  • Welcome back to Lodge Life!
This week I am starting some deep cleaning in the kitchen and slowly bring things out of storage and the guys are starting work on replacing some of the boat lift.
There is so much to be done and we are happy to do it because we are living in one of the most beautiful places in Canada. Rivers Inlet, BC.
The weather is still cold and rainy but we've been lucky to get a few sunny days.
If you enjoy this video please subscribe to stay updated with new videos coming out regularly this summer.
Thanks for watching and take care until next time!

I live on the north end of Haida Gwaii, lot of lodges around here and some of my friends and neighbours work at them. I spent my life working at other kinds of camps around the coast, resource extraction, you know what I mean.
One very cold winter at a camp on Douglas Channel we were invaded by martens. The camp was on a barge with the floor raised up from the barge deck to provide room for the furnaces and heat ducting to the rooms. The martens found their way into the crawl space and then into the ducting when the furnaces were off. They liked those heat ducts until the furnace and blowers came on then they'd scamper down the ducts away from the furnace and pop up into individual rooms. Sitting on your bunk reading and a marten or two would jump out of the heat register and start runnning around the room. It was hilarious, for a while, then just annoying. We had half a dozen live traps flown in and in two days trapped fifteen of them and dropped them off across the bay. They didn't come back

Just found your channel. Looking forward to more videos. FYI... the little statue you found looking for bottles in the bank is a "Red Rose Tea Figurine". Red Rose tea used to include a collectable figurine in each big box of tea. As a kid, I collected many of them. And that troublemaking (but cute!) marten has a serious sweet tooth! The same one can be live trapped over and over again with pastries (proven in a Glacier National Park study). I know that is not your goal... prefer once and done! But a little bit of info for future reference. Thanks again for posting the videos and sharing your unique lifestyle with all of us.

Thank you so much for sharing this information. I’ll definitely put a pastry in the trap next time. But yes, we don’t want the same one coming back over and over again. That little figuring that comes in the Tea box is so cute. Apparently there’s a pine Marten figuring which I would love to find. Thanks again and take care.

This vid popped up in my recommended about a couple of weeks ago. Instantly hooked on your channel - so good! As I watched more of your Good Hope vids, the hook was set deeper and deeper!
Edmontonian here since the early 80's (recognized the Allard name right away!), though have lived many years in the BC interior & the Island - and miss it much. You're living & working in the areas of BC I haven't been to - yet wish I had.
Have to admit I spent a fair bit of time Googling much more about the lodge, the Inlet, Ted, and the hatcheries. And the story of Good Hope Cannery & Tony's involvement with salmon conservation & hatcheries is just incredible. Jenny, you're doing a fantastic job of showing off this epic former Cannery now private lodge - the Inlet, and the beautiful BC coast. You have such a massive and beautiful palate to draw from to create stories of lodge life and the surrounding environs. Huge kudos! Now looking forward to every new vid. You might even want to consider starting a Patreon account - or even a Buy Me a Coffee. Trevor

I am also a former Edmontonian. I went to culinary school at NAIT and have always loved BC. My friends and partner have brought me to so many amazing places that I wouldn’t have seen on my own so I’m very grateful to them.
I hope you get the chance to see more of BC but if not then I’ll just keep sharing my adventures with you!!
It makes me so happy to hear you are enjoying my videos, honestly it makes me feel so good. Life and the people up here is pretty unreal so I needed to start sharing it with people.

