  • Radio Peking, it was founded on December 3 of 1941. It is now known as China Radio International.
An interval signal, or tuning signal, is a characteristic sound or musical phrase used in international broadcasting and by some domestic broadcasters, played before commencement or during breaks in transmission, but most commonly between programmes in different languages. It serves several purposes:
It assists a listener to tune his or her radio to the correct frequency of the station. This is because most older and cheaper radio receivers do not have digital frequency readout.
It informs other stations that the frequency is in use.
It serves as a station identifier even if the language used in the subsequent broadcast is not one the listener understands.

For some reason I find 'The East is Red' played on chimes at the beginning almost unbearably beautiful and heart-wrenching. And to think that little melody was being broadcast into the emptiness of space by China's first satellite. It gives one a sensation of exquisite, poignant loneliness...

Shortwave radio does not broadcast by satellite, its transmitters bounce signals off of the ionosphere which allows signals to travel thousands of miles across the globe. I used to listen to Radio Peking in the early hours of the morning many years ago. This interval signal is called The East is Red. 🌄🇨🇳

That Radio Peking interval signal is still played before interval signal of local CNR transmissions and even some CRI transmissions up to this day.

North Korea's international station uses almost exactly the same format for it's interval signal and sign-on. Different melody, of course but nevertheless...

This radio station sounds really creepy along with the number stations, and jammers. I bet there was so many radio stations to listen to on SW back in the year 1980.
