You have a beautiful 66 White Cooper S MK1 i also like your MK3 S and you panel van. I am really amaze of how your positive attitude since your handicap and does not let you get in the way i salute you. I am also a big Mini Cooper fan and just want to share my 65 Cooper S MK1 LHD North America California from new. GLW the minis
2 things, my uncle had his legs amputated in late 60s, ( drink driver crashed into him between a lamppost). He was around 25, had false legs then made of mainly tin I think 🤔. Anyway he had adapted cars too, I used to caddy for him on golf courses when I was in my teens, you would never know he had lost his legs, going round, fantastic. Your mini’s are fantastic, also my first car was a mini in mid 1980s happy days. Great post 👍🏻😎

What a great system - there doesn’t appear to be any operational delay anywhere. I must have missed how the signal is actually transmitted from the gear knob. It is so nice to see the 1966 Cooper S with the ‘correct’ wheels. Your cars do look excellent. Thanks.

Hi very interesting takes me back 50yrs when my father-in-law a polio victim drove a manual with hand controls back then he had the throttle & clutch levers on the right of the steering wheel and the brake was a lever on the left of the drivers seat.The clutch was vacuum operated and had a large operating cylinder under the bonnet so back then a mini was not able to be converted.

And like you say without it you can actually use them . That’s a fantastic mini to mate makes me smile watching you drive goes really well .👍

An amazing system and it seems to work really well! The gear changes are a lot smoother than mine.
I never thought about the clutch. Such a great system.
It's great that we all feel we know you well enough to ask, and it's even better that you hopefully have spread the word.that this is possible and it will enable others to get access to manual cars.
In other news, I just got some brand new in box (old stock) cosmic aluminium wheel spats for my '72 mini 1000.
I thought you may be interested as they are from the 60's and 70's and are really rare.

Nice cars. I drive Alfa Romeo 1300 GTj 1968 and Fiat 126p 1999, both manual. And I have full 3-way mechanical hand controls and i change gear as usual.
Brilliant Alex. The DVLA have allowed me to use a manual on the licence renewal this time but, hand on heart, my automatic CR-V is so easy to drive I am seriously thinking about changing the mini to automatic. Having just spend over £4K on the engine and gearbox it would cost me that again for an automatic. Kieth says that the engine oil drilling’s are different so I can’t just get an auto gearbox. The cost will probably be similar I guess but, my daughter and sons would still be able to drive manually if I copy your setup. The only fly in the ointment is that I have probably spent more than it is worth so, it may be a case of spending the kids inheritance which I am not entirely happy about. A bit worried what you said about Minispares parts and I might not watch that instalment!
Automatic engines are not that expensive. I know of one coming up for sale soon. Only issue is you would need to change your front subframe to have an auto engine in it. With regards to minispares I just want to make people aware new is not always the best!

Great video on this topic, really interesting, I had expected it to be all hand controls like they used to be. Some impressive engineering to make the ECU do a really good job of the clutch, not too hard to get used to by the looks of it.

Great video Alex, ingenious kit you have. Just a side note, with a 3 speed syncho gearbox, if you want to stop that 1st gear crunch, once the clutch is pressed shift into 2nd gear while the clutch pedal is still down and then into 1st gear You will find it won't crunch.

Back in the day you just got two cream coloured paddles and not much else, umm a bit basic to say the least! That was really interesting stuff. A comprehensive explanation. When you have talked about it previously I have had so many questions although I am quite technically minded this really did make it all clear. I was also thinking that you have made a good contribution to the development of this kit so do take some credit for that. (Hope that didn't sound patronising !). Thanks Alex I will be looking forward to the rolling road video coming soon. 👍

Cracking bit of kit that, and a great explanation of how it works. It may seem expensive to some but you can't put a price on making life more accessible; I'm sure most of us spend more each year on things we don't really need.

@@classicminidetails8887 🤣 I imagine you can mate, I'm more a buyer than a seller, they come at me with their hard sell and I just tell them to sod off, if I need "you" I'll come and get you. I've had many a car salesman on the ropes for people because I dictate how it goes not them, I want the log book and the service history before I want the keys lol.

