ハンドマスクマンは彼女に好かれるために主人公が猫被って作り上げた人格であって、主人公は彼女が「本当の自分」じゃなくて「猫被った自分」を好きになっちゃうのを恐れている、と。
1:08 のシーンで確かに一目瞭然ですね。
最後3:21 に膨れ上がった「I」＝「自分」が割れて彼女の目の前で「本当の自分」が顕になったけど、彼女はにっこり笑ってたのできっとお見通しだったんですね。

This song never gets old, I've always related to it so much more than anything else in my life. I love how the different characters can serve as metaphors for whatever your going through, whoever you are:
the masked man - who you aspire to be
the boy with "phases" - you, throughout everything that changed you
the girl - your partner/crush, who helps you only once they saw you finally burst

Just my opinion but i think the girl supposedly to be the goal he's trying to reach.
I would say the exact opposite; the masked man is a dramatized, "perfect", form of what the boy tries to act like, but it's not himself. He finds himself relying on this persona more and more in life, even bringing himself into a relationship with his crush. This is where the trouble starts, he relies on this persona and even finds himself willingly putting on the mask in situations where the character itself knows he needs to be himself (1:45) and this eventually leads to the girl and persona's relationship progressing, but the boy himself feels he is just a spectator to it. At this point he realizes his mistake and starts to work on his confidence and independence, rejecting the mask, and trying to be himself. This is difficult for him though, as he still has all the pressures the persona had that he isn't used to, and eventually he bursts, but the girl is still there for him.
In other words it's a story about self-actualization, becoming your ideal, best version of yourself, in order to achieve happiness. However by using a version of himself that is untrue, even when everything is going good, he isn't happy, and so works on becoming a version of himself he can be proud of

There's already a great comment about this, but I kinda wanna add to it: The glove head man is his idol persona, but from the future (since this song is inspired by Jibun Kaigi, where a young boy is in conflict caused by 2 different versions of his future selves.) and his future self believes that the only way people will notice him is by donning that persona, and the young one is being convinced by his older version to keep using the persona so he can get together with the girl he likes. Throughout the phases, the younger version figures out that he doesn't need to be the persona to get together with the girl he likes, so he decides to pursue her as himself instead of as the persona which is why his older version looks a bit disappointed and why the younger version looks happier in Phase 3 than in 1 and 2.

Oh yea! Never realised that it was the mask he was putting on. Also you can see him taking of the mask at 3: 23 when I'd guess he breaks down and shatters the idol apperance. Which is followed by the girl smiling at him. So good!
Edit: 1:59 and similar scenes, would then be the thought of fully taking on the apperance creeping up on him, but he rejects it.

In my opinion i think the masked man is an idealized version of how the main character sees himself. They have the same moves and its implied in multiple shots that the mask is a euphemism/symbol of sorts. The masked man isnt weighed down by insecurities (in this case they're actually literal physical beings) or clones of himself debating over what to do (probably symbolism for second guessing/doubts) and he's able to act as he wants, rather confident in comparison to our constantly conflicted main character. However its because of this reason he's somewhat of a mental crutch. It's very easy for all of us to let imaginary scenarios play out where we are a hero or better versions of ourselves instead of actually trying to improve. In fact, the MC even misses one of his chances to interact with the girl because he beats himself up over not being the masked man (shown in 1:46) in the umbrella scene. He meets her and has the chance to interact, but instead points to the masked man. This implies that instead of interacting with her, he walked past her and let his ideal self deal greet her (aka only in his imagination). However she starts to show signs of reciprocating feelings for him and in this he starts to get a confidence boost. He finally realizes that letting the masked man interact with her won't do anything for him and starts to become the person he wants to be instead of leaving it to someone else. The masked man is relegated to a side character instead of being the star of the show that he was in the beginning.
I also think that the rocket ship launching is symbolic of every time the main character attempts social interaction with the girl or just in general. It explains why its done so many times and also makes the moment when the MC poses with the launch a more triumphant moment because he's finally confident and ready to get out there.
