Keynote Speaker Quentin Tarantino at UCLA TFT's Design Showcase West 6/4/16

- Two-time Academy Award-winning writer/director Quentin Tarantino was the keynote speaker at the 14th Annual Design Showcase West on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television's Freud Playhouse where students from the nation's top graduate design programs will exhibit innovative costume, scenic, sound, lighting and production designs. Attendees had the chance to preview the portfolios of these emerging artists before they win their Tony, Oscar and Obie Awards.
Named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by Time, Tarantino has received multiple Academy, Golden Globe and BAFTA Awards and was nominated for an Emmy and a Grammy Award. He is one of the most celebrated filmmakers of his generation with cult hits such as Jackie Brown, Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. In 2012, Django Unchained released to critical acclaim and became the highest-grossing film of his career exceeding $425 million at the worldwide box office. Django earned Tarantino his second Oscar for Best Screenplay, and the film received numerous Golden Globes, BAFTA's and Academy Awards, including Best Picture. His latest film The Hateful Eight, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell and Jennifer Jason Leigh, received three Academy Awards nominations. Tarantino's diverse work as a producer exemplifies both his commitment to first-time filmmakers and his support for his experienced peers and colleagues.
Design Showcase West, created by UCLA TFT, is the only national entertainment design showcase on the West Coast featuring the work of students graduating from the nation's top university design programs, including UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television; American Film Institute; California Institute of the Arts; California State University, Long Beach; Carnegie Mellon's West Coast Drama Clan; Chapman University's Dodge College of Film and Media Arts; New York University; San Diego State University; University of California, Davis; University of California, Irvine; University of California, San Diego; University of Missouri, Kansas City; University of Nevada, Las Vegas; and University of Texas, Austin. Exhibits range from costume design to scenic, sound, lighting and production design. Studio executives, film and television producers, artistic directors and professional designers attend DSW to meet the fresh rising stars in the industry.
As part of DSW, the UCLA TFT David C. Copley Center for Costume Design has established a unique partnership with Swarovski, the world's leading producer of precision-cut crystal, to confer its Swarovski Shooting Star Award upon a UCLA TFT M.F.A. costume design student who has shown exemplary strides in his/her work.
The Copley Center/Swarovski collaboration includes the annual Swarovski/Copley Center Sketch to Screen: Costume Design Oscar Celebration; the Swarovski Designer-in-Residence program; and the Swarovski Shooting Star Award for Excellence in Costume Design.
Design Showcase West is made possible through the support of our corporate partner Spylight and benefactor M·A·C Cosmetics. It is hosted by the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television's Department of Theater and distinguished members of the Art Directors Guild, Local 800; United Scenic Artists, Local 829; Costume Designers Guild, Local 892; Set Decorators Society of America; Motion Picture Costumers, IATSE Local 705; and International Silks and Woolens.

being a huge fan of both Gilliam and Tarantino, I am just over the moon that Terry gave Quentin the best advice ever.
At first glance the angle of the shot makes it look like he drove his car into a hedge and he’s playing it cool for the gawkers by adjusting his wipers.
He's a great story teller, that's why this talk is so brilliant. He's told us a great narrative.

He truly is an encyclopedia of movies bcz he loves movies, he knows them, he loves talking about them, he lives, eats and breathes movies. Just an amazing person, he's like a kid again, giddy when he talks movies. I love listening to him.

His films are good but unpretentious is no joke the last word in the English language, or any other language, that I would use to describe Tarantino
At the beginning of the speech, he is reading off the paper; going by the book so to speak. Not even a few seconds later, he folds it and puts it in his pocket like an absolute boss. This particular detail really speaks to who Quentin is.
He’s never gone by the book since he never went to film school. He let his passion guide him, much like this speech. Inspiring...
I think that was more him using his notes to help him introduce his talk. To commence in a "proper" manner and lay out the ground work of what he would be discussing. After that his talk is really more reminiscing about events that he experienced which he doesn't need reference for. He just free styles that.

It's rare to see someone talk so passionately about something they truly love. You can't help to be inspired by that even if you're not a fan of whatever it is they're talking about. This man is a legend.

I greatly appreciate listening to Quentin share his stories, with these students, at this event. To be an artist, is a calling, not for the faint of heart. Dreams into action, what it's all about. Seems like yesterday, we were working together on Sam Shepard's "True West" in Allen Garfield's acting class. I'm happy for the man, his success, for his creativity. COOL to see him in this light...
Allen Garfield in Skateboard is all I can think of! Ridiculous movie, but he tries his best.

Tarantino is one of the ones whose always looking to share his insights; as it were with his own younger self, but at the same time with everyone else, and with me. It is this element of his work that all of his greatest moments are built upon. For the record, Inglorious Bastards is awe inspiring storytelling. Kill Bill volumes one and two are underrated even though they still garnered a lot of appraise. And I think his biggest mistake he ever made is his interpretation of Bruce Lee in Once Upon a Time. Lastly, I love this talk that he made. I could listen to him lecture for hours. He has such a inquisitive instinct to seek out the dramatic and the interesting. And it's when he talks that you really feel his talent.
I don't think the Bruce Lee depiction was a "mistake" I think it was an intentional wish-fulfilment scenario. Tarantino claims that Bruce Lee in real life was very disrespectful to stuntmen and didn't like them, whereas Tarantino has nothing but the highest respect for stunt people and it's my sneaking suspicion that - in that scene - he was venting a little creative revenge on Lee on stuntmens' behalf.
I guess we all have to thank his new love Courtney Hoffman for this beautiful speech. (and I see her happy there sitting at the table at the end)

i love how he had difficulties talking with the notes (i think because he was too focused on looking like he was not using them) but once he thought fuck these notes he started to talk a lot more spontaneous.
He should teach Drama in college after he retires. Or better still, he would be great at lectures.

@Michael Murphy to be able to act isn’t apart of teaching drama. Quentin has a deep understanding of what makes something dramatic and good, even if he can’t act.

Tarantino's talent is perfectly shown here: He seems like a very humble and caring individual, but on a movie set has created some of the most violent/action-packed throughout the past 2 decades. Although, I don't know personally how he behaves during film production, I can assume it isn't pretty when things go south.
unlike most directors i haven't really heard anything bad about qt flippin out on set....in fact there are alot of behind the scenes type videos of him directing and hes pretty much the same there as he is here
He's one of the, if not THE Most Hard Working writer-director in Hollywood. Writing, Pre Production, Shooting and Post Production he is 100% all into it.
On the set it's all about the day and the job to be done, he's very kind but also very serious, he know's everyone on the set and almost everyone's name (and there's hundreds of people). He directs right next to the camera (not like other directors sitting in the back watching the monitor).
He's a huge motivator and he really pushes everyone to do their best and to unite the cast & crew like a family, so working on any of his projects its like an adventure and it's very fun (literally fun!). You can watch tons of behind the scenes on dvd's and specials from almost every of his movies, and there's interviews to all of the actors who ever worked with him and they all talk about the same thing adding in their personal details and stories.
I mean, true. But Kubrick new light and film inside and out. He started as a still photographer after all.

Beautiful and inspiring speech, but there are good examples of directors taking over of the tech side also. Simple case: Cameron. Model builder. Carpenter... On some level Nolan. Or stuntdouble becoming an actor (Quentin knows) or even director: the Wick series.
