If you’ve ever been in love, and I mean really in love, just close your eyes and think of those moments while the music is playing. This is one of the finest und underrated melodies of the 20th century, in my opinion.
Otto, I fully agree. One of the finest melodies of the 20th century. A masterpiece so beautiful, so exquisite .. that takes you somewhere you didn't know existed .. the rarest flower ...
What I find most amazing about this song (writting by John) is the beautiful key change after the intro. Lennon was the first to admit that he was not a great musician but what an ear he had.
It is a gag. "His friends call him Hank. Ready Henry?" "Ready John." Probably written by comedy writers. Very Jack Benny-ish. I would rather he called him Hank. They should be friends.
greenspringvalley I mean it probably wasn’t, he mentioned that his name was Henry before and after saying his friends call him Hank, I feel like he mixed John and Paul up
Cool that. Young guys who compose "songs" at the highest level, and a harmonic genius who can recognize a great tune and re-work it into an improvisational peice. Hats off to Henry, Hank, John, and Paul, wherever they are.
genius like henry mancini won't ever be fully appreciated by the mass. The more I study music composition, the more of his genius reveals itself to me. He put chords into the same song that beattles wouldn't even dream of doing if they had been given another lifetime to figure out.
You got it backwards Lennion McCartney wrote songs that Mancini could not write in a lifetime. Mancini gives a tepid version here, he is definitely no Jazz Pianist, just a composer .
so cool to see the Beatles talking with Henry Mancini. Such a beautiful song, and it was so cool to see the camera showing his hands playing the piano. Classic video!
I think we forget that along with being a great composer and arranger, Henry Mancini was a fine pianist. The song he played here proves that beyond all doubt. Beautiful.
@rabidgoldfish65 he did. it was a joke. Paul says, "known by his friends as Hank....ready Henry?" (implying that they are not friends) so Mancini replies with "ready john!" (implying that he doesnt even know his name) they were toying with each other for a laugh
@@frankburns8946 Yes, you are so right. John Lennon wrote the song. "Hank" looked through the Beatles' catalog, and chose this John Lennon song. Hence Paul's introduction. Henry is no friend of his. LOL! They were clever lads! Don't take Paul too seriously, however. Paul was probably just joking around. I believe Paul when he says the song was John's but he contributed. For it to be such a beautiful love song without any sarcasm, and for it to be so sweet sounds a lot more like Paul than John. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/If_I_Fell for more background :) Or maybe I am wrong to typecast John in that manner. I don't know. I do know, however, that I appreciate all the Beatles. I am in my mid-60s, so I remember all this stuff because it happened during my formative years. It was roughly half a century ago that the Beatles broke up. I believe John Lennon said he wrote that song, and it was his first attempt at a ballad. Lennon & McCartney were like that. You could not keep score between the two by looking at the 45 rpm record's label and seeing who wrote it. It was all "Lennon-McCartney." According to a 1990 article in the Chicago Tribune, Lennon wrote 61 songs credited to ''Lennon-McCartney'' entirely by himself, and McCartney composed 43 on his own. All told, Lennon had a hand in composing 84.55 of the 209 songs recorded by the Beatles, and McCartney 73.65. George Harrison was a distant third, with 22.15 credits, and Ringo Starr fourth with 2.7. But such statistics are like asking a computer to write a great song. Attempts by computers that I have heard so far may be "perfect music", but they sound mechanical, and thus eventually boring. Henry Mancini brings out feelings and emotions in his marvelous rendition. No numerical statistical approach can factor that in. In fact, one of my favorite Beatles songs of all time is "Here Comes the Sun" written by George Harrison. It is so positive and upbeat. The numerical approach above would make you think he was "not so good." For me, the Beatles hold a special place in my heart and I love all of them.
Simon Ross : Why is it Paul always gets credit for the Beatles' more 'musical' songs, when it was actually John who wrote most of their evergreens, including this one?
This is definitely a 80% John song But Paul sang lead vocal and John did an amazing lower harmony probably one of the best he ever did. Paul returned the favor by having John sing lead vocal on every little thing
Never heard this before. Its pretty awesome!!!! Henry Mancini was such a great talent. He put his version on the song but what amazes me is how absolutely recognizable the melody is. Just lovely. A tribute to Mancini as an arranger and player and also to the song writing of Lennon McCartney. Its really hard to imagine any other group getting this reception and the musical acknowledgement.
Amazing!!! Henry Mancini and Paul and John together!! and one of my favorite songs, how I wish I had this on film, really beautiful, thank you so much for finding this!
'Twas a joke, the Beatles were always messing with people...one of the things that made them awesome :) This piano version is gorgeous; so poignant and classic
This is the best cover of the best love song in the world - no song is more beautiful than "If I Fell". I've been The Beatles fan since early childhood and this song reminds me of the past, I wish it was possible to download Henry Mancini's version. Does anyone have a link?
He plays a beautiful arrangement. I like how he keeps the Fdim in between F#m and Em7, a lot of people don't play it nowadays, but the Beatles used diminished chords a lot to transition between 2 more primary chords quite a bit.
He, he, kids today and their crazy talk, eh? Yes, the original poster was saying Mancini's the bomb, cool, with it, hep, far out, whatever era's term you can relate to :-) Either way, I agree and thanks for the great upload!
Absolutely. It sounds like something Debussy would have written when played this way, maybe the B side to "The Girl With the Flaxen Hair", if they'd had 45s back then. Feel like John, especially, listened to some Debussy in his off time.
I like how he captures the giddiness of the original song, not just that jazzy transition chord, but all the chromatic stuff the boys threw in the arrangement. Notice he starts off with a grand, chromatic gesture himself!
John’s melody (and the intro) is masterpiece, really. I’m surprised. I didn’t know there is a home demo of this magical “If I fell”…it’s intimate but very interesting. This song has such a beautiful melody that the demo sounds no less impressive than the official version and this one.
You're right. The charm and elegance of the old times has long since faded and turned for the worst. The most lamentable trait of modern times is the horrible pop music, or at least in my opinion. It's all been commercialized.
I think ? The video of this whole BBC show is on UA-cam, but don't know the title of it. I saw it on here about 5-6 years ago. Cilla Black and others cover their songs.
On the recent 2023 Red Album release they did not include IF I FELL -- one of the most beautiful two part vocal harmonies ever recorded - John and Paul's voices blend perfectly there
@jorodd Certainly John wasn't a trained musician, he was an artistic genius ..... and YES i always wondered how John came up with those chromatic chords in the beginning of If I fell ...that was so clever and beautiful ...played by Mancini, who was a melody craftsman too, you see how the song would have been arranged if written by a studied musician with that sophisticated harmony....and guess what ....I like better the way John did it.
I wish we knew more about John's private reaction to this. He must've been really moved. People gave him such a hard time for not being as technically minded as Paul. But if his songs are good enough for Henry Mancini, I guess the discussion is settled, no? 😊
@ssparrow331 that's wonderful - you're lucky to have a piano. I never took lessons but could play a bit by ear on my parent's piano growing up. I haven't taken time to play a piano in 20 years ~ maybe I'll take lessons sometime, too and learn to play this : )

