- VERY disappointed in this product. I own two other models of Suncast hose reels that have held up for years and work as expected. This model does not work well at all. The reel will not operate properly with a medium hose or a contractor-style hose. Flimsy and flips while reeling. I do NOT recommend this product. Far too expensive and ineffective. People do realize that the guide is meant to be held and moved manually right. This is not an automatic guide like many out there hence the cheaper price. Not sure if I missed something but of course the thing is going to suck if you just crank it without guiding it lol
Right? Science
Just a thank you for showing us how to hook up the hose hideaway. I couldn't understand the instructions at all. I had NO idea which was the "lead" hose. I was so frustrated. Figured I'd find something on UA-cam and I did!
Glad it helped! I am a novice DIY figuring out what I can. 🤔 🤣 This hose holder works better with the smaller hose that I have in it now.
Thank you for your instructions. Mi couldn’t understand the instructions either, but with you,mi got it done in less than 5 minutes. And…I have a 2 fifty foot flexible nylon hoses….it took me 1 minute to wind it up! I did it! Yeah! Thank you…you’re a great instructor!
Thank you!!!
This was one of the hardest videos to watch in a long time...haha...I almost had an anxiety attack with all that fidgeting around to connect the hoses and just everything going wrong at the same time..from hose being twisted while reeling, to the box moving around like crazy, to the leaking connections...I wanted to throw that box 100 feet through my phone!! Seemed like WAY TO much work and effort. I feel for you! Just a friendly word of advice...please make sure to have the water pipe anchored better (the one coming out of your house )... I see how loose it is and especially that you don't hold it while attaching/detaching hoses from it....you WILL end up breaking/cracking spout or even more so the actual pipe behind the wall and cause MAJOR issues... PLEASE make sure to take care of that..it can be a very simple fix and save major headaches if/when it does become an issue. Thx for the review.. Definitely made my mind up for me to not get these terrible hose boxes.. none of them work great without issues. Even the good ones..
Thank you for the giggles! Yes, this hose holder was such a disappointment. My other two Suncasts were so easy to set up and use. Dummy Me thought all models would be as good.
You are right on that exterior water pipe needing anchoring. That occurred to me while filming an upcoming video on dual hose connectors. Hope you have a great evening!
😂😂😂😂 I feel you. I was like damn I gotta do all of that? I'm just going to leave the hose outside. 😂😂😂😂 Thank you for the giggles. Cause I was really overthinking it. 😂😂😂
Drew G thank you for the tips. I'm going to attempt this when the sun comes up 🙂
@@KimTownsel Hi Kim. I know this about am yr old but I looked at the one that resembles my Suncast. Looking intently as you struggled to wind up the hose, I thought how can I help this wee Lass. So, There should be a space at the front bottom for your foot to hold it still. 2) Looking at the hose hole I noticed the thick handle. So your left hand is free, hold that knob as you wind move it to the right. 3) Wind the Male parts with Teflon white tape about 4-5 rotations in the same direction you tighten hose connection. Lengthy I know but I might help you and all your followers. xo
Thanks, John! My other two SunCasts have been so easy to use. This one is not.
The guide on that hose box is manual. Meaning, you have to move it around with one hand while reeling with the other hand to manually guide the hose. The other boxes you showed were automatic, meaning they had the guide automatically move with the turn of the handle. That's why they try to charge extra for the automatic one.
I believe you are correct. Many thanks for well stating the issue.
I was going to mention the same 😂
Nice video. I started to purchase that one before seeing the video. Luckily I went with a different model. Wasn't necessarily looking for a hideaway, just looking for something to help wind up the hose. This video will help me with future purchases. Thanks
Glad I could help!
I’ve often wondered why I see so many of them in the garbage! More trouble than they’re worth!
if you hold it down with your foot on that the reel has on the bottom slot it would make it easier for you.
Tanks for you iinformation , it will help to select the proper one for my needs ... good job. keep the good work
Happy to help!
Hi. I have one of the old ones, over 6 years, no problem with it. I repainted the same color, and looks new again.
