The robot looks like Wall-E's girlfriend watched too much Tokyo Ghoul.
Trueeeee oh god I can’t unsee that....I ship it and I love your work btw
480th like and no one cares
i love you
i meant i love your channel
@i hate anime tokyo ghoul
The sister was anything but cold and distant. She was extremely caring and tuned into Rachel, almost becoming a surrogate mom. I found Jack to be the most interesting character in this episode, and the fact she looked like a young Lindsay Lohan made her all the more appealing.
she looks a lot like lindsay ur right
I feel the entire episode was just a big middle finger to Disney. That makes me appreciate it all the more
Miley hesitated to get in the truck because it was a mouse exterminator truck .... callback to her Disney days?! haha
Unfortunately there will always be someone who wants that lifestyle.
Nah. It had a Disney-like happy ending that was shoehorned in there. A good ending would have been to actually show what a monster Disney is, kill off the main character like Disney does in real life, and move on.
@@CatGamer-wc2ij Ashley turned out to save herself, kind of like Miley or Selena Gomez
As a star wars fan, I support this. Look what they did to my baby!
Miley was perfect for this role, this episode is immensely different from what we’re used to in Black Mirror, the first episode with a really happy ending
Only happy ending? What about San Junipero, Striking Vipers, Hang the DJ, etc?
San Junipero was not such a happy ending id say. It is superficially happy when they are finally able to live together in the simulation but on the other hand its that black mirror greyness of is it really living if you are living in a simulation?
@@Kenoboi_42is it really happy to live in a simulation?
@kiboma4209
Who cares, they gay, so yay
@@Kenoboi_42striking vipers was NOT a happy ending 😭. Not only is bro actively getting cheated on, but he’s addicted to what’s basically a virtual s*x sim with a dude he doesn’t even have feelings for. He’s bound to end up in a divorce with the game as his only enjoyment in life.
This made me like this episode more actually

@@helmenhjelmen1955 this was the worse episode, felt like a Disney movie towards the middle and end like wtf and how hated how her career in human form is quite reserved but as soon as she reform in to the robot the character is loud, annoying and a bootleg comedian

as much as i love this episode, this didnt really feel like a black mirror episode. it felt like an actual movie. no dystopian society, no groundbreaking discoveries. this felt like a legit movie that would come to theaters or something. but, that does not have to be a bad thing. there are a few plot holes i noticed, but i'm not gonna get into that.
welp, now i feel stupid XD. turns out it was supposed to feel like an average (or above average) movie. the magic of black mirror is absolutely magnificent!
I think it was taking a dig at the music industry

I actually really liked this episode, the is actually the only episode that has a happy ending without it being bittersweet!
Exactly, it also makes the show less predictable!
Hang the DJ had a purely happy ending
Hang the DJ was sad for you the simulated consciousnesses that ended.

Regarding RJandAT. This analysis sort of takes it for red that the rock music is more sincere. But it can also be a form of hero worship.
I'd agree that Hang the DJ was a happy ending. Reality wasn't the only thing that mattered, but the _story_. Not only that but it's not like reality ended on a bad note or anything either.
However an indisputable happy ending is San Junipero. Striking Vipers was happy IIRC (even though the episode itself was full of flaws and strangeness, that's not the issue being looked at here), as well as more-or-less Nosedive although I guess one could call it bittersweet or silver lining or something.
san junipero, crocidile
No one has ever been inside of an empty room.
yeah you're right because then the room is not empty anymore.
okay captain obvious
What dies this have to do with the video?
@@powerofthec5908 The mention of mirrors? Kind of, I can't really explain it. But
*Deep*
to be fair this episode was not my favourite but it had a good analogy
Fair enough!
The contract part pays tribute to all those kpop stars getting tortured with these contracts.
Hey, that what I was thinking too! I think this episode is a satire of pop culture in general, but ESPECIALLY KPOP culture where idols are shaped to be characters that might not be the real them or an exaggerated or perfected version of themselves and people gullibly fall in love with these "characters" without truly knowing the real them or forgetting that they're humans as well...which unfortunately results in overly obsessive fans/stans (like saesangs for instance). It's a problem in Western pop culture as well, but not as extreme as KPOP IMO as Western celebrities from what I've seen so far are able to live out their real lives (a bit) more in comparison.
I think that line about the cramps relates to this story on Hannah Montana where she had her first period on her set.
Really? I thought that was so out of nowhere I was like “why mention that”😂😂
That’s what I was thinking. She had on white pants at the time and had no choice to wear it on set
Even if this episode got a lot of hate, I really loved seeing Miley make it and could tell it was about her and her career. The common breakdown of child stars has always troubled me and i am glad she is one who pretended to be going off the deep-end and is actually probably one of the most stable ones after having gone through child stardom.
“Most of your heroes are not who you think they are.” Love this quote from you! Just recently found out about your channel, and I loooovvveee your authentic content.
Honestly, even though Rachel has probably getting into the music that her idol actually to make. It shows that she CAN see Ashley as a person.
As rather than, like the other fans, just deciding that "It's not the idol I know." She actually at least TRIES to listen to it, and it's even shown to be the first person to act as a friend to Ashley in ANY capacity.
it was a good story, but not black mirror enough for me, like the rest of the season. i wanted to get scared! lol
i noticed those miley cyrus parallels though and thought they were cool.
i wish that they took the budget for bandersnatch and used it to make more episodes for this season.
Same, I wanted my 6 episode season!

