    What really freaks me out is how some people who live in relatively large houses STILL have to rent storage units away from their houses because they have too much stuff. So they are paying rent for storage and they don't even have easy access to their belongings. I don't understand why they can't realize that they have TOO MUCH stuff???

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 років тому +1

      I have seen that myself. I think it stems from the urge of keeping things and not letting some things go. Always the what if situations people are planning for or the hoarding mentality.
      Rental storage units is a huge drain of finances... I can go on and on about that.

      George Carlin has a great bit about how much we're obsessed with getting more stuff! Having a storage unit was such a huge drain on my finances, and most of the stuff I had in there was hand-me-downs from my parents which I didn't even end up using because I had higher quality goods that my fiancee and I had. Instead of wasting money and space on these goods I learned to let go of them instead, and committed myself to not buying unnecessary stuff that I would just need a storage unit for anyway.

    Love the way you think man. I've offered advice to friends with financial trouble but they just don't want to make a move. Stuck in their ways I guess. I grew up in a cluttered home and didn't even realize how bad it bugged me until I got my first apartment at college. I only bought a few pieces of furniture and it was pure bliss. My life has since gotten cluttered again and it's feeling great to shell a lot of this stuff.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 років тому +5

      I advice is to not offer advice until they see you do well and they ask you for advice. It's too hard to force your own ideals on others.
      Yeah same here, I get more and more clutter and seems like it never goes away! More effort to reduce stuff!

      Right. Then they run into trouble and guess who they want to borrow from. Mr. Penny Wise. This applies at every income level, except the super rich. And even they get into financial trouble. I think Trump has declared bankruptcy (corporate and personal, I believe) a few times. I'm sure he is in vast company. Oh. GM got an hand out from O-bailout. And this year, they're in trouble - again (and laying off tens of thousands of workers).

      You are very right about the borrowing mess. I've cut most of them off. Some even at a loss. I still loan money to friends that pay me back.

    Watches are good for professional settings or even during physical activity. Also I'm not fond of being totally dependent on smartphone since we already stare at screens too often.

    • @SodiumGated
      @SodiumGated 7 років тому +8

      This is another area where BeatTheBush doesn't understand the value of things(i.e a watch). It is not that you can't tell time, but how much more convenient is it if you had a watch. If you are busy with clients and don't have a watch to know when to end a meeting- what a disaster?!

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 років тому +3

      You have a point with physical activity. Although, I tend to get anything on my wrist ripped off my wrist during intense physical activity.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 років тому +4

      I rather not even look at the watch with a client because it's rude and you can see the quick glance.

    • @se7enzee444
      @se7enzee444 7 років тому +4

      Watches are not for looking up the time. They are jewelry, like your necklaces and bracelets.

    • @SodiumGated
      @SodiumGated 7 років тому +7

      If you are with a client, pulling out your cellphone is a lot more rude. If your time is worth money and the clients are paying you for your time, you need to keep things moving. Another example BeatTheBush where a watch is useful is doing Pomedros technique using set count down timer on a cheap casio G-shock @ work. You can justify that you don't need things because you have something else that can do it - but you are missing the value of having something available to do it quicker. E.g I can walk, but I drive. I can write letters, but I use cellphone. What you are missing is that the purpose of tools is to enhance human performance. You can always have inferior substitutes but if a tool can enhance the speed/ease you can do things - it is often worth it. Highly recommend getting a G-Shock basic watch on Black Friday. I can't function without mine.

      Don't visit S. Korea or Japan. They would attack you with lethal force. They turn your refusal to drink into an insult. Somehow it signals trust if you're willing to make an a_ _ of yourself in front of coworkers or friends. I treat myself once a year for my b-day.

      Also, some people are too lazy to carry their water and bottle around or too lazy to clean it. Also, the bottle sometimes has an odor..like a metal bottle has metal smell and changes the flavour of the water. Plastic bottles even worse and collects molds. However, i almost always carry my metal bottle around :D Hate drinking from plastic

    • @justin_oxford
      @justin_oxford 7 років тому +1

      Not too much of an issue if you wash it. But I agree, it's just laziness at that point. As a student I have a backpack 90% of the time so it's pretty easy to carry.

