The majority of our customers leave the printer on all the time. It will go to sleep and then wake up to print jobs, versus the hassle of having to go to the printer to turn it on every time they want to print.
In this video, the TM-305 is being configured for 36" roll paper. That is the largest roll that the TM-305 can load. We typically run it on 500' rolls.
For cut sheets, push the grey tension lever on the right back, roll the roll back out of the machine. Close the roll cover over the roll, pull the grey tension lever forward. Then on the display, tap "replace paper" then tap "load cut sheet" place your cut sheets over the roll cover and use the size guide to keep the stack organized.

Your display doesn't light up? Have you tried disconnecting the power cable (either at the printer or the wall) and leaving it powered down (5-10 minutes will usually clear any non-persistent error) and then plugging back in?

We have run paper of 40, 45, and 46 lb bond weight (which are all 150+ GSM) through the Canon TM-305, TX-4000 and TZ-30000. Are you asking about running thicker, or thinner paper?

There are Canon options for flat/hard media. This printer is intended to have the majority of it's prints run off rolled media.
