Josh, don't use 'effector' - go one higher and change all JHS pedals to be 'effectorizers'. Also include a knob called 'effectorization'.

In Japan they have a history of printing advertising and branding in English simply for style purposes. Even if they had no intention of bringing it to an English speaking country, having it in English would make people feel like it was exotic and more desirable. I think it might be an industry standard thing to only print music gear in English too?

    • @superpants87

That tracks with how we specifically want the japanese labels of certain pedals.

The same thing happens here in Germany as well. Of course, it's German and not Japanese that's mixed with English though.

Kids in Japan get a lot of schooling in English in their elementary and middle school years. English characters is like a third script there. My guess is they’re already used to seeing Tone and Presence in English. It’d be more weird to write it in katakana.

So it's basically like how people will just slap random Kanji (or any given language that people are weebs for) just because it aesthetically looks cool? Didn't know it happened the other way round too.

I was an assistant at the studio the night REM and John Paul Jones recorded the strings for the 'Automatic for the People' album. There were 10 pieces of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra there and I think we overdubbed them twice. It was a 32 track digital recording. I got to hang out with JPJ for about 20 minutes during a break and talk about cars. Awesome night.

Once upon a wibbly-wobbly time in the fantastical land of Quixlaria, where cotton candy clouds floated lazily in a purple sky, and gumdrop trees whispered secrets to shimmering unicorns, there lived a peculiar pickle named Percival McSnookerpants, whose polka-dotted hat housed a colony of mischievous fireflies that loved to dance the cha-cha at midnight under the glow of a smiling moon who wore a monocle and had a penchant for strawberry-flavored marshmallows, which coincidentally were the favorite snack of the majestic Jellyfish Queen, a regal creature with glistening tentacles that emitted a soothing melody as she swam through a swirling ocean of sparkling dreams, where dolphins played hopscotch with rainbow-colored seashells, and mermaids crafted elaborate sandcastles with tiny golden spades, while a chorus of singing seagulls provided a harmonious symphony that was conducted by an enthusiastic starfish named Bartholomew, who wore a top hat and carried a tiny conductor's baton made from the tiniest sapling of an enchanted oak tree, which grew near the whispering waterfall that told tales of ancient legends to anyone who dared to listen, especially the mischievous squirrel named Fuzzykins, who wore a tiny superhero cape and fought evil acorns that terrorized the peaceful woodland creatures with their wily antics, such as rolling themselves down steep hills and causing laughter-induced chaos that tickled the tummies of the wise old owls perched high on the branches of the wise old oak tree, who hooted profound words of wisdom to the critters below, advising them to embrace the magic of their imagination and celebrate the extraordinary in the ordinary, a message that resonated deeply with Percival McSnookerpants, who spent his days tickling the ivories of a magical piano that summoned rainbow-hued notes that danced through the air like ethereal butterflies, leaving trails of stardust in their wake, while a whimsical dragon named Ignatius puffed clouds of pastel-colored smoke that smelled of sugary cotton candy and dreams of adventure, as he soared through the boundless sky, carrying a basket filled with wishes that he sprinkled upon the world, creating a kaleidoscope of hope and wonder, a testament to the power of imagination and the sheer joy of nonsense, for in the land of Quixlaria, where dreams were the currency and laughter the national anthem, there was no limit to the extraordinary tales that could be woven from the threads of imagination, where rambling nonsense became the fabric of reality and unicorns wore sombreros while sipping tea with the toothy grin of a Cheshire cat.

With good reason... they're garbage! Arion showed that when you could skimp on the casing you could go hog-wild on the circuits (e.g. the best delay ever put into a placcy pedal, the Arion DDS-4, years ahead of the pack and still sounds incredible). Now, if we'd been discussing Maxon's beautiful 'Vintage Series', and had the PH-350 - the best phaser of all-time imo - mic'd up in stereo with the OD-820 going into it...... ooh la lah!

I wound see them, in every episode, over Josh's left shoulder, mocking me!! Josh was always one unit ahead of me!! The Filter was indeed the final and hardest unit to get. I had to enlist the help a 'pedal broker' mate, who managed to find the one and only unit available(at the time) in Japan. The Treble control on the Camo distortion MUST NOT LEAVE '0'!!!!😆

