Shane, nearly 10 years ago I was in discussion with Ian B who owns Artist. I told him that he needed to incorporate a small tube amp range in his brand as I was keen in investing and helping him brand and build the business further. I researched and found the makers of the amp, and supplied all of the concepts to him for what became this little beauty. We never did do that deal as Ian is Ian but I can say that I think I managed to help design and grow what is now a very good tube range and also provide a quality product that players of all stages can and do consider a game changer. Ian if you're reading this, you're welcome mate - SB.
Greetings Shane. I totally agree that The Tweedtone is great. I have 2 of them and am rapped. One great little thing I discovered ( you may already be aware of this ) is that the tone controls seem to be active. By that I mean you can cut the signal entirely by turning the 3 eq pots down to zero. You can then turn up the volume and gain pots as high as you want then slowly increase any of the eq pots you wish. This works brilliantly especially if you want to play at bedroom levels because it allows the volume pot to get past the initial part of its sweep where very little signal gets through and the sound is very thin. Hope this makes sense. Cheers. Mick Power
My old Ampegs do that and I was told it was a Baxandall tone stack, whatever that means. The Ampeg GVTs use it too. I looked it up back when I was told all that, interesting way of making an amp. I wonder if this is the same, I like it on my amps for sure. Pretty sure Polytones do that too, I will have fire one up later to know for sure. I did not look any of this up, so I may wrong! I'll double check later...
@5:03 Edge of breakup = can't go wrong. I've learned that for the music I like and play less gain is better than more gain with a cranked tube amp. That sound just does it for me as the sound at full volume is still clear & defined.
I bought this amp a couple of weeks ago..Absolutely in love with it!! I was after my first valve amp, but was also looking for something affordable. This is perfect, and based off of your previous reviews! I thought I was going to have to add a Captor X as I live in an apartment and didn’t want to blow the roof off..But I was pleasantly surprised with the master volume that allows that sweet tone to come through without blowing the roof off as well as not disturbing my neighbours! I’m so happy to have this beauty!
Again...SHOP AROUND. I bought a USED , hand-wired Fender Twin Reverb from 1976, for $800. Just a tremendous, fine amplifier, from an actual guitar and music store. So they knew the value.
Sounds like a versatile little combo. A 20 watt tube amp is the ideal for most gigs…so my Victoria 20112 tweed deluxe gets the most use for this reason
Yeah ... I gotta think the Victoria's are a "different " whole trip ! Hand wired in Naperville IL , U S of A (Chicago land) ... Super clean (& expensive) but I'm jonesing for a 5112 ...😇
Bought one of these a few years back on the strength of Shane's video. No regrets at all. It sounds beautiful. The only caveat for me is that if I switch from clean to dirty, I need to put an eq pedal on for one of them because the drive channel is quite a lot darker than the clean. Thanks Shane, your recommendation was perfect for me.
Peavey classic 30 has the same problem. Rather than using an eq pedal l set the amp eq to suit the dirty channel on the trebley side and when clean, I back the tone off, on the guitar.
I have just bought the TweedTone 12A 12 Watt Combo. I am absolutely blown away at how good this Amp sounds. Artist have produced a Winner here, Definitely a Keeper for me.
Always looking for that “just right” volume tube amp for small gigs. This looks like a good alternative to most available. Nice demo and playing, thanks
It sounds awesome, Shane..!! Jimbo here from The Great State of Washington, USA. Back in the Saddle Again, Mon. Got really sick but You can't keep a good man down for long. The amp with Your great playing is really something. Great to be back......
I think that for the price this amp is punching way above its weight in value. The sound is as good as any Fender tweed at a fraction of the cost and gives you a bonus of a dedicated drive circuit that serves up classic rock tones in abundance. Thanks for sharing.
@@robertlevasseur8896 I have been playing for over 40 years and have owned a couple Fender Tweed amps as well as Silver Face combos and honestly there are so many great tube options that come in at half the cost but deliver the tonal representations if you spend the time to EQ them. I work in musical instrument retail and anymore the quality of tone is not nearly as vast of a gap as it once was. Now, I will say this, it is hard to replicate the sound of an aged tube amplifier using a current reissue of the same circuit. Just like a modern reissue of a vintage model guitar is not going to produce the same tone as a naturally aged vintage model. Cabinet materials just like tonewoods age and how they transfer vibration changes. Speakers loosen up as the cone and surround materials age, and tubes that age react to EQ adjustments differently. Heck the aging of the potentiometers have an effect on tonal shaping. With this in mind no two amplifiers will ever sound the same regardless of manufacturer or manufacture dates. The levels that you play through the amp and the type and amount of effects you add into your signal chain consistently will make an amp sound different from a model that is virtually 1 number in serial succession to each other.