This youtuber is reflecting on himself while making this video. This is the power of Black Mirror.
What I like about this episode is that it's a slap in the face to the audience that yeah technology is an important part of black mirror, but people are more relevant to the show and should not be ignored. This felt like an episode where people are taking the spotlight instead of tech like "oh no in trapped in a never ending augmented reality." It's about people vs. people. I also think that it makes the other episodes more impactful as it changes the audiences mindset from "oh sh*t this technology is dangerous, we shouldn't build it" to "whoever made this is really bad at their job or just doesn't understand human selfishness and self righteous ego enough."
That episode blew me away .... after all the negative comments on season 5 I read before this episode, I thought it was going to be terrible. So many twists and turns, as well as an awesome creative plot idea ... It is one of my top favorite episodes now, along with White Bear, White Christmas, and San Juanipero
i think it's influenced by idol culture in japan and south korea
most of idols are overworked and underpaid
the mangers take 70% of the profits
with ridiculos strict rules like no dating
Yep I know
Its not just them. It's artists from all over the world who get milked real bad. Like as the vid said duh Hannah Montana
you don’t know how scary the western music industry is huh
lol no
It’s like prostitution how the “idols” can’t have loves and lives of their own
I like the part at the end where the girls are leaving the club because they don't like ashleys new music. It shows how watered down music is now and the lack of substance and how the younger audience just eats it up without actually listening to the lyrics and understanding the meaning behind it.
I actually really like this episode so I was glad when I read that you were covering this episode. Also on a roll is such a bop!
Awesome to hear Adaija Packnet! I would pay good money to hear it live haha
@@BryceEdwardBrown I mean its not live but you can find the song and another one of hers on Spotify :) Hopefully that helps :)
It could be worse, at least they didn’t sing Wrecking Ball in the ending scene.
This is great. You really put this episode into perspective for me. It makes it much better than how surface layered I took it when I first watched it.
That's awesome to hear!
This was actually one of my favorite episodes. As soon as I finished watching it, I came right here 😄
Your take on this episode really is admirable and very outstanding! I really hope one day I could have a conversation with you about perceptions and comprehension of different topics revolving around life. Please do more videos regarding black mirror!
Will do! I'm glad you like them, thank you for the kind words Zainab M.
Your analysis is on point! it feels like exactly something that my IB Langlit teacher would appreciate. Thank you for making me critically think about all these episodes, haha. This actually confirmed my liking of the episode.
Thank you, that's really awesome to hear!
I’ve never been psyched out by a content creator as hard as I was by you. During the last few minutes when you started talking about personal growth, learning new skills, being happy with who you are, adaptive milestones... I just kept waiting for a segue into a sponsored sales pitch. I kept waiting and waiting and it never came.
Don’t know if I should be impressed by you, or disappointed in myself for being so cynical
As I said, in the video, it's okay to promote and sell products that you actually believe in. But when you're freedom of speech or creative freedom is compromised because your advertisers or employers are editing your script, that's when it becomes disingenuous, SkillShare's ad is separate from the core of my video and they do not affect what I say in my analysis.
I'm glad I could psych you out Solomon Rivers! haha
I was just stoked that Trent Reznor got a nod in an episode about musical authenticity.
Loved it!
I love watching those videos while cleaning my room it’s literally my favourite thing to do
Holy shit, I'm dying. I saw that sneaky China flag xD
On a side note, I've seen almost all of your black mirror videos(I've been saving bandersnatch for last!) and I gotta say I really felt this one. I can relate to the idea of always wanting to please someone and changing yourself a million times to fit the people you wanna please, but I never actually thought too much about how the pressure for celebrities might be way more since they're famous. I remember watching Hannnah Montana as a kid and thinking her new change seemed distasteful because it wasn't what she used to be. It wasn't what I was used to growing up. Back then I thought it was a stereotypical case of child celebrities who let fame get to their head and ending up being corrupt. But it was just them finally being true to who they were and not what they were expected to be.
Out of all your blackmirror analysis videos, this one is probably my favorite since it covers a topic that all people can probably relate to and has a message that I think everyone can appreciate ❤️❤️
Love your Black Mirror videos man! So insightful and you catch all of the little details I missed when watching it. Keep up the good work dude!!
I was glad to hear that you had a change of heart in regards to the all-time 'immediate succes vs authenticity' question. Really shows your personality growth. And as always enjoyed your analysis. Initially I didn't like the episode as much but now I realized I had overlooked some important messages 🤔
I also wondered if Britney Spears' situation wasn't an inspiration for this episode. Her story is extremely messed up as well. #FreeBritney
Technology is just a sideline in this episode. I first thought that its about commentary about child stars. But, its more about being a real "you." Its just going back to "15 Million Merits."
Anyway, great video as always! ☺
Exactly, thank you Kevin dela Cruz!
I agree that it feels like a disney episode, but that's a good thing since that's what the plot is about
I just noticed, the three darkest episodes are, White Bear, black musuem, white christmas. Very similar.
“Being satisfied in what I am doing.” MAN! I want that.
this episode definitely made me feel some typa way. i grew up with hannah montana as my favorite show and my entrance to the music world i used to idolize miley but as i grew up i realized miley cyrus isnt hannah montana or miley stewart or disney miley and learning that and seeing her grow and do what she REALLY loved was strange at first but somehow in the past year i found my way back to her, or to the real miley.
Never clicked on a notification so quickly 🙌🏼 I’ve been waiting for this one!! Great job!