REM: I love this subject. How you feel about REM depends on when your entry point was. REM are almost 4 different bands: IndieREM, Major Label REM, Grunge REM, and Late Stage REM. If you're not into REM, you should probably listen to it in chunks, not on shuffle. My playlist is linked below.
The first 5 albums, Murmur through Document, are the foundation of indie/alt. They were college radio in the 80s. People who got into REM later struggle with these, with the possible exception of the Document singles. It was lo-fi. They lived in an abandoned church. They never thought they were going anywhere. They made music for their friends at the 40 Watt in Athens. Remember that when you listen. They were figuring it out as it goes. REM was the first college band to sign to a major with a huge-at-the-time deal with Warners. It opened the floodgates and I'll argue that it was the beginning of what would become the 90s flood.
Major REM is 3 albums: Green, Out of Time, and Automatic for the People. They won multiple Grammys, conquered the world and MTV made some people sick of them. Other people, thinking REM were a 'new' band, were horribly confused by things like the Losing My Religion video aesthetic and never understood why Stipe wasn't a typical 80s frontman. That's because they don't know the college radio start. The Drive and Ignoreland singles were a foreshadowing of what was to come - mid90s Grunge REM.
Grunge REM isn't grunge, its REMs spin on it. Peter Buck got a Boogie and a Les Paul and a RAT and a big ol' taste of glam. Stipe was friendly with Kurt Cobain and recognized he was now an elder statesman and an icon for the misfits, and he embraced it. You got two phenomenal albums. Monster and New Adventures in Hi-Fi. There is not a bad song on either, and I'll argue that Josh is insane for not mentioning The Wake-Up Bomb or Binky The Doormat. Fantastic. Check them out.
Then Bill Berry blew an aneurysm on stage and decided that farming quietly was better than dying behind a drumkit and everything changed. The hired the drummer from Ministry (yep, Ministry, Bill Reiflin) who could play the parts but didn't sing. REM was always 3 voices harmonizing and losing Bill changed the dynamic. The albums were no longer great. They had great singles, but losing Bill was a lot. All The Way To Reno and Imitation Of Life, from Reveal, are among the most beautiful things they've ever written. The second-last studio album, Accelerate, was New Adventures Part II. It's a solid album with some outstanding songs, but it was clear that REM knew they were repeating themselves, and their integrity mattered. Soon, it was a wrap.
MTV did a longass documentary on them a few years ago. Every minute is fantastic. It's not gloss. Nothing is papered over.
Here's my 79 song REM Spotify list, in chronological order. It's everything you need and nothing you don't. Please notice that 11 songs are from New Adventures. There are only 13 songs on the album.

Before Rieflin -whom i love, rip- came Joey Waronker. He was there for the up and reveal eras. Not much touring during those years but he got the band into playing some songs off Murmur again.

I was in my teens listening to REM on local college radio (KBVR, Oregon State University), as well as a lot of 'underground' music.
Stipe's voice is iconic, and I pretty much like everything they've done. The indie music still holds a special place in my musical heart.
      Thanks for the playlist! 🙏

Regarding why they use English on their Japan-exclusive pedals: It's actually quite common to see English terms in everyday Japanese as a sort of loanword thing. "Let's! " is often used for motivational phrases. "Viking" is used for buffets type restaurant since the original "Smörgåsbord" was deemed not quite compatible with the Japanese audience. Also "Effector" for effect pedal. If it's a non-Japanese term, they often use it right away or do as many adjustments as necessary to make it more marketing friendly. Additionally they didn (afaik) not use Japanese for their early pedals anyway, so it makes sense to stick to an already established terminology.

Using "viking" makes a lot of sense just from a phonetic standpoint - pronounced in Japanese, it's "bai-kee-n-gu", where "smorgasbord" would wind up as "su-mo-ru-ga-s'-bo-ru-du", which is, I think you'll agree, a little silly.

Your dentist jam reminded me of the last time I was in getting a root canal... There I am with my unreasonable fear of the dentist drill, listening to Norah Jones on my headphones just trying to stay calm while slightly buzzing on nitrous oxide. The song I am listening to gets over and I can hear the music playing in my dentists office is AC/DC Highway to Hell. It was so non-typical "dentist office" music the absurdity of me bringing my own easy listening music while he was jamming out made me laugh. He blamed it on the NO2, but it still makes me laugh and I am pretty sure I'm not high on anything right now.

Gigantic R.E.M. fan here. Happy to see you picked New Adventures for your Record Time! That was a very ambitious album for them, because it was comprised almost entirely of material they were writing *and* recording on the road. Some songs are just lifted straight from soundchecks with no overdubs. Because of that, it does a great job capturing the feeling of being on the road. The album also managed to take the fuzzier sounds of their previous album (Monster) and refine & darken them a bit to fit the aesthetic of the band very well. Just a brilliant record.

Awesome video. I just bought a fireblade distortion and it's so good. The eq feels like a Amp in a box. Any way thanks for the video now my pedal will increase 200 percent in value. 😆

Well that was an eye opener 😳.....jams were great as usual and honestly I didn't think any of those pedals sucked . I rather liked them , even that can of bees distortion , nothing some EQ pedal couldn't fix ! Good one now I can't sleep !

Holy moly. I have a DE-F1 Delay on the floor under my desk. Have used it since forever and, you know what, it's not that bad. I keep thinking that I want to replace it with something like a Memory Man Deluxe or whatever, but the Maxon has been sufficient. Also, FWIW, I have an FL-301 reissue flanger. Outstanding!

REM are one of my favourite bands with the fewest albums I love. I generally prefer their 90s stuff (except out of time) overall and New Adventures is probably a top 5 favourite album of all time for me. Leave and How the West Was Won are stone cold classics imo. So glad to see it still getting some love 25 years after release.

    • @ross3818

One reason I like REM is how their songs sound so similar. The fact that they almost all have crying somewhere there is a little weird but what the hey.

In 1994, the Honda Fireblade was the hottest motorbike you could buy.
I never had one, but they were rad.
Pretty sure that was some kind of influence.

The looks on the face of the drummer and bassist during "Double Wide Kind of Life" has me laughing. A mixture of "this is really weird... but not bad... but okay we're going with it." LOL I love that and I like that gnarly sound.

Hi-Fi is my personal favourite. I still remember when I bought it new from the store and was sitting in a bus with a portable cd-player when a friend got in to the bus too and asked what I was listening, I replied that it is the new R.E.M. album and he asked is it any good and I replied that it is awesome!
