat western air forces (which they cannot)
The drone held up a red cape to the side and the missile took the bait. 🐂
How do you say "¡Ole!" in Ukrainian?
It was probably a yellow painted door, though.

I like that
If only the drone were hospital-size... it would've been hit 10/10 times.
More… if a kids’ hospital.
even if it were the size of a plane or Helo it would have likely been a hit. either due to it just being a larger target to home in on, or the larger mass causing a proximity fuse to detonate instead of wiz right past it.
@@mtnbound2764jokes aren’t your forte I take it?
I don't think Russian arms sales will ever recover. They have failed spectacularly at almost every opportunity.
No, they're sunk and don't look to be coming back anytime soon
You are right. It is all useless junk
Right now they don't have arms to sell anyway. They even need ammunition from North Korea, drones from Iran and mercenaries from Africa and Asia. The mighty Russian Army has disgraced itself for 870 days in a row since the start of their war against Ukraine. An operation, they thought would be over in 3 days.
Well, they will always be able to sell to nations that can't buy from Western sources due to sanctions and embargos. But China and possibly also India are gradually taking over in that trade.
The Russian arms industry has no capacity for exports, as all production goes to the war. Not that other countries would now buy anything! That is another source of income lost.
Drone: "Do it, you won't" 😛
Tor: "Imma do it" 😠
Himars: "There you are.. " 😁🚀
I instinctively heard Himars in the Portal turret voice.
Himars; "Hold my balls"
I remember in the Army we had a "live fire day" with stingers but we where out of the standard targets so larger radio controlled "model plane" was used.
But those things just did not have the size and signature for even a small nimble stinger to hit.
It lock on fine but fly past really close. It was counted as a "hit" but those things was simply too small.
Looks like it is the same here, the radar can just target the drone but it clearly is too small for the missile to hit or trigger proximity sensor.

I’m not sure what’s more comical - the pathetic performance of Ivan’s air “defenses” or the potential situation of the air defense crews abandoning their equipment at the sight of a spotter drone because they know what’s coming.
Let's just stand back and appreciate just how cool that looked with the smoke trail and shadow 😎
More likely it gave me a killer laugh! 🤭

Russian soldiers looking to speed up the end of the war might be inclined to hide it in the open.
Sabotage is a matter of all wars. It wouldn't be unreasonable to think the Orcs may have taken it to a new level.
Sure it happens. But not in this case. The crew stuck around long enough to fire a couple of missiles.
It is a radar sight. It needs a clear line of sight to function. They can't be camouflaged. They are just supposed to intercept the missiles coming towards it. In fact, the patriot systems likes it when you target it.

@@mtnbound2764 He said crew abandoned . . . But maybe not all.
Here's a quick note for you all. Forbes are saying that Russian loses of the T72 and the T-90 are so high that the T-62 is now Russia's main battle tank. I somehow don't think the US will follow suit and be replacing the M1 with the M60.

Ahh, the trademark classic of a tor system missing a spotter drone. Thanks for your constant efforts, Mr. Suchomimus!
That is an awesome view of the SAM launch & track!
If it was abandoned, it's a pity about the crew.
ruzzia one time claimed they could not intercept US tomahawks in Syria because of Earth's curvature, I think this is the same excuse they will make.
Darn physics that everyone else has figured out, isn't easy for the Orcs.
Propaganda. The Earth is flat. You can see that in an atlas. Russian atlas best in the World. Nowhere in Russian atlas is there a place called Ukraine.
And believe it or not, it was true. The earths curvature did prevent the radar from seeing the tomahawks in time.

Russia goes low (by hitting a children's hospital with a cruise missile) and Ukraine goes Hi(Mars).
I wonder what price a proximity fuse gets on the black market.
A drone is probably too small to trigger it anyway. It's likely made for much heavier objects with more metal in them.
Where do you think the battery colonel is selling them.
The figure is only approximate.
They were aiming for the bird flying near the drone because the crew was hungry and needed something to eat. We all know putin doesn't feed his troops.

The first counter fire still threw up ground dust around and a bit beyond the TOR so it would have taken some BBs from it, but the second definitely shredded it. I am surprised there was no cook off. Either luck or that was its last missile.
I suspect the first HIMARS missile warhead (182K tungsten pellets) took out the Tor SAM's EW capacity, which enabled the second HIMARS missile to score that bull's-eye.
The drone was probably too small to activate the missile proximity fuse.
Thanks. Scary footage. Miles away and only seconds to respond.
SAM failed to say HI when his MAR came to call.
Serious pucker moment for the drone operator. 😂

We can't discount Russian incompetance. Maybe they moved the Tor system a bit and then assumed they were no longer observed.
Also very telling is the use of 2 HIMARS rounds, indicating the high priority given to targeting SAM systems. Ukraine obviously has a good supply of Tungsten rounds.
As someone else in the comments has said, this is a drone led SEAD operation (suppression of enemy air defences).
Given all the stories in Western media saying that a lot of Western equipment is not working. Due to electronic warfare stopping it working correctly. That could be true, but a whole lot of western equipment is still going past ruzzians defences
They want to take them out before the F-16s turn up in theater.
@@abrahamdozer6273 It certainly seems like UAF is prioritizing Russian anti-air assets.
It's also interesting because Russian doctrine prioritizes a high adoption of GBAD to compensate for their inability to compete equally with NATO airpower. So the high level of attrition of Russian AD systems that Ukraine has inflicted, mostly using only fairly limited western donations, is really quite something.
The system failed to hit the drone, but it did find Waldo.