As soon as I saw this, I thought of my mini that I just picked up today.
Very interesting video Alex. Funnily, I always start my manual cars with the clutch dipped. Conventional wisdom back in the day was that it would reduce the load on the starter and battery. Clutch release bearings rarely fail.
I think normal cars are OK I can't remember the exact reason it's bad on minis. I'll try come back to it in another video
My wife's A3 won't start unless the clutch is dipped so Audi obviously prefer this method. It's a much younger car than the Mini though so perhaps not comparable technology.
My Hyundai i10 relies on the clutch pedal being depressed to start.
I'm not familiar with mini's, but the Minor had a graphite disk as release bearing, so you didn't want to have the clutch depressed any more than strictly necessary
@@erik_dk842 - I doubt that engine starting constitutes a very big proportion of clutch depressed time and the average RPM during that phase will be lower than when the engine is fully running. Whatever it’s construction I doubt that it could be hurt any more than one single gear change when moving.

Straight cut gearbox and zero sound deadening on the mk I sounding top mate
She sounds good right! No intention on putting sound proofing in the cab. I may do the bulkhead for a more factory look in the future
@@classicminidetails8887 unless you start doing motorway miles leave as is I say 😂 mini's are experience cars after all, sound's part of the charm. Love the transition from the transmission noise to the nice exhaust notes as it climbs up the revs
It's done some milage this car now mate and it's actually great on the motorway, it drones like mad at 55 but if you get upto about 75 it's really nice at 4.5k

I was intrigued about Alex so had a quick Google and learnt he had a nasty wipe out on his mountain bike.
I always liked Mini's. When I was a young guy in the late 80's I had few Innocenti Export 1300's that found their way to the U.K. My first cost me 250 quid with its ends knocking aged 18 in '88! Whilst their motor was not as "punchy" as a U.K. "S" (Innocenti used the Austin 1300GT motor which didn't have the EN40B crank/better rods/9 stud head but was still a great lump) but was a far superior machine IMPHO overall. The dash is fantastic! They still are great value compared to a UK S and very stylish! Plus you can RHD them in a morning!
I also was into VW Bugs as "cal look" was a big thing late 80s. As was going the Pod for various meets. My natural progression when I got a few quid was the air cooled 911 which was very cheap (compared to today) mid 90's when i was 25.
I also liked Alfa's and had some weird and wonderful machines that are now worth fortunes!
I salute you Alex for working on these machines with a chair. Takes much determination I fear to get involved in jobs that are tricky. There are plenty of jobs on an S that are tricky what with the twin carbs and booster in the bay. I'm wondering if he's ever changed a clutch or brake master with that bastad of a cotter pin and split pin in the bulkhead member!! That has to be one of the most annoying Mini jobs!! Last time I did that was on a Mk2 Moke that had its pedal shaft seized causing the clutch pedal to stick. UK 60's Moke's are superb!
FYI the Mk1 and Mk2 Moke are excellent machines and great fun! I think you should get one Alex and fit a 1275S drive chain. A great way to kill yourself!

Very interesting, do you ever worry about using so much technology, I suppose that its not any different than a modern car though. Although you hinted that the system can be turned off you didn't go into much detail. Is it still possible to use those converted cars "normally"? Way back in the 1950s and 60s in winter it was normal practice to start cars with the clutch pedal down to reduce strain on the starter by cutting out the drag of the gearbox and consequently the engine spun quicker. Keep the videos coming.
If I was daily driving them I probably would think about an automatic more. They have been great so far now I have ironed out the niggle with the speed sensor. Time will tell how good they are!

When you're driving, does the hand control to the right of the steering wheel operate your brake and accelerator, as in you pull for acceleration and push for braking? Great stuff 😊

How does it/you do an emergency stop. if your braking the hand control and need to turn with left hand does it automatically disengage the clutch due to vehicle speed dropping slowing like an anti stall?
Yes mate it will automatically dip when the cars road speed drops

How do you get in though? Such a narrow space and I thought in the older models the seats don't slide back but I may be wrong there
There is more room in these than most modern cars mate, I do have the seats set at the furthest point back

This is absolutely genius that device you’ve got fitted to the gearlever now here’s a question for you. I can only drive automatics but I’ve always wanted a classic mini especially the cooper And although I have owned automatic minis in the past they’ve never been Coopers. Do you think this device would be suitable for someone like me who is able bodied but wants to cut corners have a manual Cooper with this device that’s handoperated.
