  • FOX Sports’ lead college football analyst Joel Klatt breaks down why Clemson’s upset loss to Duke wasn’t just a bad night but actually another example of how elite programs fall back to the pack in the sport. He then goes out West to detail why the Pac-12’s incredible talent at QB - from Caleb Williams to Shedeur Sanders - makes it the deepest conference in the country this year. Finally, he goes around the country from LSU to Oklahoma to Penn State to Colorado and more to let fanbases know how they should be feeling about their program after Week 1.

Joel - it's one game into the season. Let's calm down. And - did you happen to see the tape on JJ McCarthy and the tight - tight windows he was throwing into... And the massive improvements in his footwork and the way he was always in command of the game? There was never any doubt in the game outcome and therefore JJ was benched the entire 4th quarter! He could have thrown for 400 yards if he had played! And I watched the Colorado game - Sanders looked great - he really did - but the TCU secondary had one blown coverage after another! Receivers were open by 10 to 15 yards! Still love your work Sir - but it is only one game in.......

Michigan had a pretty solid win considering they were missing their hc and oc/play caller. Also still determining some starters on o-line, some defensive starters didn’t play due to injury… Michigans biggest question mark right now is maybe kicker/special teams?
Give any teams fan base that scenario, and I bet they would be pretty confident.

It depends. For the very top teams it's tough. You can win 10 games, but if you don't make/win your conference championship and beat your biggest rival, it's considered a bad year. For the average team 10 wins is amazing. For the top 10-12 teams you have to reach that next level year in and year out. Take Ohio State for example. I've talked to many of their fans and they felt like the fact that they didn't beat Michigan, didn't get to the conference championship, and lost in the playoffs, it was not a good year.

Or when you’re a storied program like Ohio State who in its entire history has never really had a bad era or bad decade per-say, it’s hard to ever have a “down” year cause the fan base has never experienced that….I just think that if we took the regular season at 12 games and you won 10 out of the 12 then I feel like it would be wrong to fire the coach when he won 98% of the games on that schedule ya know?

It's not just the QBs in the Pac12. It's the offensive corps for each team. The top 6 or 7 teams are deep at every skill position. It's always been a conference of skill positions. Cuz on the Westcoast, you get all these track athletes and alll they want to do is run in the sun lol. But it's not just the skill positions either. It's the coaching that enhances these offenses. This is a great group of coaches in the Pac12. Probably the best assembled since the Pac12 had Pete Carroll, Jim Harbaugh, Mike Belotti, Jeff Tedford, Rich Neuheisel, Chip Kelly, Dennis Erickson, etc.. now this conference has Lincoln Riley, Dan Lanning, Deion Sanders, Kyle Wittingham, Chip Kelly, Jonathan Smith* and Kalen Deboer*. Tennessee and FSU always recruited the Carolinas really well but when Clemson and actually South Carolina during the Spurrier, started coming up it changed everything. Spurrier leaving helped Clemson but now with Tennessee rising again and FSU getting it together, it effects them. Georgia is another one that hurts them. When Brent left, I knew this was all going to happen. He was the real reason for those titles, along with getting two generational talents at quarterbacks consecutively. The quarterbacks isn’t something that anyone has ever done and so that’s like hitting the lottery. They will continue to be good and win the ACC at times but national championships, nope.
