The OB-X8 is expensive. I wouldn't say highway robbery, except when compared to software clones that come very close and barely cost anything in comparison. The OB-X8 is probably the ultimate re-issue of a classic highly sought after analog synthesizer. Unlike the UB-Xa, It's the real deal. You get the abilities of the OB-X, Xa & OB-8 and can even load in the presets from the original cassettes. It has many more updated features too. I'd be more likely to buy the UB-Xa due to the huge price difference, but I'd think the OB-X8 would better match the sounds of the originals, and you don't need 3 different versions of the keyboard to get all the classic sounds. The build quality of the OB-X8 is also a lot higher. With all of Behringers clones, many people say they don't sound exactly like the originals, but probably close enough for most of us.......just like software clones. Close enough. With excellent VST clones, I'm not really sure I need either the OB-X8 or UB-Xa however. Until that became possible, having an OB-X series synth seemed like the ultimate to me.
Hi @classicarcadeamusementpark4242 Stand and Deliver! I'm a dandy highwayman...... I do not dispute that the Oberheim OB-X8 is a desirable keyboard and would give you all those classic sounds. I have bought the Behringer UB-Xa because it does give me many of the sound options of the classic rock songs of the 80's and 90's. I will be honest the Behringer unit is built like a tank and honestly sounds awesome, with the little time I have spent with it due to the house renovations. And on your last point I will sit on the fence regarding the VST option given that I tend not to use them. Jon
I agree that the OB-X8 price is ridiculous. 5 grand for an old 8 voice synth design with no effects?? What a joke. I bought a 3rd Wave -- 24 voices, great filters, effects, massive layering, flexible high quality wavetable engine -- same price. Perhaps still overpriced, but a better value than the OB that's for sure. I'll buy the OB-X8 when they liquidate them for peanuts.
Hi @fizgak I think there have been enough comments on this channel about the cost of the Oberheim OB-X8. The price has definitely been a prickly subject in the community. But I do like your comment about buying liquidated stock! Jon