@@MaxPower-js1sk That's not true. They had a guy in Australia design the latest model which is on the way over right now. They might not build them, but have all the input into the gear.
@@intheblues Shane, I believe that I said that Artist doesn’t make the amp, as in manufacturing the amp. I didn’t say that it wasn’t made somewhere else, and I wasn’t lying. It’s a bit harsh to accuse me of saying something untrue.
This is an amazing amp. Bought mine used and upgraded. The stock transformer was replaced with one 2x the output of the stock component. It's a Z11 silicon. Purchased a footswitch. I don't use any processing beyond a little reverb. In the weeks I had it I've never been able to get an acceptable sound out of the overdrive channel. So, I started to overdrive the clean channel with the guitar volume pot. As I'm primarily a vocalist it's a bit more fiddley than I would like, but I've been getting better at it everyday. Don't even use the pedal or overdrive channel at all now. Have taken it to a couple blues jams and this little beast more than holds it own. One of the regulars described it as a 'little warrior'. Very appropriately named. Artist Tweedtone 20r. The Little Warrior.
I’ve had my AG Tweed for 2 years, based in Shane’s positive review. I am delighted and am glad that I traded in two bigger, older transistor amps for it. The valves have been swopped out which is easy enough to do. The only issue experienced is the deterioration of the plastic in the input jack, but AG replaced this unit for A$25. The amp sings and has enough tonal range and options to gig without additional pedals.
Yea I purchased this amp a couple of weeks ago also and I absolutely love it..its my first tube amp and am very impressed with its tone... blows me away to be honest...
$500? Love it. Gotta give up the effects loop, but as long as the reverb sounds good it's something i can live with. A 3- band EQ is a BIG plus. It sounds exactly like what is in my head the first time i ever plug into a Tweed-style ampfor the first time, but rarely do i find it. Kind of like when I plugged into a Silver Jubilee for the first time and was met with the Marshall sounds I'd always expected but had yet to find until then. I was going to build a 5E3 because I'm looking for a tweed but i actually think this will work better. The celestions are good, but it'll come out immediately. I have an Eminence EJ1250 50W Alnico and a 30W Celestion Alnico blue that have been waiting to be used in something for the last couple years. Since I'm likely going to use it home more often than not (i have other amps for those gigs) the 30W Celestion blue is probably going to be the ticket. Great demo, as always. 👍
I have recently purchased one of these 2nd hand in NZ. (approx. 2 1/2 yrs old). A day after I bought it home and played for a while it started blowing fuses. Yeah I hear you, I really like the tone and practicality of these. I have enough gear though! When these came out I thought about getting one but bought a used Ulbrick Club 20 and it's great, but need a pedalboard, as there's no reverb or drive channel.
Very cool man, this little amp rocks. I've wondered about Artist quality and reliability and haven't stepped in. So far your demos get me leaning in. I've seen the 5 watt and wondered if I could use it for home jamming/recording. Thanks for the post and great playing mate.
I like the little Orange lunchbox style amps run through a 4x12 cabinet. I use that setup with my band. I'm partial to the British sound with humbuckers. 20-30 watts is more than enough for anything. This amp sounds great!
Fender are jacking up their prices to the point it's essentially price gouging. I spoke to a Fender dealer who told me they've done three hikes in the last year alone. And they have them built in China now anyway. This looks like a wonderful option! Let's just hope Artist don’t start raising their prices substantially too which happens a lot with cheaper manufacturers off the back of UA-cam influencer coverage. Btw, I'd rather go blind? Sounded great!
That drive channel has so much gain on tap that it could even do metal, especially with a drive or boost in front of it. Perhaps the most versatile tweed amp I have ever seen and for a great price! I had considered amps like the Blues Junior and DSL 40CR but this thing seems like better value. The only drawback is that this appears to have no effects loop as far as I can tell.
100% - The drive channel is a beast on this thing. It's a bit like the crunch channel on the DSL40CR (which I have one as well). It's very versatile :)
Love it! Great-sounding amp! Playing along at home with my strat and my new pedalboard, I was able to match all the sounds, using just two of the pedals and no amp. About $250 invested, less the FRFR PA, but including the pedalboard and PSU. Still, I might get one; the whole pedalboard cost over a grand, but it might be even more amazing, with a 2 channel tweed amp.
I tried to buy one when i saw your original review, but sadly couldn't. I ended up with an Egnater Rebel 30...also reviewed by you. No looking back from that purchace! Thanks Shane!!
Damn that sounds like a great alternative to your typical Fender printed circuit board reissues or Deville/blues Jr etc! If it was easy to get one in Canada I’d probably have already hit the buy now button.
Nice work Shane. These amps are great. I tried one out at the Artist showroom and I was really impressed.....and yes...they are plenty loud! The customer service at Artist is really impressive too. Great tone, great prices and great service. How can you go wrong?