My step grandfather who is Songhees fished around Rivers Inlet during WW 2. His boat was Swan Point, a vessel ceased by the Canadian Gov’t from a Japanese Canadian family and then given to my grandfather for the war effort. I sometimes think of that family and their loses. There were loses for my grandfather too as he went to Residential School. None the less he must have had a remarkable time in Rivers Inlet visiting all the canaries along the way. Thank you for your videos. I look forward for more. Some day I hope to visit Rivers Inlet. Cheers Michael

PS, you could never harm such a cute and beautiful animal, here in Ontario, some take them as Pets but you must receive them young as kits....at our Lodge, they come around and beg for scraps just like the Chipmunks...last year I seen a Chipmunk catch, kill, and cut a garter snake in two and eat it...never knew chipmunks were omnivores...Pine Marten''s are deep in Native Lore, it was their home before the Lodge, take him across to the island, if he comes back, take him to an island further away...just look at those cute little eyes..,you will do the right thing...they are powerful animals...once I was dragging a deer out of the bush with my Dad and we had a tug of war with this Pine Marten who was convinced he was bringing the deer home for dinner...powerful little bugger, nervy and cute as hell...be kind and release away from the Lodge and I doubt you will see him again...Namaste

On the Martin: Before releasing it, find out how it got into the building and close up the entry point! Find an island nearby to release it. And keep looking for other varmints, there might be others. I just subscribed to your channel yesterday and you responded to my comment by mentioning this post of yours. It's got a great vibe. Thanks Jenny, another great one!
Cant avoid the west coast mold spores and other airborne contaminants on unoccupied building(s). It's not cold enough to stop the growth and just warm enough to keep them present. Thankfully once you open up and air starts moving through the Lodge Im sure you've noticed it diminishes pretty quick. We used to have a cabin on the Island and went through the exact same thing when opening it every year.
Im sorry but the little varmint would have been put down in my world. Dropped the trap straight into the drink and bloop bloop bloop. Having a way to get him to an island is a decent choice though. Even if you had taken him a long ways away he would find his way back. Those are nasty and vicious little creatures.
Is the boat lift to store the fleet there in the winter instead of taking the boats to Vancouver? Would be a great idea if it is.
Thanks again for the videos. I enjoy them so much. Cheers...

    • @jenny_adrift
      @jenny_adrift  4 місяці тому +1

Thank you for your comment!! My sinuses are much better now! Where abouts was your cabin?
We’ve caught another Martin but this time I don’t think it will be as lucky as the last. They are very vicious but they’ve been able to control the mouse population in a big way. But I understand why people don’t want them around also.
The boat lift is getting redone because some of the wood was getting soft. We only store 2 boats in the cannery over the winter, the other 8 are taken both to Bella Bella and down to Vancouver so the owner can use them while he’s there.
Thanks again for the comment!! Take care

I just discovered your videos and they are great!! In Pat Ardley's book Grizzlies, Gales and Giant Salmon they mention frequently the Cannery and John Salo. The Cannery looks like a great Resort and set up first class. Is the Rivers Inlet Fishing Lodge that Pat and George have still running and how is the fishing from the Cannery? They also mention a submerged jail that people dive to look at. Those Grumman Goose's are a real character plane...they would be great to have a flight in one. Take care and I look forward to viewing more of your videos!!

Thank you so much! I should find this book to add to our collection here at the cannery. I’m not sure about Rivers Inlet Lodge. I do know there was a River Inlet Resort that has been disassembled and no longer exists.
The fishing up here is great, weather we head to in head of the inlet or near the mouth.
I’m very curious about the submerged jail as Tony and his sons do take some diving trips in the area.

It won't be able to find it's way back. Maybe put some kind of band around it's ankle so if you see a martin again, you'll know if it's the same one. Cool?

Great video! I appreciate you being real.. not everything in life is cupcakes and coffee like most YT videos; mold, varmints and sinus are real life.. btw, a couple drops of Oil of Oregano under your tounge couple times a day will do wonders for sinus infection/congestion. Mold has given me a sinus infection so its possible.

Thank you for your comment! I appreciate the advice with the oregano oil. I remember the first time I had it, I was not expecting it to be so… spicy! Haha
I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos!! Thanks again!

i bit of caution releasing critters on islands! For example, bird nesting can be destroyed by introductions to Islands.

Thank you for that bit of info. I never thought about the birds. We will have to rethink the island living. Take care and thanks for watching!

Buy yourself a saline nasal sinus irrigator it will help bigtime. as it will rinse the mold dust etc that's bugging your sinuses
