This was going so well. Troubleshooting a customer's Metropoulos Marshall 1987 Plexi Clone, changing tubes, rebiasing, adding a post phase inverter master volume (PPIMV), and then it happened...it caught fire.

That socket is bad now, even if you clean all the carbon off it can still conduct. Please note: this is a DIY Metroamp kit build, not a Metropoulos replica. Great video and channel!
Thanks for clarifying. The arc didn't occur on the socket, it occurred in mid air like a Jacob's Ladder.
I agree. It looks like a Metropoulos kit put together by somebody else, looks sloppy regardless of the fx loop.
They should have bent the pins of the sockets outwards to keep them separate. Looks like they didn’t trim the excess wire on the terminals and that will conduct again, especially if the play the amp unloaded accidentally, the fly back voltages in the OT will arc to the heaters again. Don’t ask me why I know! LOL
Thanks for clarifying that George. I was going to post that this amp looks nothing like the one you built for me. Night and day difference.
lmao..... pause the video @10:25 and tell yourself that arc is in the air. you mite rethink it. 🔥💥💥💫
Please bring the kits back, George! I'll do better than this guy did, I promise!
BTW, wicked awesome quick reaction on blowing out that fire!
Hide the children!!!'
Brad says "fuck" numerous times starting at 10:18.
I just love it when that kind of shit happens. :-)
Ive had that plate-heater arc happen as well. Gets the blood pumping!! I had.to.replace.my socket , it was full of carbon haha. It's cool that yours didn't burn up.
It's definitely a kit amp.. not a bad build but metropolis builds are some premo sheit.
Nice playing! All that trouble is for the sound you get, with a "Marshall" clone,or original.Had to replace a transformer in a "6550" tubed Marshall, years'ago.Bias problems' and incorrect fuse on the transformer.Lots' of fun! ; )
it's called expanded metal. that's the gold mesh stuff used for the vent screen.
Oh no...my respect for brad has turned into enjoying his dismay. How do I fix this?
Uncle dog always using current limiter home maid device if you shorter something nothing happened except lightning bulb
Wouldn't have prevented this.
incindiery tone !! metropilus
Hmmmm...... first a beer then a fire. We call that a clue.
Scary moment there!
WHY don't you have a current limiter?? It really is not safe to fire up an amp like that with blown fuse without one. Variac helps but you can still pull enough current to take out a transformer if u had a shorted component but it is of course your choice. I'm a reg watcher of your videos so thank u for alll the great content. And kudos to u for being man enough to show your mistake and laugh it off. There are many that would not do that. There are plans online and at The Amp Garage to build a current limiter if u are interested.
a firecracker would have calmed your nerves
Looks like someone used a soldering iron to burn a hole for that switch. Think I'd have used a cutting torch.
G'day, Brad! Great video! (here's neat rib tickler) Talking Heads - Burning Down the House 🔥 - LIVE - Los Angeles (from) '83 😉 (bit.ly/2R8zFjl ) That's right... so much energy. (David Byrne) "It's hard not to stand up, and move to this." Enjoy!
Cheers! 🤣🔥✌🏼❤️
Friedman got his start modding these. Great amps, but some butt hole decided to fuck it up.
A fine display of arc welding, Brad, and without a helmet ;) The Underwriter's Laboratory would never approve.
Didn't Underwriters also try to debunk some stuff a few years back? No longer credible. :)
@@TheGuitologist That Les Paul sounds like butter in your hands! someday we must cross the Atlantic and jam!
It goes to show, that drinking and drivers don't mix.
Can't argue that one!
You enjoy one Beer on the job and KABOOM!
Try 3 or 4 and now we have a video!😜
"So I just changed the tubes, adjusted the bias ...... changed my underwear..."
Damn! Almost all of us who have worked on tube amps have had something like that happen. If it hasn't happened to you, it will. Glad that the only casualty was your shorts.
5:41 - it takes a lot to mess up one of those.
Me: hold my beer...
People that don't know what they're doing, shouldn't get involved with things like that. They need to know their limitations. Bring it to a professional, instead of trying to cut corners and save money.
Oh dear, no sense of humour alert...
@ Gary Stevens correction... Me: hold my India Pale Ale hipster bullshit beer...

Brad the top vents came on the 100 watt Marshalls not on the 50s.
Great vid Fire Marshall Bill !!
Don’t probe me, bro.