Yes, he did many times. Melodies just dropped off of his fingertips.

Lennion McCartney wrote songs that Mancini could not write in a lifetime.

so cool to see the Beatles talking with Henry Mancini. Such a beautiful song, and it was so cool to see the camera showing his hands playing the piano. Classic video!
Mancini was 6'1" tall and had large hands, but his touch on the keyboard was so light! Listen to "It's Easy To Say." Wonderfully played...
I think we forget that along with being a great composer and arranger, Henry Mancini was a fine pianist. The song he played here proves that beyond all doubt. Beautiful.
The Beatles and Henry Mancini, two music genius.
It's like Gershwin and Debussy fanboying thru Mancini's adorableness and classy fingers.
This makes me goofily happy... :)

Un Gran Musico Henry Mancini tocando bella melodia de los Beatles , es una caricia para los oidos y alegria para el alma.
that is an excellent cover , the beauty and the of the melody and harmony still there and Henrry arranged little parts to make him his song
wow!So beautiful!
That brought tears to my eyes!
Holy.. and I thought this song can't get any more perfect
Amazing!!! Henry Mancini and Paul and John together!! and one of my favorite songs, how I wish I had this on film, really beautiful, thank you so much for finding this!
That Mancini guy is pretty good! He keeps the feeling right in the pocket yet invents a whole other improve vibe.
Good enough to win 4 Oscars and 20 Grammys! My hero. 😊
Just Beautiful. Thanks for sharing with us.
Now; can the new generation ever boast of such greats coming together? Our years are timeless.... classic.... soulful!
Beautiful
My god, this music is marvelous, as Lennon & McCartney and Mancini are. This can not be repeat by someone!
He was a talent, his music never ages.
Amazing, marvellous tune!
Wow, that is beautiful.
Composing a song is a world unto its own.
I LOL, when Henry said he pick a song from their "Vast Catalouge", who knew 5 years later that "vast catalouge" will be over 200 songs...
absolutely wonderful! I wish I knew how to clean-up the background hiss from this otherwise brilliant rendition of this beautiful tune.
Henry, what a touch, instinct, sense....gorgeous
