I think you had more than 3 bottles of liquids, did I miss something?
Different areas may have different laws- this has not been an issue for me traveling this way in the US/ EU.
I was confused for a long time about The 3-1-1 protocol for the US tsa. It refers to 3oz container of liquid, 1 quart bag, 1 bag. The number of containers is limited only to how many you can fit into that one one quart bag.