We bought this exact model. I have had several Suncast hose storage units so I am used to how the reel works. My issue is with the metal piece on the storage box that the Suncast connector hose screws into. The metal screw piece on the hose connector piece literally sheared cleanly off when I turned the box around so the hose would rool off in the direction of or fish pond. This was the third time I used the hose. Piece of junk and WAY overpriced.
Agreed. This model is nothing like my two order Suncast hose holders, which are great.
Kim I have the same new hose hide away as you. You are supposed to slide the bar back and forth to evenly distribute the hose. It doesn't have the threads for the bar to go back and forth like your other ones you have. It is a pain but it works if you do it that way.
Thank you for the tip!
How many people do you need to operate this. It is a very bad device. I agree with the video author.
@@elenara.9999 it's supposed to work as advertised. But fails miserably.
Question: Why do you keep buying the same, low quality brand? There are other brands that are far superior than this junk. Thanks for the content.
Please let me know which brands to buy. This Suncasr was a disappointment. My first two are still working great.
I know this is old but I think it has to do with the sprayer you had on initially. Once I took the sprayer off it didnt leak. It must put too much pressure on the cheap plastic connection. Thank you for your video
Thanks for the tip!
Why would anyone need instructions for this? Also, 4:22 is hilarious and I may have laughed way too hard. "Oh Lovely". 😂😂😂😂😂
Never had a hose reel that I liked Kim. Merry Christmas Kim.
Merry Christmas, Jamey!
@@KimTownsel Thank you Kim. Hopefully 2020 is going away and 2021 will be much better and I can actually run into you at DQ and chat face to face sometime.
Merry Christmas Kim,
I hope there's lot's more too come.
Kindest Regards, Baz (uk)
Thank you! Starting yard work again, LOL.
The same problem here. It is a stupid device! You have to hold the lid, you have to guide it and you have to turn the handle. How many people you need to do that???? Returning.
Exactly!!! TY!
Much easier to wind if you can find a way to secure the box with anchors
I believe that is the key.
Yes fabian yes
My box came with two anchors.
Thank you for the informative video. 👍 Because this was beginning to become a science project for me, prior to watching this. Thanks for the honesty. I have the suncast model too. Hugs ❤️
My pleasure. Thank you for watching and leaving a positive comment.
Question, how is it working for you now that you had it over a year?
Still the same. I removed the large contractors' hose and put a regular hose in. That works easier, but I still have to manually manipulate it with one hand, "crank" it with the other hand, and stabilize the crate with my feet.
How did you get it to work? I have been trying for the past half an hour and can’t seem to get it stop leaking….😢…. Any expert suggestions?
I really never did. Hate this model. Too awkward to set up and use. I'm not an expert but there are plenty of comments that may be helpful about the winding... not so much on the leaking. 😞
Thank you Dr. Townsel! Appreciate the insight.
The small one. The struggle is real.
Hello Dr. Kim!!!!! Long time no see. I was looking for this product and here you are! So is this the one you recommend? Suncast SMT205WJ8 Mocha Wicker Hose Reel
That is the one I reviewed but it is not as good as my older one.

Is there a good one u recommend? I think the problem with the first hose was it’s a 3/4 and from looking around they usually only support 5/8ths. But I’m new with this and can be completely wrong.
I think you are exactly correct. I have two older versions of the Suncast Hideaway that have been fabulous and are still in use. This one had too many subpar features. I will look for a better version of the Suncast hose holder this year instead. Also, I am trying a smaller diameter hose on this one.
This was most helpful thank you.
My pleasure!
Thread Seal tape will fix the leaking problem
It didn’t for me
Edit: I may have used the plumbers tape that came with a shower head , that prob wouldn’t be sufficient for the hose box right?
@@bluekinopio9390 I know I replied to you but it didn’t show . PTFE thread seal tape works very well . You can purchase it from either lowe’s or Home Depot . If that doesn’t work you may have to replace the seal in the water hose . Seals in the water hose can go bad as well .