"Looks budget" =" like shit" ! ;-) Thanks for sharing this Brad ,always fun and entertaining !
About ten and a half min in. FLEX!💪🏼

Hey Brad, It's like this, the Guitologist, Uncle Doug,
El Paso Tube Amps & All American Five Radio are my go-to channels for Tube Amp Information and an entertaining good time. All the best, keep one hand in your pocket, Cass. P.S. Working on 1965 Gregory Mark 1.
Thanks, Cass. Nice to be in good company.
Well you didn’t set the amp on fire. You set the plastic end of your probe on fire and vaporized the metallic tip. At least you didn’t “let the smoke out” which is what we used to call it when we fried a circuit board. Good thing you were dealing with antique electronics (tubes). Today’s stuff would have just turned to shit.
Today's stuff would have never even went to a repair shop, it would have went straight to the landfill which is sad
Y'all see how FAST he blew out that little flame?! Yep... this ain't his first barbeque....
I got bronchitis!
using duracell again i see.
LOLOLOLOLOL!!!
I would have used Energizer for the smoother tone...
Brad the Guitologist stars in " Excitement She Wrote! " Ha! That's one way to wake up! Fast reaction man.
Pale ale was cool long before the hipster trend.
Bass has been around for ~ 250 years? The IPAs since British colonization of the Indian subcontinent. Truth is most hipsters can't afford more than one IPA nightly and switch over to PBR after happy hour😉
Enjoyed my first Sierra Nevada pale at the Bristol, KYCPA, Main Street Louisland, KY circa 1996.
The Commodore is a tasty brew.
Hail to the Pale!
Another great vid, Brad.
...that Count Chocula is fantastic.
Joel Spaulding that’s why I just buy lots of blue ribbon, to capitalize on the fact that I can’t afford nice beer.
Hendrix, Townshend, Blackmore, you're in esteemed company, burning tubes, SMOKIN' TONE!!!
Brad my name is Stephen and I live in savannah Georgia where there is only one guitar shop in town and as someone learning about guitars I'm having a tough time finding sources for good information on how to set up guitars any advice
For setups, I've done some vids, search "Guitologist setup", or check channel's like a Randy Shartinger or Will's Easy Guitar.
Ain't nobody got time for that!
Aint got no shoes or nothin
Is that a haircut or the effects of flash-over?
Can you link the lung infused fire extinguisher in the description box please 😁😁😁😂😂😂. Fighter pilot reflexes Brad. It's lovely to see that LP paired with the Plexi.
I had a 100W superbass in the 70s which blew the ht fuse several times. Why? - the EL34 sockets were dirty from dust and nikotin and got conductive. After scratching them clean the ht fuse didnt blew anymore.
Good grief... sloshed coffee all over my lap when ‘that’ happened!! ... Great way to wake me up! LOL :) How have I made it to 50 yrs old and not known about these amps? I was hoping you’d fix that fucked up job on the mini switch, but that’s just the OCD demon in me... LOL
I've done my share of arc welding. But never set one on fire. Maybe you should drink bud light.
I had a similar thing happen when I was working on my brother's Roost amp. The insulation on the anode wire was rubbing against a filament pin and broke down while I was testing it. Sparks and smoke!
I'm sure someone mentioned it but 50 watt Marshalls did not have the top grill only the 100's did.
LMAO...Love your vids Bad...when I saw the title, i was thinking major blow up and fire...I used to do MV line work...when a 12Kv line would go, now THERE'S a fireworks show! Keep up the great work and vids man. Peace out! :)
Play... Come on Baby Light My Fire!!!!
Imagine it's 200 years ago and all you have to communicate with are smoke signals. How lucky would that be!?!
I doubt 200 years ago I'd be accused of cultural appropriation for using smoke signals.
:-)
Are you now a player in the UA-cam thumbnail infinity war? LOL!
SRT Amplification yes, and Sweet Brown is my secret weapon.
He didnt have no shoes or nothin, Jesus.
Hey Brand 2 very quick yes or no questions, you said something about burning a hole in the plexi, is that "plexiglass? and is that why Marshall style circuits are called "plexi's"? If the answer is "yes" that'll blow my mind, I always thought "plexi" was somekind of electronic principle or formula or something.....I dunno why.
flad yes. The old faceplates were plexiglas.
Dont know why he uses that crappy fluke MM when he has that awesome $9.99 centech right there on the bench...
