I’m a Virginian so I thought it was soooo cool when Luke was in the Richmond Virginia train station! This was the first Stephen king book I read and now I can’t stop reading Stephen king
My first also but I thought it was more wordy than it needed to be. Also what I know about writing, which is supposed to "show not tell," there is a lot of telling. Esp at the end. Glad I read it, not sure if it wasn't Stephen King, it would have been published as is. Trump would have been removed for sure. 😁
I don’t think Stephen King thinks about what genres are dead or not. I think Stephen King comes to his publisher with a book and they say yes. “Mr. King... YA Dystopia is dead.” “See, but I’m writing it though.” “Excellent, Mr. King.”

I was waiting for this! I loved the institute as well. It had a weird surreal quality to it, much like the Long Walk, and was 'much' better than the outsider
Agreed -- so much better than The Outsider! I had fairly low expectations going into The Institute based on the past few King releases and was pleased to be surprised :)
@@EmilyCait Can't wait to start reading it. I've heard it was like King's older stuff. Kids on the road like in The Talisman and The Long Walk. Is it like those?
Your definitely right about, Stephen king, that’s he does well with the kids dynamic in his book, like, IT, and The Body. He make you feel for the kids and care about them ( which we always care about kids well being, compared to caring about adults in books and movies as suppose to the child), but I liked, George, he reminded of, Richie (character from IT book) a little for some reason.
Children are always our most precious resource 💝 Telekinesis is a theme in a good many of SK's work. All humans have psychic abilities of varying types and skill level. Open your third eye 👀

Avery was such a sweat boy and a true hero. RIP. Honestly, I loved all of them. The book isn't perfect by any means, but I was invested in the story from start to finish. Great video btw. You earned my sub.
i just finished this book because last week was translated in my country but oh boy I liked it so much. I read IT last year and it gives me the same feeling as this one. I loved how he jumps forward between characters and I loved Avester character development.
I totally agree. The younger you are the scarier this book. I still get the chills whenever I reread 'Apt Pupil' so Im spoiled. SK's writing style is brilliant but I think he needed to delve deeper into the ugly pathologies of the people who ran the Institute.
I read this book a few months ago now and I have to say it was a very gripping and heart-wrenching novel to read. In being a topic of socially unacceptable behaviour it is at times very tearful and incredibly horrifying. I have, in fact, experienced multiple nightmares as a result of reading this book - but that just goes to show how good this book is and well it is written.
I feel like you can go in several directions depending on what you liked about The Shining. Specifically the Torrence family? Check out the sequel Doctor Sleep that picks up with Danny as an adult. The creepy atmosphere created by being alone in a hotel? The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. The supernatural aspects? Salem's Lot is a fun one. Hopefully this helps :)

