There is a city in Hiroshima called Hatsukaichi where the traditional market opens on every 20th day of the month while the city Yokkaichi in Mie opens on the 4th, 14th and the 24th day of the month.
WAIT WHAT?! I used to live in Mie (close to Ise, I know Yokkaichi is A LOT closer to Nagoya) But I didnt know they opened a traditional market on certain days! Dang, what a missed opportunity!

3:40 there's some real swag to earlier samurai that was lost after the 1400s, 950-1300ad is easily my favourite era for their town and battle time kit and hair styles.
Japanese villagers living in isolation and being self-sufficient *is* rather implausible. Even during the age of the HunTer Gatherers, their life style limiting the family/clan group, this didn't mean they wouldn't meet on 'yearmarkets' once or twice a year. The various small groups of hunter gatherers could trade stuff from local non-hunter gatherers and they could improve their genepool by marrying new blood they met on these yearmarkets. That's not my own invention though, I saw the concept in the movie "The Clan of the Cavebear." The audience often get the wrong idea because when we watch a movie about hunter gatherers, they're always out hunting and gathering. But who's to say that's all they did month after month, season after season? A rather big misconception thanks to the movies is that British frontsoldiers would spent months in their trenches. Not true. German frontsoldiers did live permanently in their trenches but then they had underground shelters, lodgings, kitchens, etc. British frontsoldiers were only moved to the front in anticipation of an attack, be it from their side or the other. So they would only remain in those trenches one or two weeks I guess. British trenches did not have permanent shelters, only for the commanding officers... So unless the British wanted a mutiny every month or so, high command would make sure that not the same soldiers would have to stay in the trenches for any prolonged period of time.
Why am I watching these videos and being insulted with my shameful secrets 😂. Maybe I'm just a pathetic being who deserves this lols. Thank you master 😁
If there was trade and craftsmanship why were there only two cities. Henen and Kamakura? Trade and craftsmanship makes villages grow until they become cities. How could it be that you needed a super important man to found a city around his palace?

Honestly this channel is amazing. Like an Asian Historia Civilis. The topic itself it's interesting, but the guy has some really good story telling skills and art and can turn a ordinary topic into something incredible. Seriously he's so gifted! Also it's nice to see a realistic lessons on Japan rather than people in the west insisting it's perfect and never did anything wrong. I wish he would make like an 80 hour podcast like Mike Duncan's History of Rome, about Japan. That way we could see every Dynasty and Technological wave in Japan from its early starting history to its modern day or something.
There are several podcasts about Japan like the Samurai Archives or the History of Japan, but for a narrative history like the History of Rome check out A history of Japan. Linfamy actually also has his own History of Japan videos but I think he stopped in the Kamakura period.
Loved your video, the epic conclusion to an intriguing series! So I’m short, coins in Japan were like Rainbow Loom bands in my school. They diffused into the general population not because of a central policy but because a few cool kids(merchants) started using them and it was a way for people to connect socially and economically(people actually started selling bracelets in my school). 🤣🤣🤣
Luck was on my side today. I didn't laugh and drink at the same time. Somehow. Brocade: fabric woven with a raised pattern usually in gold or silver thread. So, not for the peasants...
Speaking of merchants, there's a bunch of them in town for our annual mushroom festival this weekend. I plan to meet up with a noguchi San this afternoon to learn mushroom hunting. A town needs commerce or it becomes stagnant and thieves of many kinds sprout up