Lord Jesus it's a fire. I love it. Laughed my ass off when I saw that caption
*Like watching you work on amps Brad. By the way Smokey The Bear tweeted he wants that exact 🔥 mod in his amp too 🚒🚓👍😁*
Holy Goodness G-man! THAT was exciting! Good job...I really dig your vids.
LMAO "WTF! WTH!" I nearly spit my pepsi all over this laptop.
Could've been a high frequency oscillation caused by simply loading an active circuit with your meter, I've had it happen to me a couple of times. If you've got a radio or TV on in the background, they'll usually squeal too. The last time it happened, it blew up my expensive Tektronix meter. :-(
Ain't nobody got time fo that!!
Dang you blew that out quick! You must be a monster at birthday parties.
wow the magic smoke escaped and ya still got her up and runnin . so instead of a (chibson gibson) that's a (Michall Marshall) but they are honest about building a Good replica and charge accodingly.
Nice music you made up at the end, making yourself move.
Hey yo did you write that arpagio thing at the end there.?.? Very nice. If its yours its beautiful if not let me know who it is please.?.?
I was just noodling.
"Come on baby light my fire"
😂
“Try to set the amp on...Fire!” 🔥
I thought things like that only happened to me.
Metropoulos Amplifiers is a premium brand amp. They’re not cheap. They’re often more expensive than a used Marshall of the same variety. So this one with the Butch Hackney mod leaves me skeptical. Is it a real Metropoulos? Who would do that?
Solar Guitar Studio what is the Butch Hackney mod?
That might be a Metro kit or Valvestorm, but it" does not" look like George's work
I don't even think it's a Metro Kit. Definitely not George's work (or anyone that's ever worked in his shop).
That reminds me of the story Eddie Van Halen told of when he was monkeying around with a Marshall head in his room that he bought from the music store he was working at. in his words: “I opened the amp up and saw this thing. I found out later it was a bias control, which controls the power to the output tubes. I’m poking around, and all of a sudden I touch this huge blue thing. My God - it was like being punched in the chest by Mike Tyson. My whole body flexed stiff, and it must have thrown me five feet. I’d touched a capacitor. I didn’t know they held voltage.”
Fire Fire Fire ! I Am the Great Cornholio ! Great vid dude !
Never noticed the Count Chocula statue! Cool!
I miss Mojo Jo Jo.
Haha! The Powerpuff Girls! My kids used to watch that when they were young!
Wow this thing sounds great! I'm going to have to look into one.
Summer haircut? did ya get kissed when u got it? they got close enough, lol
Mike Collins 26-year-old chick with a nose ring did it. I started talking about music with her and she said she really only went to see DJs.
Sh*t yourself often??
Please set the replay to choreograph with the first 9 seconds of this video: ua-cam.com/video/BJs_L7yq5qE/v-deo.html&t=8
05:33, no crap, at first 'fleeting' glimpse, I thought the ceramic wirewound said "Vicodin"!! This is the same circumstance that forced me to damn near eat a "tantalum" that appeared to be a Chiclet ....
,,, appears to be "Zippo clone".....
(Note to self: "am slowly turning into Mr. Magoo"; must practice saying "ROADHOG"!!)
Good Amp Techs are made, not born. And this folks, is how they're made! Forged in fire. haha!!!
Awesome Channel. Thank you for all you do.
Holy crap! Shows that b+ isn't just a number
I need a new fire extinguisher in my shop, extra baking soda or something...... lol I'm fortunate that hasn't happened to me....yet. God forbid! Knock on wood! Anyway enjoyed the vid Brad. Thanks !
Tube amps are soooooo forgiving that kind of mistake on a big solid state you just killed all the outputs and on a big amp that would be 16 or more hifi amps in general are much more picky
Have you ever repurposed a Bogen MX 60 a it was the frist pa amp that a i got new in the 60s uesed it a lot treated it bad but it came tru with flying colors was based on the 8417 power tubes cutting edge at that time great tube but no longer made so I revised it to work on 6550 GE but it’s way to clean so I was going to put the inputs in series I think three stages should be right now also add a standby and a soft start switch what do you think ?
In the Eternal Words of the late, great Phil Hartman's Saturday Night Live Frankenstein:
"FIRE BAD!!!"
RIP.
10:24 It deserves an Ozzy Man’s Review
Did you see the size of that chicken?
I love a good IPA. Just don't get it mixed up with the other IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol).
Yikes! RIP Probe . Hipster beers and probes dont mix apparently ; lesson learned. Shit happens.