    • @justin_oxford
      @justin_oxford 7 років тому

      True, but there are bottles with portable filters that are also inexpensive (even when you consider the lifespan of the filter). I think a lot of unnecessary costs that people incur come from "convenience fees" or just the cost of buying something instead of planning ahead.

    1) Souvenirs. I love the cheapo ones. Zipper chain, key chain, magnets or post cars. Pictures I can't carry in my pocket easily unless digital.
    2) Watches, only really use them on travel. Sometimes your phone dies. Agree with you there.
    3) Storage containers. Good point on selling unused and unwanted items.
    4) Hand soap. I used to do the foaming machine, but the one with lotions mess it up. I buy Jergens liquid hand soap at Dollar tree for $1.
    5) Alcohol. I drink socially and I don't drink that much.

    Good video and I agree with everything except the watch. A watch for me is useful in four ways: taking a break from the cell phone which has radiation, while working in a setting where taking my phone out is unprofessional, the enhancement of style which helps in business settings and job interviews, checking the time quickly when watching a toddler who is running around.

    • @BeatTheBush

      Sounds like a lot of disagreement with the watch. Another sensitive topic it appears.

      I agree with James here, although i don't do watches :) I hate keeping my cellphone around all the time. It's on airplane mode more than not

    • @MelissaBrownapt215
      @MelissaBrownapt215 6 років тому

      Maybe I wouldn't say "sensitive." It may be a matter of how much people actually rely on their cell phones. I think taking them out in the states, say in a meeting or with friends is interpreted as disengagement with the person you are with, whereas, perhaps in Asia, you can just excuse yourself and walk away. I don't wear watches because I just ask anyone nearby for the time if I see them wearing a watch. I pull my phone out only if I don't spot anyone wearing one. If I thought it would make the difference between getting a deal or not getting one, I guess it'd be worth it. It'd be interesting to find out how many deals are made because someone is wearing a very expensive watch - as has been suggested above - (rather than the terms of the deal).

    • @BeatTheBush

      Why not put less on? I feel like you need a certain amount to wash with though depending on the strength of the liquid.

    • @suhailkapoor

      One needs to maintain the balance, if the liquid is too diluted then one has to wash again to remove grease. But too much of soap means that you need to scrub just to get the soap off. :-)

    @cristianrosu1002 6 років тому

    Hello, BeatTheBush, thanks again for another one of your interesting, useful and inspirational videos. Here is my opinion on the items you talk about here and other items I do not buy.
    Hand watch - I only had one handwatch and that was a gift/incentive received from one of the previous companies I worked for. I do not ever intend to buy a watch, if I want to know what time it is, I look at my laptop or, if I’m travelling, I look at my mobile phone.
    It’s been a long time I gave up throwing money on souvenirs. The solid soap is cheaper and more efficient than the liquid soap. I stopped throwing money on alcohol a very long time ago, I drink alcohol very rarely.
    Other items I do not spend money on:
    Pizza - as I don’t eat meat, and since the vast majority of pizza has meat, I only eat vegetarian pizza, but very rarely because it’s very expensive and it has all sorts of nasty cheese on it.
    Pickels - I eat pickels very rarerly because of these reasons: First of all, their acid ingered in large quantities damages the walls of the stomach, especially if the stomach is empty. Secondly, the jars full of pickels are heavy and dificult to carry from the grocery store, and there also the stress of not breaking the jar while transporting it.
    Ketchup - I do not buy or eat ketchup because it contains lots of sugar and other chemical crap.
    Energy drinks and sodas - pure poison. I do consume drinks based on the mix of coffee, milk and sugar, I know they are not very healthy, but there are a lot of unhealthy types of food I do not consume. Plus, I compensate that with eating vegetables pretty often.