Pretty decently priced amp. I accidentally killed my Fender Blues Deluxe, which was my main amp for 10 years. Just switched to a 20 watt, albeit a pricey Tone King Imperial Mk2, and oh boy that amp just sounds so much better. 20 watts is a nice sweet spot, just loud enough for my needs.
Very nice, great little amp. Though these days players with limited facilities are going to want effects loop, line out (maybe emulated), speaker connection options. I have a nice little amp with none of those options and it does wick me. Mind you, mine doesn't even have reverb, at least this one does and it does sound good.
Pair it with a power attenuator and it is the perfect all rounder. Even doubles as a cab when the mood takes ( not that it will often). Artist knocked it out of the park with this gem.. 👍🇦🇺
YEAH! Sounds an upgrade from my Monoprice 15-watt with one channel. But I will miss the analog reverb tank - I love to bang on it for the last song to end with a satisfy crash reverberate around the room.
I'd love to hear this amp demoed with a Klon-style overdrive pedal for some hard rock tones. (Great playing, Shane! I've never hard a Seventy-80 sound so good.)
Very nice. As a tweed type user with a Tone King having used many types over the years I'm ashamed to say I got caught up in hype I'm older now and more frugal. Horses for courses but I'm going for one of these I think.
So its not drive switchable with a foot switch? Dang! Sounds killer tho! I enjoy your playing, your candor and your accent. Reminds me of Nick Vujicic. If he had arms I'm sure he'd be an awesome player too.
Good little amps, I bought one after seeing your original reviews, good sound, though power hummed a bit at idle. Out of left-field, I removed the amplifier chassis from the cab, then removed the amp chassis out of my Katana 50 mk1, and installed it in the Artist cab (drilled a couple of holes, made little brackets), I then had a tweed Katana which sounded really good! Sold it though, but gee, I might buy another Artist. (Still have the old Katana)
Great amp for the money. I received mine a couple of days ago. Clean channel is great. Drive channel is good, but can get a bit oversaturated. Drive channel is great with humbuckers, but oddly very dark and muffled with my Strat 🤔 and it’s a bright Strat ….
Sounds like good ol Tennessee whiskey. Nice playing buddy. Sounds like a good amp. Indeed. Thanks man 😎👍👋👋🎸🎸✌️✌️. Reminds me of Fender blues junior amp. 👍👋💯 Met some Aussie Blokes years ago back in the military. In Somalia Africa. Great guys. Charismatic. Good times. Let's get some Goobers and Lollies 😂😂. Cya 👋👋
Sounds great! But I only need one really good amp so I’m sticking with my VoxAc15c1. 😊. Shane, more and more I’ve come to respect your opinions. Thanks buddy and keep it up.
Thanks for the kind words mate. This is quite a lot better than the Blues Jr, as I've owned a few. The cabinet is bigger, there are two dedicated channels and a reverb that is more usable (even though it's digital), and there's plenty more gain if you need it. :)
Yup, I've got a Blues Jr Texas Red (with Celestion 30) from 2008 and the Artist Tweedtone 20 (the same run as Shane's). Totally different beasts. The Artist is more aggressive and better sounding when overdriven, but the Blues Jr is much better sounding clean. Plugged into an openback 2x12 the Blues Jr takes it for me. BUT, they're totally different amps. And the Artist Tweedtone 20 is outstanding value for money. I've still got mine after four years, it's a fantastic little amp.
Actually it looks like a cross between the Blues Jr and a Hot Rod Deluxe as it has the output power similar to the Blues Jr and features of the Hot Rod but in cost cutting they had to resort to digital reverb and at half the price of a Fender I would imagine internal construction isn't all that great as even Fender is a bit shoddy at the Blues Jr and Hot Rod level of amps while the Artist is like half the price. Although being made in China vs Mexico might take them down enough to maybe approach the budget Fenders in quality if you are lucky Would be interesting to see a good analysis of the electronic construction, still it's hard to believe it's all that great considering the pricetag of $499. I guess if that's your budget and you want a tube amp it might just be your thing. Looks like a Monoprice amp with tweed Hot Rod cosmetics.
That is the only amp 175% of club and hall gigging guitarists need. There are so many fantastic pedals today that it is just easier and more pure to run the gain up front into a clean channel and all the time efx between the gain and clean input and forget the efx loop and cables. A good guitarist can take a Halo and Strymon Riverside in front of an amp and do 40 songs a night with a strat and a charvel hss. Personally, I have used a $279 Carvin SX300 Head at over 217 shows in the last years from your basic biker bar to The Whisky on Sunset….it sounds incredible with a strat and a charvel.