Finally a video i can relate to. :)
It's a dangerous job, glad your OK.
Someone def used their soldering iron to make that hole for the FX loop switch lol. I like the vents on the top of Marshall amps, i want my tubes getting as much air flow as possible, but hey thats just me.
(PPIMV), you can try Lar's version 2meg but it's unnessary just CRANK IT....and I don't know what the fuck you did either biased it too hot/runaway.... and just assuming never heard of or seen anything differeing in that build/era it WAS 22nf's throughtout and PI input. Tried just about every configuration there too...idk only like 5150/Peavey's/Bugera put a stupid big coupling in the front like a .1 all the way to 274s-334s...That still don't make any sense either letting pretty much everything through and low end that don't need to be going through there anyways.....I was on to something/configuration I thought was better...it's the stupid big PI input .1 and .1 output couplings and there still a shit load of low end when it's opened up...It is literally SF Fender style...BF wasss way too tight and smallll sounding with that .0022... It is dude Fender did that right and more Mesa like....
hippster bullshit beer is awsome
Why do you hate poor people,,,sorry, budget people? I am a maker, shimsen, shakuhachi, didgeridoo, percussion, you name it - the limits are nine bucks a month at the 99-cent store. Budget people. You snob, you. Play one note, like Albert King, in penance. Jesus Loves You. I don't. Much later, gator...
I knew before I read your comment, regarding George not building that amp. The man takes pride in everything he does. He doesn't half ass Anything. He's the best and most knowledgable that there is, besides Dave Friedman. That would have Never Happened if George Built That Amp. I assure you.
For a moment, I thought you'd picked up a hot handful off the HT. I once bought a non-working Peavey head and picked up a good few jolts while testing it after repair. 600V can sting something fierce.
Mr. Guitologist, discovered your channel just recently and after enjoying several of your videos I have decided I could drink a beer with you!. I too am an Ohio River rat originally, don't care what my hair out clothes look like. Wanna hang out undisturbed in my basement with my guitar toys! Also you have no hesitation to call out an asshole when necessary! Now in my 50's I really appreciate others who call out dumbfucks! So yea, good beer buddy I'm sure! Keep it up brother!
Welcome to the channel.
@@TheGuitologist also you replaced Sasquatch as my go to fall asleep videos. Not an insult I assure you.

Why would you burn a hole for the switch? hahaha I guess if you don't have a working drill and want to get an amp done, that is one way to do it.
My guess as to what actually happened is this, somehow one of the tube socket pins with high voltage on it got inadvertently shorted to ground, and the pin with high voltage on it happened to be connected to a circuit with inductance in it, maybe the output transformer primary, or the choke that formed part of the B+ HV filtering, anyway, the momentary short-circuit caused a huge Back-EMF spike which triggered the formation of an arc between the pins.
what the heck bro? you dont even play with a pick? you sound and play amazing as always, but surely if you played gigs in the past, present and future you would have to use a pic cos you would wear down your fingernails? this was a great video and some of your amp knowledge is starting to rub off on me.I just watch this stuff as a soothing voice about rock n roll amps while i was "relaxing" after a "really good weekend" and i am stoked that some of this stuff is making sense now-like 5% if that.rock on!
I’ve I’m being honest I’ve never seen any other amp but Marshall go on fire. I just had a comb back in the 90s mid rehearsal just start frying.
GREAT LAKES that's from my old home town of Cleveland. Great Stuff. Miss it. Get the Christmas Ale when it hits around October. They were the original and have the best.
When you buy matched pair of tubes, those ones are never identical. It's simply the process of building them that makes it impossible to accomplish. The best mod you can do to an amp is to add a second bias potentiometer, before doing other crazy mods! I don't understand why amp manufacturers don't do that stock? Maybe it's because of some arrangements they subscribe with tube companys?
what happen was you fucked up momentarily. WTF? lol shouldn't be drinking any alcohol while working on electronic equipment Brad...
Great Lakes makes some good hipster bullshit. My fav would be Edmund Fitzgerald Porter. It's dark and smokey, like that fake Marshall.
Hi Brad. Love your vids. Is that guitar straight through to the amp? Great tone without pedals if that's the case. Cheers from Perth Western Australia.
I NEVER demo amps with pedals on this channel. Defeats the purpose.
Ok, last thing I gotta do is get this switch mounted.... HONEY! You see what I did with my flame thrower!?!?