      Storage containers can be typically used if you want to store items like books, board games, documents, clothes and many more of uses. I don't own a dresser so i replace a dresser for a storage container. When it comes to moving i would rather not worrying about taking out dresser drawers to lift the dresser. About the hand soap, i did the research and i learned something new. It does say that you can use only water to get rid of most bacteria while washing your hands.

    on alcohol. when i got married, i thought 75 years sounded like a nice number of years, so i bought 75 bottles on dom perignon, one per anniversary. sadly, we didn't make it that far, so i only open a bottle on major life events. a few years ago, i remodeled the kitchen and found a half gallon jug of jack daniels with a note from the former owner that read "to be drunk when the mortgage is paid off" it was collecting dust since 1959! i doubt it's drinkable, so i stuck another note on the bottle for the next owner of this home. today i went to the class 6 store (on base liquor store) and found out i'd have to special order 3 bottles (minimum order) of dubonnet. i finally finished the bottle from seven years ago and they no longer stock it. i imagine i'll end up leaving two bottles behind when my new house is ready to move into. mr beat the bush, how long did it take to get through that bottle of tequila? that is what type of bottle you are showing?

    Great. I hope you continue the series.
    I do buy the storage containers, though. LOL I'm a teacher and I use them to keep organized so I do thing there are great uses for them. However---I absolute agree that people buy them and store things in them, things they would have been better of getting rid of.
    Maybe you could talk about when to store something and when to get rid of it.
    Watch out for bears!!! LOL

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 років тому

      You need the containers if the things you store are actually used rather than stored and never touched for years. So you can make a good argument to buy each item I list, I only offer why you should not. =D

  • @AnnLaustsen87

    I would say that having a good-quality, well-made watch with neutral colors (goes with every outfit) is a good wardrobe staple to have. I think it's good to wear a watch to a job interview, in important meetings, etc. Checking your watch instead of checking your phone guarantees the people around you that you care about their time, and that you're definitely not checking text messages. I have a nice Victorinox watch with 10-year warranty that I bought from Amazon at a heavy discount relative to MSRP.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 років тому

      I see a timepiece as a relic of the past myself but preference can be very different if you like it. I refrain from checking the phone when with company. You might not realize but glancing at your watch is perceptible even if you do it for a split second and even if you do it when others are distracted. I certainly can tell when others glance at their watch. People only do this when they are not fully immersed in the current conversation.

    Everyone's going to have their indulgences, the things they know they don't need, but it's the one category they splurge anyway. For me it's dining out, beer, gear (to start a UA-cam channel), and art books. At least the last two categories have a practical purpose though- I'll be using the gear to make content and the art books I can make into content and put in Amazon affiliate links to the product plus these things inspire me.
    I do all kinds of other frugal things: I almost NEVER buy new clothes and I cut my own hair.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 років тому

      Agreed. Everyone has their preferences and these are suggestions to not buy. Some stronger than others and sometimes there is a strong reason to buy certain things.
      Storage containers for example, there could be a legitimate need for it. The soap, you might need to buy the first bottle. Watch, you might need it because the activity you do does not allow you to carry a phone and yet you need to know the time.

    And your body needs more and more to get that buzz like any substance. I healed my ex roomie from Korea of being an alcoholic for 20 years, and his health was failing on all levels. He spent 1,000 a month on wine and drinks. After the healing, he has now saved 24,000 in alcohol costs and sold his stash of wines in storage for about 13,000. I agree except for the watches. Having a nice mechanical dress watch is awesome for interviews or any other semi-formal events. Stylish, can also be a status symbol if you want to show you have money. A quality mechanical watch can also last you a life time so if you want to look at it as cost per wear it is usually quite low unless you get the blinged out tourbillon watch that costs 100,000 or something crazy. Something like a two-tone rolex can be picked up used for only a couple grand and will last FOREVER and is appropriate to wear in formal and casual settings.Edit: Also, @beatthebush, what are you doing wearing a digital watch? Are you 10? It is never acceptable for a grown man to be wearing a digital watch unless it is one of those ones for working out and it is only acceptable when he is working out

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 років тому +2

      Ha ha, yeah there appears to be some disagreement with the watch portion. Everybody has their own ideas and having 5 pretty radical ideas in one video is bound to get a few that will not fit with everyone.
      Status symbols is a slipper road as you are 3/4 ways towards trying to keep up with others. So the stylish part doesn't work well for the maximum networth.
      I think this perception of 'digital watch' or what is a preconception molded by advertising. You can call me a kid if you want of course, I have no qualms about it.

