I'm about to take delivery of a really nice 2005 Passat wagon. I didn't even know the B5.5 had "city lights", so this is something I'll have to look for. My goal with this car will be to have one that's as close to new as possible, and having all the lights working is part of that. Thanks for posting this.
Your vid does help! Man, I fought with the bulb on the driver’s side. I thought it was a clockwise or counterclockwise turn! Thanks for showing how it’s done👍🏻
Thanks for this video Mark! I knew how to get access to those lights, but how to pull them out- no clue... Now I got it :-) Tomorrow I'm on it!!! Cheers
Mine wasn't easy to get out. I really had to twist my hand around to get it. I'd be carefully pulling on the wires, though. It could pull them right out. if you could get something like channel locks into the space, that might help. Don't squeeze to hard, though. What I did was just wiggled it a bit until it eventually came out. Wish I could be more help. Good luck.
@@ohgeez9971 thanks for the reply. I figured it would be a rough job. I wish they didn't make it soo hard to maintenance your own vehicle. I know it's for profit
So that's what they are called? I couldn't find a name for that bulb and I needed to replace it. Can you pull it out by pulling on the wires or did you have to grab a part of the housing to do it? That looks fairly easy. So how did you get it back in? Thank you for sharing.
I did pull on the wires, but gently . Putting it back in is a little tricky, but a bit easier than getting it out. You just have to line it up with your fingers. Not much help, but it's hard to explain. You'll figure it out if you haven't already :)
How did you come up with the name city lights? What is their purpose if they are so low intensity? Are they supposed to be like parking lights only used while parked still?
+Ben Curtis Mine aren't very bright either and are a bit yellow. I tried to take a picture of them, but it's really hard to tell in the picture. Sorry I can't be more help. My guess is, yours are normal.
how do you pull it out, by a special instrument or by hand, if by hand how do you reach it or do you pull by the wires, if you pull by the wires(like i did) willl they not break or be damaged(mine are okay but i did it only once) but if you do it like 100 times there is a chance that the wirse will just break and the city light will just stay in there disconnected and dead how will you get it out then? just asking cuz i know il have to do it again and again.
+Nauris Trifonovs (WolfBow) I was able to use my fingers and thumb to pull the it out, although i did put a slight amount of pressure on the wires. Obviously, you have to be pretty careful, so you don't pull the wires out. You might be able to use some pliers to help, but I'd be afraid of breaking the connector. My Passat is a 2002 with just about 200,000 miles on it and I've only had to replace one bulb, once, so far.
I used pliers but it was too difficult to reach i tried for 2 hours so i went to youtube for help, and after pulled it by wires alone mine is 2004 and over 300.000 km and im planning on to hold it for 10 years ^^
I pulled hard asf on my 2003 B5.5 Passat city light and it didn’t budge..What the hell was VW thinking when the put that bulb way up there..fuck sake. The rear coolant flange was easier to change than this bulb.
I was told you had to remove the front bumper to change the bulbs. What a time- saver this post was. Thank you so much.

Many thanks Mark for showing how this is done, it wasn't easy but I wouldn't have had a clue without your video. Much appreciated.
Thank you very much. I couldn't get mine to turn counterclockwise to remove it, and I learned that it just pulls out. Saved me from more frustration.
How the fuck did you get your hand in there to pull that bulb out..Does everyone here have dwarfed hands?
@@TopSecretVid hahahaha its so fuking hard
@@TopSecretVid its a tough job need really small hand and long reach

Mine won't come out. I'm afraid of pulling on the wires too hard. Such a simple task made difficult
Same here. Did you manage to get it out? And if so, please help :)
@@Allusernamestakenomgpull out it by the wire, it won't break.
Thank You so much!

Absolute b*stard to reach to but finally managed to get pliers on it using a mirror to see. Thanks for the video.

I can get to the black bulb connector but can't pull it out to change the bulb. Do I need to use more force??? (2003 VW Passat)

helped a lot thanks
Are the new bulbs in the video the same brightness(lumens) as the same 2825 bulbs used in the interior of the car?
Thanks, helped.
I gaveup, couldnt pull it out
Same here. It's like glued on.
Hi, When I turn on the lights these come but are dim or yellow. Day running lights work fine. Bright's work fine.Should these be bright?