Thank you Sarah O! Hopefully it was worth the wait, sorry for the delay haha
I love every episode of Black Mirror and binged every episode the minute seasons dropped. I've been binging your explanations now for a few days. I only just now realized there was a 1 year gap between your Fifteen Million Merits and Ashley Too videos, but I wanted to say I'm really impressed how the last year has affected your view of the ending. I've been disillusioned for a long time and when I saw your review I thought to myself, "Had I been Bing, I would've slit my own throat before selling out like that." Congrats on 120k subscribers, keep making content you enjoy!
I see that a lot of people dislike this episode because it's not sci-fi enough (or BM enough) but I don't get that. I am someone who has never liked sci-fi but I love Black Mirror and I think it's because the show is not about technology as much as it is about people and how we take advantage of scientific innovations.
Also, I resent the accusations that season five is somehow not BM enough! It's ridiculous! Richard Brooker himself said that the show is a box of (dark) chocolates as in you never know what you're gonna get. Not all episodes are hard to watch, not all of them have sad endings. But the creators don't owe us hard-to-watch episodes nor did they ever promise they would all be like that. The important part is that all episodes shine a light on important issues we need to address, they make us think and reflect upon ourselves when the episodes cut to black. That's the only thing we were promised and they sure did deliver on that!
Mans went off and spoke the truth🙏🙏🙏
Glad you agree Angel Deleon!
Good job, your choice to do what you want and not being fake is such an awesome inspiration for us and I at least really appreciate what you do... Basically do what you want and have a good time doing it.
Love the way you pay attention to details
The scene where Ashley O is freaking out about getting into the car is now even more hilarious in hindsight.
Loved the shot of the blizzard compagny during your speech
"I'm such a huge fan"...don't you think that could mean, "That's why I came to try & help you"? No matter what her public persona vs. her "actual" self is, she doesn't want her to leave.
I love youtube analysis videos and you always do a standup job!
Thank you V Garrett, I really appreciate that!
Omg. When you said you didn't care about your subscriber count, I subscribed.
Now, I feel oddly manipulated.
God I love listening to you break everything down, even to the most intricate tangents. Absolutely obsessed with your content 🥰
I'm glad someone appreciates my tangents haha Thank you Ariana!
It makes sense after watching past episodes where they used cookies to control home automation(White Christmas). But can they really produce that much?
The toy robot was way overkill tho, haha.
It's still entertaining, it's a Black Mirror thing.
The meaning behind the phrase "black mirror" reminds me of the end of Fahrenheit 451 where (spoiler alert) bombs drop on the town and Guy Montag's house and his wife is left staring at her own reflection when the tv screens all finally turn off. Ray Bradbury is another author with a lot of works focused on future technology and the unintended consequences in society.
Another Easter egg the first song played during the talent show is the ending song from uss callister
This is going to sound a lil crazy but what you said at the end is something I really needed to hear. Thank you.
I'm glad I could help!
That's why I stan Miley. Whenever I look at her I don't feel like being her but I feel like learning from her what I mean is that Miley Cyrus is one of the realest artist and I wanna be true also I wanna discover myself and not get blindsided by what others think about me but sadly I put alot of efforts tryna make others like me
I wonder what Catherine's punishment would look like if she was punished with "White Bear" in mind.
A lot of people disliked or even hated this episode for some reason, and as an adult male who isn't into pop music (nor Cyrus), and who wasn't expecting much from the episode, I really liked it a lot. It's not in my top 3, but it might actually make like 5th or somewhere around there?
The best episode of the season (granted it's only 3 episode season IIRC, so not saying much)
That’s why I love the authenticity of Johnny Depp
I really liked this episode,it was dark, yet a good ending finally
And make sure your breadbox is certified people.
This was an amazing analysis
13:07 Preach it Bryce!
Thank you for this super analysis!! Now I see it with much more depth.
Heyyy I watched all of your black mirror review and im so proud of you for being honest and by far this is my favourite videos of yours. Keep going! Love from malaysia ❤️
Ashely Too was a Black Mirror attempt of a family friendly episode
One year later and two things happen that change a bit how we see this episode
Freebritney which already was over there but not that notorious
And Abba voyage which is literally a copy of the young abba members like if they were eternally young
honestly, i didn't like this episode too much when it came out compared to other black mirror episodes. but your analysis is incredible and i didn't think too much about different aspects like the meaning behind the mouse business and a lot of the direct links to miley's own life, despite growing up loving hannah montana lmao so thank you! you helped me see it a new light. your video essays are amazing!
also, just thinking about the parallels between ashley and miley makes me realise how much i feel for miley. i guess i was a part of the people who thought her behaviour was scandalous, considering i was around 13 or 14 when her music changed and then there was the whole robin thicke thing. and yet now, i emphasise with her because ive been a teenager and ive done some rather "scandalous" things myself and i cant imagine having that pressure to be somebody else. she is iconic and i love the parallel of her life in this episode
also 110% agree with your comments on authenticity. one of my favourite philosophers, jean-paul sartre, said that the only way to create meaning in your life was to live authentically and to make unauthentic decisions was "bad faith" and causes you to be unfulfilled, like you mentioned. i love your takes
I was in my 20s when that robin thick scandal came out . I thought Hannah Montana was stupid though she’s lucky she’s become famous off her music because I love it
The people who hate on black mirror episodes just can’t see true meaning
This was the first episode of Black Mirror I watched and I liked it so much that i got hooked to it. Again another episode of a show that was filmed in my country 😂
That's awesome!

