- Cunard Queen Mary 2 is Iconic ship the only cruise liner in the world. We headed on Cunard Queen Mary 2 in September 2023 on a short cruise to Le harve and we have given it the full review.
Queen Mary 2 spends most of its year doing transatlantic to and from New York or heading on the world cruise so it was great to head onto this short cruise from Southampton.
Its the first time we have headed on Queen Mary 2 and even a Cunard ship. So we have given the liner our full review. Will be looking at Queen Mary's embarkation, the ship, the cabin, the all important Cunard service, food and drink. entertainment, destinations and we finally ask the question does queen Mary 2 offer value for money.

Those two single beds can be combined into a double, upon such the bedside tables are mounted to the outer sides thus restoring the ocean view from the window. It's because your cabin has been set up for two singles.
Thank you for your review. We are booked on QM2 for 14nights to the Med in 2025 to celebrate our joint birthdays (a big one). So your lovely look at the ships and areas and personal likes dislikes really helps. We do need a bit of clarity on the extra charges, one for drinks and the one for the room etc. As its in dollars and we are not that good at "sums" we cant work out how much budget we need for 14nights for 2 old "boozers" plus the cabin charge. Any tips would be appreciated. Keep cruising, we love your scoring and Aurora is our No.1 too.
Hi Janet thank-you for your kind words and watching. So a gratuity is 16 dollars per day per person around £13 when converted this automatically added. You can have this taken off if you wish and tip separately, or have the automatic one and tip individually as well it’s all personal preference.

As you acknowledged in your intro, the QM2 is an ocean liner, and she makes many transatlantic crossings each year. And, naturally, there are no ports of call in the middle of the ocean--you're just on that ship for seven solid nights, which may be a pro or a con depending on your perspective. However, I bring this up because I think that that being her main purpose, the staff are used to programming entertainment for those long hauls and perhaps do a better job in that context. They bring on a variety of entertainment types and there are various activities throughout the day and evening. Still, the entertinaments aboard the QM2 will never try to mimic the "younger" ships--don't expect rock-climbing walls or roller coasters on the QM2, for example!

Exactly. Comparing a Cunard liner to a cruise ship is like comparing a Range Rover to a party limo. They serve different purposes.
I am a bif Cunarder, and because of Covid and availability hadn't been onboard since 2019. I very recently did a Southampton-New York-Southampton back to back sailing and was fearing the worst from reviews and general Mr and Mrs. Grumpy of the internet. But you know, I had an absolutely wonderful time. Service was excellent, my sheltered balcony cabin was absolutely spotless and I found public areas to be just the same. Crew were all superb and I had an amazing voyage. Cunard comes in for a lot of criticism sometimes, and I think that often it is just popular to bash things that are British, and although not owned by British any more, it is still seen as a very British line. But, I won't stop sailing them and look forward to stepping onboard again. Glad you all had a great time!
For an older ship we thought she was spectacular and would definitely cruise again, would love to do the transatlantic. Thank you for watching.

A good video, thank you. In relation to destination, I recently did the Southampton - Hamburg return trip (4 nights). To me the destination was the ship alone, I wanted to experience QM2. I never even got off in Hamburg. QM2 is a fantastic ship, glad you enjoyed it, I did.

@@cruisingwiththe4bs I've sailed QM2 a few years back and will again next summer. We had (and will have again) a balcony cabin. I bring this up because there are only a small number of ocean view cabins like yours--probably 95% or more of the cabins have balconies. In the balcony cabins, the beds are along a side wall, so those lamps don't interfere with anything. Are those lamps enormous? Yes! But no one ever said "gee, that lamp is blocking my view of a wall!" So maybe in that context, the lamps aren't totally unreasonable. Still, I take your point that when you have so little view, it's a shame to block it, and maybe they could have chosen some other lighting for those few cabins.
I think I was on that very same cruise. Was it the first weekend of September 2023? I totally agree with your review. One thing I’d point out: the lamps on the bedside tables look really nice if you have the double bed configuration. Other than that your review is spot on. In fact we’ve booked a back to back transatlantic for next year and can’t wait!

@@cruisingwiththe4bs we have done QM2 to Hamburg but that was before our vlogging days. We do need to get back on a Cunard ship though.
Great vlog. The QM2 is my husband’s favourite. Just to let you know, when the single beds are joined to make a double the bedside tables and lamps are on either side of the bed. If single beds are your preference don’t hesitate to ask for one of the lamps to be removed from your stateroom and that should help with easing the window obstruction. The staff are very accommodating. Happy sailing next year.

The two lamps blocking your view would normally be either side of the two single beds which would be made up to make a double bed configuration. Having said that, I would have thought they could have stored one of the lamps somewhere else

This is why embarkation is so much better in Southampton than in Brooklyn. We only left from Brooklyn one time and it was horrible. Everyone goes through security first and even if you have priority boarding it doesn’t matter. We waited hours. Then you go through check in and another long wait. Doing check in first and then security goes much faster.

I got the impression that you were going to score this ship highly and rightly so, it looks incredible.
No app is a mystery as it would save so much time at embarkation.
Those lamps were an odd choice for a Oceanview cabin, hopefully the refit will sort that out.
The one thing that is enticing me to try Cunard is the food, it looks so delicious.

While we expected a first-class trip on the Queen Mary2 we actually had a 5-star trip with a fantastic crew whose main aim in life was to provide a service that CUNARD is famous for.
All of the restaurants were equal to or better than most of the land-based and other cruise lines we have traveled on restaurants.
The only problem experienced was the very expensive and poor internet service with our only being able to have a good internet service when the vessel was berthed in a port.
And, unless you are a very heavy drinker it is strongly suggested that you steer well clear of the "Drink" packages.

Those lights in your cabin are only an issue because you’ve got it in the twin configuration. When it’s a double, the lights are either side of the bed

Erm yes! However everyone was dealt with quickly, we only went there twice over the week and it wasn’t too bad.

Love to see families on these cruises. A good voyage needs a mix of people, and since no one has to take a ship anymore, you tend to get more older passengers, with time and money to spare. And the kids need to know what it is to travel by sea.
Hi thanks for watching and your comments and 💯 agree it’s great way to see the world. We prefer anyway when it’s slightly less kids, even with us having kids we like a good mix makes for happy ship.
We only ever sail with Cunard and love it,although I'm not sure it's great for kids 🤷♀️

This ship is not the Queen Mary. The Queen Mary is docked in Long beach, California. This ship is the Queen Mary 2.
We are aware of this 🙂 it does say Queen Mary 2 in the thumbnail and description, sometimes just easier to say Queen Mary apologies if this has caused confusion.
