  • This time we’re hurtling through the layers of technology that make a graphics tablet (pen tablet) work, from operating systems politics to electromagnetic induction. I'll be looking closely at two tablets, the Wacom Intuos Pro and Huion H610PRO, and going into a full teardown on the Huion.

I searched for how a graphics tablet works, scrolled through all the review videos and found this which looked like an actual explanation video of the working. Got to say this is the most satisfactory video I watched. The information density in 30 minutes is huge. Definitely subscribed.

This was awesome. I couldn't understand how my device pen without batteries worked nor how to the technology detect position and angle of pen. Now I have have a greater appreciation of not just the technology behind this device but also how it ties in with USB, mices and other peripheral devices. This genuinely surprise me both how simple yet how brilliant the designs were. Thank you. Even as 40+ year old I learn something new. It gives me ideas of down things to create

Actually I do not know why UA-cam gave me this video. It has been a wonderful gift. Even though the technology for these devices has advanced some in the past six years, it is still quite relevant. I am an artist who uses drawing tablets and pen displays and for me it is very awesome to have someone explain how these devices run in a way I can understand. I know the intended audience was more tech-savvy, but as an artist, getting to know and understand the tools and materials used is very important. Thank you very much for this video!

Holy hot diggity dog, this video is amazing! It's like a one-stop-shop to learn about drawing tablets, and answers literally every single question I had, plus more. And I'm really glad you went though HW and SW because I was wondering what the heck kind of magic it used to scan everything. Instant sub.
By the way, I think newer Huion tablets (like the one that got me to look up this video) have adopted Wacom's wireless charging technique. My pen doesn't need to charge and it's so light I thought it was hollow plastic.

Excellent video. That sort of explains some of the driver problems using various mice, touchpads and other HIDs on my old Thinkpads with everything seeming to fight and none of it working properly. As of March 2020, Huion Display Tablets have surpassed Wacom for featues and are relatively dirt cheap. And even cheaper if you want an older model. I will have to try looking at some of the signals with my scope. These tablets are tempting but I still prefer my Polychromos pencils and paper.

Huion/UC Logic is such a simple design. I can't imagine the prior Aiptek/Waltop tablets to have been neither simpler nor more complicated, however those worked absolutely horribly, particularly the larger sized ones, very susceptible to ambient RFI. Perhaps it's the shielding that makes some of the difference, as the edges on Waltop were unstable in particular.
And thanks, this is SUCH an awesome video.

Hey! That was a really cool video. Could you go into the Wacom tablet a bit more, perhaps purchasing an older model for analysis? I believe they have a patent on sensing the pen while inductively powering it which is why no other manufacturer offers batteryless pens. I'm curious to see how this technology affects the hardware design.

I'm glad I jumped to your video after reading about your tablet teardown in MAKE. The MAKE article doesn't do your work justice. You can't put all that detail in a two-page spread. I also had some questions that got answered in the video (for example, I didn't understand the coils in the tablet PC from the article). Please keep up the great work and keep sharing. One question, did you spill something on your o-scope? Why does your cat lick it? ; )

20:30 This... this is the advice that should have been given to me long time ago. When i was just diving into the hardware world I always assumed that i was just missing something, that there is some underlying secret meaning behind some magick, that there is no way this hacky way made its way into the final product, it's probably that i just missinterpreted the spec! Or there is something wrong with my tooling... Yeaaah.... It took me quite a couple of attempts of reverse engineering to accept the fact that hacky solutions exist and are quite common in the embedded world.

My goddess, your videos on Huion h610 are very helpful. it's kinda hard to measure pen parameters with my dodgy analog scope or logic analyzer. I was interested is it possible to emulate eraser pen if h610 does not have one or add buttons or axis to existing pen. Huion driver shows that there is stylus, puck, and eraser(in GIMP). I has hope for they are on different carrier(and ordered spare pen for experiments).
But i guess driver is crap and there no extra functionality possible. Can you share schematic for huion pen? Or hi-res photos of pcb? 2 years pass, but Really appreciate if you do.