Back in 2016 my college class actually used Miley as a how to change your image. I was a theatre major and type casting is a big problem, my professor was a guy in his 60s who loved how she did it.
Anyone notice Jack was Ashley's bass player at the end? Or am I imagining that? Not sure if I heard it in the video.
Great message at the end, best part of the video
How can you mention childhood television and "Goggins", and not mention Postman Pat at all?
I love this episode and the ending
Have to say, I didn't like this episode either, although I got what it was saying. It was too on the nose and meta, with Ashley pretty much being literally how Cyrus saw her life. I never really like when celebrities play themselves (or here, play themselves in all but name). It is navel gazing on a screen and basically saying isn't Cyrus strong and brave for breaking free of her Disney persona! Yeah, maybe she was, but there was an aspect of self back-patting to it that just didn't sit well. All child stars have this problem where they have to shed their child star persona. Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway and others all also did it. Some make it, some don't. Controlling family exploiting kid stars and messing them up is as old as Michael Jackson and the "you don't know the star as a real person" is as old as Elvis. This kind of felt, for the first time, like they really were covering very well trod ground.
Really all of season 5 with only three episodes really felt like a let down and really were not in the same wicked vein as the previous seasons. The first episode really was just a cute "San Janipero" like love story about two dudes this time and the second really also was on the nose about stuff everyone is already well aware of. And I think they have mined all the can from the whole "cookies are people" thing with this episode too, so even the "tech" angle is starting to get repetitive. I think there is a reason this has been with no episodes for a while and this season was only three measly episodes ..the well looks to be going dry for these particular writers.
You sir, do a goddamn good job!!
Thank you, glad you like it!
David Goggins.. that was a nice touch
Thx bruce for such a video. I find my life meaning as well.
I loved the doll so much lol also her changed Avatar at the end
I have been a fan of Miley since 2006. She inspires me everyday. I loved her as Hannah Montana and I love her now.
How are Rachel, Jack, and their father 'dysfunctional?'
Who else thought the plot was headed towards Ashely being replaced by the super fan and that super fan coming to find out how hard it was for Ashely the hard way?
Definitely surprised me how decent of an actor Miley was considering the only other role I ever seen her in was Hannah Montana
Welcome back

Can't help but notice that the younger sister looks like Lindsey Lohan. Not a coincidence.
the irony is that you’re doing what you’re criticizing, skillshare is a shite company and u know it .
This was more a Disney Live Action than Black Mirror.
That's definitely what it was trying to replicate
