I used to live in this castle as a teenager with my parents when the Castle was at it's full glory. I'm 61 years old now, and I still have loads of memories of living in this wonderful castle and it being open to the public and the jousting tournaments and of course that magnificent staircase. I hope it get's restored one day, I'd love to visit the castle again
I bet there are not many people who can say that they once lived in a castle. Well, I did. As a teenager, I used to live in this very castle with my parents when the castle was in its full glory. To this day when I see footage like this, it brings back so many memories of when Gwrych Castle in Abergele was open to the public at the time I was living there. When I see pictures of the beautiful great staircase I have many memories of running up and down those stairs. It saddens me to see the castle in such a rundown state. I hope one day it can be restored to its full glory. On the humorous side because I lived in a castle, does that mean you all have to call me "Lord Roscoe" now? or even "King Roscoe" 🙂 🙂
I came here when i was about 7 years old in the early 70s during an holiday to Rhyl with my parents etc the knights and medieval re enactment was great to see and i fondly remember this still.
Fantastic video....i have visited gwrych castle regularly for the last 40years firstly when i was 9years old for the jousting events and continue going to most of the events upto date, i really hope one day this castle is returned to the beautiful castle it was once........
Back in the late 80s early 90s my grandparents lived in Llandudno. Every time we drove over to see them whilst we where passing the castle my dad would point at the tower look out and say when we move to north Wales that's going to be your bedroom! Xxx
I visited this amazing castle 30 or 40 times from the early 60s to late 70s with my family, as we used to holiday in Towyn. I can remember the red carpet and beautiful ropes as hand rails as you entered the main entrance. We would take a ride on the miniature railway before having a picnic on the slopes of the main grounds. A visit down into the dungeons at the age of 8 years old, made the blood curdle a little. And to finish off, I would always cheer for the the Knight in the silver armour to win the jousting. An incredible place.
I have some happy memories of seeing this castle alot as a kid. My grandmother used to have a Caravan in abergele facing the fish and chip shop with the yellow fishmen statue and I think there's a 2 pubs further up towards the the beach. We could see the castle from the caravan park in the summer beautiful view and castle happy memories never forget them.
i remember this castle as a little girl when it was all lit up of a night gone back a few times could not get in going back in the summer well done mark xxxx
What an absolute tragedy it's been left to rot like this, I have great memories of this place from the early 60s, one if my main memories is of the grand staircase with red carpet, and ropes round it so you couldn't get up there a chamber of horrors for adults only, a huge suit of armour and a marquee outside with a man playing the organ, oh and the miniature railway loved it all
Very interesting video and well made, it's such a shame the way Gwrych Castle has ended up, I've been a few times now and the place still seems magical, let's hope it will finally get the restoration it so lovingly deserves
So sad I visited when I was a child, and later to see the tournaments. It had deteriorated by then and access denied. Later there was a caravan and camping site again access denied. We'll done young man.
Sad to see what can happen to a building in such a short period of time. Property developers are the kiss of death for historic buildings like this. Good work young Mark (or not so young now); your determination and tenacity are a credit to you. I've been following progress on the Gwrych Castle Facebook page for some time. Oh, and I now know how to pronounce Gwrych!
WELL DONE MARK BAKER. I hope you've not given up. This island nation is shameful how it doesn't treasure and celebrate it's architectural history. 4 sources to blame for the state of the place:- (1) the local community, for not taking pride in and ownership of their local community. (2) the New Age Settlers - regardless of the rights / wrongs of their way of life / principles, and whether or not they had the moral right to be "custodians", they had a moral and human duty to respect and protect the building and land, anything else was just abominable, selfish, self-centred toilet scum. Hope karma met / meets them head on. (2) the foreign greedy "blame everyone else but ourselves" materialistic, unscrupulous wankers. (3) the pathetic local council....where are you when balls are required, oh that's right, you only bully and target the lower classes.