I just finished The Institute, and feel that it was wrapped up pretty good in terms of everything having been explained. Just one thing doesn't add up though, the booze and cigarettes in the vending machines. As an adult I understand how they can be used as vices for coping with a bad situation, but why give them to children? Did it help to push some kids over the line and just accept the situation? Or is there some other reason that went right over my head?
The book explains it. The kids get hooked on booze and cigarettes therefore they really really have to behave themselves to get the coins. Makes sense.
Fantastic review! I like your channel! I agree with “It” and it’s my favorite SK books. The Movies didn’t really captured the essence of that tight group of kids like the Novel did. I have been wondering if IT had attacked me as a kid- what form would it have taken...I’ll check out The Institute!
I think he should have written it as a sort of sequel to Firestarter with The Institute being the successor to The Shop, maybe have Charlie McGee instead of Annie. Also have the kids being injected with an improved version of Lot 6.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Because it was a super good book and the story was just incredible. Haven't you watched Stranger Things? Because surely The Institute it's a little bit similar to it and Stranger Things it's so similar to King's books!
Had to stop at 16:07 because I don't want the spoilers. The Institute is great so far. Listening to the audio book while I drive between jobs and commute to and from work. Luke's still in front half for me
@@EmilyCait I'll check those out. Is there a possibility that King's novel will revitalize the dystopian genre? Not that it's dystopian in a literal sense.
I just finished this book like less then 30 minutes ago and I am 13 so I really connected with these characters and loved it. If your around my age and reading this comment I highly recommend this book. I read Firestarter then The Institute back to back (didn't mean to do it that way, just a coincidence). Hey Emily thank you for the great review. This book is my first endeavor into the world of SK and I gotta say I’m totally hooked. I have Carrie, Pet Sematary, Salem’s Lot, and The Shining being delivered to my house right now! Which book do you suggest I read first?
That's awesome! You may as well start at the very beginning with Carrie. I think it's a great representation of the themes King continues to explore throughout his career. And if you just read The Institute it might be fun to see where King started with his kids with powers thing. Happy reading :)
I’ve been hanging out to watch this video but thought I should wait until I finish the book. So here I am, and I have some thoughts. And SPOILERS for anyone else reading!! 1. Luke’s escape and freedom was so intense and so well written. And all the ‘complacency’ within the Institute was so real for me. I see this kind of thing daily at my own workplace and to have this as an integral part of the story was mind blowing. 2. Maureen is a bad guy. She’s not Luke’s friend. She’s complicit in the abduction and murder of kids, she could have gone to the authorities and actually actively stopped everything years ago. She didn’t - she’s the bad guy. 3. Tim and Luke just let them (Stackhouse and the lisping man) get away with everything? What?? 4. Loved the Avester and the demise of the Institute was unexpected and cool. 5 The Institute has been murdering kids for the last 70 years. That’s horrific. I would have liked more history of the institute, but through the perspective of other kids that were there throughout the it’s existence. Maybe If Luke had found a secret diary or something - something like the interludes in IT. Sorry for the long post. Loved the book. Loved the video. Next on my list is The Book Thief.
You did a good job making this video Emily and you explained it really good I might just have to end up picking this book up sounds very interesting and as for his other newer releases That he released like the outsider and sleeping beauties they don’t sound very interesting but I been told they were ok but not his best but buy looking at this video and you explaining this new book sounds Like it’s a very good book he’s written 📚 and better than the other ones he released
The Institute for me feelt like a signature book of SK, if I would read it without knowing who the author was, I would guess him from the first pages :D
@@EmilyCait thank you! I would've loved to join the Readrum book club but with University I'm too busy right now! I hope the club will have fun reading King in order and analyzing his works :)
Man, I'm completely with you on how his newer stuff is lacking. Give me The Stand, Tommy-knockers (I liked it) and It over Bag of Bones, Duma Key, From a Buick (zzzzzzzzzz) any day. But The Institute could be my favorite book yet.
J Bro what I mean by “modern” King is his books within the past five-ish books. His more recent books are great, like The Outsider (minus the ending) was very similar to classic King, ie Salem’s Lot or It. The Institute was like a cross Carrie/ The Dead Zone meets It.
@@Aust51989 Thanks! Can't wait to start it. I just ordered it from Amazon. I've also heard someone say that it's a little like The Long Walk which I loved!! Peace.
He didn’t shoot the kid, he shot in the air and a lighting fixture came down on a civilian who otherwise was suppose to be evacuating. LOVED THE REVIEW 100%
First video I've seen by you. I just finished The Institute. I'm having a hard time continuing to watch the video after hearing you reference that Tim had "shot the kid in the mall who was waving the gun". He didn't shoot the kid. He discharged his firearm toward the ceiling of the mall to quell the squabble between the children and a lighting fixture was knocked loose by the round, striking an adult bystander. Sorry to nitpick, but accuracy is important - especially when I look for feedback on a book that I enjoy. Bias probably (definitely) played a role in this comment, so I hope it doesn't harm your credibility. I do feel that you only read for the sake of making referential videos and not for love of the author. This is just my personal opinion and don't claim any opinion (even if it is my own) to be factual. It is good to see a creator that doesn't try to use 'playful' animations or cutaways to reference a non-illustrated book. I appreciate the quality of the video and the clear annunciation you use. Again, just opinions, I hope you do well and I'll look into that book club. Keep up the good work.
But...who are you to say that Sleeping beauties and The outsider are a mess or poorly executed????? Omaigoshh please if you get lost reading a book turn to audiobooks maybe you'll follow the story better.
i think this may be the worst book king has written im amazed at how underdeveloped and shotty this book is either he has plans for more books to develop or this was a "superhuman subganre" cash grab
The Institute was sub-par, only because I know SK can do much better. The treatment of the kids should've been MUCH worse. A few slaps and a few shots is hardly abuse. The 40+ pages of Tim in the beginning was entirely misplaced. It was like Steve didn't know where to put it, so he just stuck it at the beginning. The escape was laughable. If the Institute is as important as they say it is, it would be ran a whole lot tighter than it was, with state-of-the-art security.

Thank you for watching Lil Zae! I think The Institute is definitely worth picking up compared to some of King's more recent releases.
The Institute for me feelt like a signature book of SK, if I would read it without knowing who the author was, I would guess him from the first pages :D
Great review, I can't wait to read The Institute!! IT was my first Stephen King book and still my favorite today 😍
Thanks for watching, Madeleine! I hope you enjoy The Institute! :)
But The Institute could be my favorite book yet.
tnx for subtitle
Luke Ellis just shines a lot
This book was one of Modern King’s best!
100% agree!
What do you mean "modern" King? So I'm assuming this isn't anything like The Talisman, It, or The Body?
Hi Emily! Funny thing about the “monster as the reflection of society” I have an story idea that is a sequel to Frankenstein and the LBGT community.
Sounds interesting :)
It was a little bit of a rethread of fire starter.
the way that i actually almost cried when avery died & how i actually had a small crush on nicky 🤭
Need a copy of this!
Great Review
How is this dystopian?
Great review!! :)
Keep up the good work.
is it only me that thinks Avery is still alive? read the end.
❤️
I'm still waiting for the final chapter of the Talisman/Jack Sawyer trilogy. C'mon Stephen and Peter, let's finish this.
I've heard that there was a lot of Trump bashing in The Institute. Can't wait to read it!!!!
I hope you enjoy The Institute when you do pick it up! :)
your eyes, omg so hypnotizingly beautiful 😍
Thanks :)
lots of ties to mkultra program and other programs that focused on turning children into soldiers...curious
you are so beautiful! i cant concentrate on what you are saying
I was rooting for the Institute in the end! I couldn't stand Avery and all the kids. Thought it was a waste of their powers
“I’m angry at this book because i wish it hurt the children more.”
It takes all sorts... :P
Wtf is wrong with you? You can look around and see that type of abuse you freak...
@JJ Harry Thank you, JJ.
@@endofanage223 It's fiction. Get over yourself.
Too much drivel, Emily. Stick to the book themes, please.
The Firestarter novel dealt with telekinesis as well.