Just bought that same one and it's a piece of garbage. Very prone to break easily on the cheap plastic hinge. Don't bother purchasing them $20 worth. It's not even worth the $50 asking price period. Would NOT even recommend this cheap garbage at all whatsoever to anyone. STAY AWAY FROM ALL SUNCAST HIDEAWAY PRODUCT! SO DISAPPOINTING THAT THIS IS MADE IN THE USA. Suncast need to step up they're game and made better design if they are to continue thriving in this business. This is nowhere near inovation.
The second older suncast reel that you showed with the brown lid, is that the Smart Trak with the brass hookup? I had their original 20*20*20 all tan for about 15 years and it finally broke, and I was looking at one that looks like the second one you showed, but when I go to the reviews a lot of people say that the reel is breaking. Thanks for the video.
I am not sure. I lucked out with my older ones, for sure.
@@KimTownsel me too. One is going on ten years and the other one lasted fifteen years. If you go to Amazon and type in "Hose Cabinet 225 ft. Brown" it looks like the older one you have.
Kim.
Your supose to put your hand on the knob and guide the hose to make it even. It is not automatic.
Thanks!
The new one you are showing is junk. It wabbles around while feeling a 100 ft host. You need to secure it somehow so it won't be jumping around while feeling in the host.
I agree!!!
This kind of garden hose reels i have had a lot they are good for breaking them if you pull it so hard it’s just throwing away your money it’s better the metal ones last longer and easy to fix
You don't have a auto hose guide its a handle on it you have to do it
Great video ❤️👍
Thank you
My pleasure!
@@KimTownsel you saved my day, thank you again ❤️🙏🏽
Suncast = Fisher Price for adults.
🤣
You put up quite a battle trying to wind up that hose. Do you know if Suncast still makes the older style box with the threaded feed opening?
They do. They are just more expensive.
I don't know but I will be on the lookout.
@@KimTownsel I was just in my local Home Depot tonight, and I saw the one like what you had with the hose feed that goes side to side as you crank the hose in. Yes, it is a bit pricey LOL
I had similar problems..
My sun cast hideaway is utter garbage. Useless. Easier to wind it with my arm than using the mechanical parts of the box.
Looks like you aren’t using the guide, which is hand controlled, not automatic like your other unit.
I have the same reel by suncast since 2002, the same one you've had for 10 urs. I put 250' of actual rubber hose on it. It finally collapsed under the weight in 2019. My fault. I bought the incorrect replacement parts and finally just bought this one with the automatic traverse. Put less hose on it and within 1 week my wife broke off the supply fitting. Suncast won't warranty it. 5 year warranty my @ss!
I just got one at sam's club it is automatic works very nice
Is it the one that reels the hose by water pressure? I also have that one but haven't yet installed it.
@@KimTownsel yes it is my dear works very well never go back to anything else
@@longislandcerealkiller6385 what’s the make and model? I need one and the one on the video gave me a headache just watching.
I have an older one and it has leaked forever, difficult to make even a simple repair. Pretty much trash
My old ones are better than this new one. Sad!
These things are dogshit, the best you will do is 2 seasons before they break, sadly I speak from experience.
Looks like you need a washer
Is this made in China?
Probably.
Isn’t everything?
That's just a crappy model. You needed the larger model.
lol your suppose to use the guide with one hand and wind it up with the other , its manual , not automatic , like the other's you have that's what the knob on top is for ! SMH
*you're

Also, work on those capitalization and punctuation skills. You can do it!
Correct this Grammer Nana a F & U thanks for mocking people with disabilities glad you think your gooder " better " than others
Looks like a pain in the butt😀
0:31 for the obligatory amazing legs shot😏❤😉 they look competition ready🤘
It would be fun to hide away with you ;-)
Not in this thing! 🤣
@@KimTownsel deal!!
@@KimTownsel so what would you propose?
I never own a Suncast plastic hideway garden hose storage! Just throwing money away and end up disassembling it to put in the garbage container. It not recyclable in the recycle container, either. Big waste of time too! Just take the $60 and go to restaurant and have a nice dinner and two-three shots of bourbon!😊
😅