Beautiful soulful playing and fabulous tone. Hard to beat a Tele through a great tube amp.
Brilliant review awesome. I'm thinking of buying one in the future. Atb
Sounds like a great amp, pair it with someone like yourself who knows their way around the fret board, it sounds awsome. Nice tones for great tunes!
I never heard of this amp , love the tone , thanks Shane
Bought this 4 years ago when you made a video on it. Thank you!
Some very Allman Brother-erish links you were laying down there. Sounds like some of the jams from the At Fillmore East album, love it.
Thanks mate 🙏
Pretty decently priced amp. I accidentally killed my Fender Blues Deluxe, which was my main amp for 10 years. Just switched to a 20 watt, albeit a pricey Tone King Imperial Mk2, and oh boy that amp just sounds so much better. 20 watts is a nice sweet spot, just loud enough for my needs.
Those left-handed guitars always sound so good.
Good demo. The 1st time I've ever heard of this amp.
Like your posters. And a SOUTHPAW to BOOT! Cool.
~ here's My thumbs up; 👍 thanks for the gear reviews. The cleans on this are what I like, &, the two channels ~ reverb sounds good too ✨
Thanks mate! Rock on 🎸
Nice job man. Now that is the style of playing I like. Nothing turns me off than some young whipper snapper trying to impress us all with speed runs.
Ive been using my bass amps (100w tube, 250w SS, 15w Rumble) now I’m learning guitar and uke.
The Toneking MK2 has the Iron Man attenuator built-in. You can’t get a better attenuator or amp.
YEAH! Sounds an upgrade from my Monoprice 15-watt with one channel. But I will miss the analog reverb tank - I love to bang on it for the last song to end with a satisfy crash reverberate around the room.
Sounds good to me, especially for bedroom sounds, thanks Shane, you’re an amazing player.
The tone in rhe opening song is seriously channeling early Allman Brothers.. Seriously!👍👍
My main jamming amp!! So glad I got this!! Thanks intheblues
I'm getting one..Tax return amp coming up💯🤙🎸.Cheers Shane
I'd love to hear this amp demoed with a Klon-style overdrive pedal for some hard rock tones. (Great playing, Shane! I've never hard a Seventy-80 sound so good.)
Very nice. As a tweed type user with a Tone King having used many types over the years I'm ashamed to say I got caught up in hype
I'm older now and more frugal. Horses for courses but I'm going for one of these I think.
I have purchased many things you have demoed. This is my next! Thank you 👍👍👀🎸
You'll dig it! It's such a great amp. Once they started multiplying in my friend circle I knew it was a great as I thought it was haha.
@@intheblues very very excited will it cure my GAS?! Lol
@@inthebluesfinally got one. Thank you. Lots of fun
I liked it very much and that comes from someone that plays 80's hard rock at home.
So its not drive switchable with a foot switch? Dang! Sounds killer tho! I enjoy your playing, your candor and your accent. Reminds me of Nick Vujicic. If he had arms I'm sure he'd be an awesome player too.
It is, you need to buy an additional foot switch.
Thanks for this vid! This is just the amp I’m looking for great features for the price great playing to
I keep watching their site, but I’ve never seen these in stock in the US. It just sounds so amazingly good.
They were in stock the day of the review, they must have sold out! I know they moved a few after this video blew up. :) Hopefully they get more soon.
Great intro Shane. You and that amp sound great!!!
Great sounds at an affordable price. I need to order mine today 😮. 😊
Sounds mint! If I didnt already have a blues jnr, id consider it
Swop it.. you will thank yourself..😉
Great amp for the money. I received mine a couple of days ago.
Clean channel is great. Drive channel is good, but can get a bit oversaturated.
Drive channel is great with humbuckers, but oddly very dark and muffled with my Strat 🤔 and it’s a bright Strat ….
Very Cool, Thankyou. Love Artist Guitars everything has been Awesome. I may be looking to Get Artists 12W Tube Amp soon. Cheers
I should be reviewing one at some point :) Stay tuned.
Looks like a Blues Jr IV Copy... You are a Top Shelf Player Shane!!!!! My Compliments !!!
I don't need another amp, I don't need another amp.... It's not working ! Dang it Shane this demo was TOO good ! Thanks mate !
That first jam sounded like Tupelo Honey :) Love those Artist amps , Thanks Shane
Couldn't believe the price. Cheers Shane!
$500 USA - it sounds incredible. One of the Best sounding amplifiers you can find. Great demo. Got me thinking about getting one ???
Great Video .... I love this amp. wish I could get one here in Denmark
My fav tone is 8:37-8:50 crispy metallic but stays fully clean : on the single coils it's pure magic ! This amp is an absolute must !
Another great review with some really nice playing and tones - Thanks Shane!
Love the bends!