    • @MelissaBrownapt215
      @MelissaBrownapt215 6 років тому +1

      Because you're not a business/sales/con man... You don't have to dress to impress. That is the difference here. I assume you don't work with clients and clearly your friends are not people you need or wish to impress with your wealth or success.

      @leonidas14775 5 років тому +1

      Trying to impress the interviewer with a status symbol? Think about what you're getting yourself into. A job where you are expected to keep buying expensive stuff just to keep up.
      If you must, buy a knockoff rolex and if it breaks after the interviews you got your money's worth.

      The word "great" has a broad meaning. Since the gist of the channel is maximizing savings, the idea isn't whether or not products are great, but whether we can live without buying them (or get them free or for less, if we do need them). I can list a lot of great things that are both useful to me or just novelty items. I'll bet BTB can afford a brand new autopilot Mercedes, which is great, but his priorities lie elsewhere.

    Then I guess the one with the unsalesman was the 0th episode :-P
    I agree with everything you said in this video except for the watch. I have two wristwatches, one of them is a tough one that I use during sports like cycling of airsoft. I don't even take a phone with me while airsofting, it's just another thing to loose or break or it gives my position away. The other watch is not as tough but it is practical, it is with me all the time (except when I use the other one) so I don't have to think about where to get the date/time, alarms and a chrono if I need one. Phones are also big, hard to take them out from your pocket or whereever, but you can just glimpse at your clock and you are good to go. Which also means less distractions, because your phone may have some notifications etc.
    I strongly agree with the last one, about the alcohol, in fact I haven't bought a bottle of anything in like a decade or more. As a guy I usually get some alcohol as gift and that's enough for me. The same goes for carbonated sugarwaters. BeatTheBush, maybe you should include them in ep 2. They are also unhealthy. And plain water is the best drink anyway.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 років тому

      I should put that one in a playlist. =D
      You have a point when airsofting. But do they not have a signal to let you know when the session ends? I've been without a watch for eyars.

    • @sogerc1
      @sogerc1 7 років тому

      Yes, they blow a whistle and everything but not only that, sometimes a watch is useful in tactical situations, for ex. if you have to wait 5 minutes then do something (like flank the "enemy"). When your blood is pumping, it's hard to keep track of time.
      When I'm playing I don't feel the time passing, only the exhaustion, but that's not a reliable indicator that I should go home, it's good to have a watch.
      BTW, you probably don't remember, but I asked you some time ago about the extended warranties. And I took your advice, I didn't get it. I searched a lot, and I found a different gun replica model but a similar style (I mean it is also a submachine gun) but this is from a very reputable company. It's only weakness is the air nozzle (which weakness is common among GBBs) but the part is available and I can replace it myself. I saved almost $90 and I ended up with a better product. I hope...

    I have a bunch of alcohol in my house, but most of the time I don't even drink. I guess I have it so that it'll be there if I want it. I'm kind of a reverse alcoholic. I'll feel like having a certain kind of drink, then I'll buy it, and then after 1-2 drinks I might not touch the bottle for a couple of months.
    I guess I buy it because drinks at a restaurant or bar are much more expensive per unit. It feels like more of a deal when you can get a ton of it for a relatively small price... but then you have it for a couple of years at a slow consumption rate.

    And the souvenirs are usually made somewhere else and not from the actual place...why would you buy something plastic that has 0 value

      You have a point. Probably because it has the pictures and says the name of the place on it? Lol. If you're gonna buy, buy locally made right? =D

    On your dead bed, you will have lots of regrets. 'I should have done that and this'

      'You will have...' is a form of wishing others unwell. If you do that too much, your soul will turn black.

      Ross- Tuesdays 10% discount; Movie tickets senior price you save a bit; + gym memberships sometimes over 55 is considered senior (depending where you are). But not buying anything you save even more...
      I wouldn't be afraid to ask right before I make purchases, like I would always ask the front desk of my local petshop if there are coupons or deals going on for the specific food item I'm buying for my dog. So don't be afraid to ask, "so are there senior discounts here?". I mean unless you're afraid of people knowing your age.... I always ask if there are senior discount on all the museums, temples, and theme parks on trips even abroad.
      I'm not a senior either, but I look out for my parents & grannie all the time ;)