@@michaelccozens depends on the circumstances, if you’re trying to engage some thing that the TOR was designed to engage… you’ve got a very good chance of hitting it, but trying to shoot down something half the size of the guidance lockout….. meaning trying to engage something smaller than the system was built to track….. You might as well just run away now because the missiles are intentionally designed not to track targets that small to avoid bird strikes.
Thank you good sir.
I think this was not a failure of the SAM system, but an excellent work of the drone operator.
If the operator sees an incoming missile, he can wait for the right moment when the missile is close enough and then make a full throttle sideway evasive maneuver. Thus skilful drone operators are able to dodge rockets, and I think this is the case.
@@Rivas21 I'm not sure this is what happened. That missile was moving pretty fast and it appeared to be going in a dead straight line, straight past the drone. I don't think the drone operator had time to react.
@@herseem You can see the tilt of the drone moments before the rocket flyby, which is indicative of the drone moving sideways in the moment. It was done by the drone operator. You can not see the side movement directly on the background bcoz the drone is pretty high and the ground cant be indicative, but indicative is the drone tilt. I think the operator was doing the evasive maneuver.
@@Rivas21 Just air movement buffeting the drone as it goes past.
This is not WW2. Missiles explode a distance before the target to disperse a cone of shrapnel.
@@EditioCastigata may be you dont know all the rusian rockets they use..
It appears that the Tor fired TWO missiles at the spotter. The smoke trails around 0:17 look different.
That's what i'm thinking too! Which makes it even worse from the russian standpoint! 😂😂😂✌
Think you may have mis-typed there. 0:17 is the HIMARS strike, so I'm not sure what you're referring to in terms of a Tor-missile smoke-trail.
If you were referring to the two distinct sections of the Tor-missile trail in the footage a few seconds earlier, I think you're right about the difference in appearance, but I think (NB: I'm not an expert) that's down to how the single missile fired is designed, ie with a "pop-up" charge to get it clear of the launcher, then a stabilization and orientation burst to get it facing the right direction, at which point the main booster is free to accelerate the missile towards the target without melting the thing launching it in the process. Similar to ship- or sub-borne missiles.
@@michaelccozens I went through it frame by frame. A black missile whizzes past at 0:12, another black missile at 0:15. Perhaps it is the same missile footage spliced in again, though the white smoke tracks look different.
Tks

I think TOR missile warhead proximity fuses are tuned for civilian airliners.
I thought the drones were largely plastic, how does a TOR see it?
Plastic won't make it invisible. Rotating blade will probably make it more detectable.
i guess this is quiet a big drone, which would have a heat signature too.
That drone sure knows some manuevers.

A reference to Shegar , nice
I mean we’ve seen Russia’s SAM systems do their jobs well enough against commercial airliners
It didn't hit the drone, because it's not a children's hospital
I'm sure it has occured to Poots that his best weapon options are 'Made in China'. And even they will only do some back-door deals to send ammunition.
Actually pretty rad footage
I suppose spotter drones are too little for TOR missile's proximity sensors. It technically not "missing", TOR's rockets overpass close enough but just don't explode when needed. Probably just because TOR was developed based on technical specifications formulated based on wars of previous eras when there were no such small drones
Finding Sherger is more likely, for 'state of the art" defence systems. A man with a shield would be better!
Hm , with that many wreks in the terrain it could be possible to hide in the open dressed as a wreck
Drones have a minimal IR and RCS, so they are hard to both see and hit.
you notice the cooling towers? there is a smoke stack, it's a coal plant most likely
Running out of fuel is real possibility. Those things don't really have high mpg, and Ukraine has disrupted Russian fuel infra a lot. Leaving the vehicle for safety is also a possibility if they were smart. Get out of vehicle, wait at safe distance for either spotter drone to leave or vehicle to get destroyed.
Finding Shergar 😄
Vith such a short range - it is likely guarding something valuable close by - something that is now easier to attack with drones

To be fair, the SAM proximity fuses will have been set to only detonate for stronger radar reflections than you will get off a small drone. That would explain their failure in this case.
Those balls are molten and go thru everything.
Small drones are a big issue for legacy SAM system’s. Just too small to trigger the systems warhead activation. You can be sure engineers are already on the case, but right now, drones have an advantage. Don’t think it will be long before anti-drone SAM systems are being deployed.
I hope however is in charge in the US right now takes control of the situation soon and I ends this conflict once and for all. If the West were serious we would have had the conclusion 2 years ago.
