Finally someone is talking about importance of choosing the right song! It's an essential part of the level as you said, but I'd go even further than you did in the video. In my opinion song should be matched to:
1. Gameplay. I'm not only talking about sync, but also difficulty. Usually fast songs aren't great for easy levels as you'll have way too many inputs or half your gameplay will be auto, same with slow/calm songs for difficult levels, you'll want to have something to build gameplay to (with this one there are a few exceptions such as Lit Fuse or Our Fountain, but it's harder to pull off)
2. Style of decoration. Not every style will work with every song. Heavy dubstep just won't fit a modernistic level for example. Your decoration style should match the feeling of the song you're using. When coming up for ideas for levels I like to listen to a song a few times and think about how it makes me feel, which colours would match that feeling. Album cover or any art related to the song can also help with this one.
Overall correct song choice can make or break a level. Best example would be something like Kidsmoke, it just wouldn't work with any other song. Or Death Moon, song it uses became almost synonymous with the level. Please keep that in mind when making a level

one thing that I'd really like to mention is to start out simple. if you don't know how a lot of things work and you haven't tested your limits, you shouldn't try to make something super complex, it will just turn into a chaotic mess. know your limits, and expand them realistically.

Honestly just in general, comparisons never help. Artists, writers, and so many more people quit what they love because they keep comparing themselves to other people who have been doing that activity for years. Everyone has definitely been guilty of this in the past, including myself. Don’t compare, you do you! Great video Samifying, I’m glad you’re willing to help out new creators!
Yes, layering is helpful... but man does it suck.

After rewatching this your second point resonates with me a lot. During the vast majority of my time here I had the mindset where in order to make a good level I had to make levels that looked similar to other levels that were considered "good". I copied their styles, yet my levels were always worse than what I tried to build. It was only until recently when I changed my mindset and used GD as a form of self-expression and now I'm making the best levels I've ever made
I finally finished my level - Glowstep. It was so hard, but in the end..
it was worth it. Thank you sam, you just gained another loyal subscriber.

I particularly love the sentiment in the 2nd tip. I think everyone should be encouraged to be an artist and express themselves, make whatever the hell they want to make. Everytime i look at the featured section i always feel like most creators just look at other featured levels and copy what seems to be popular and liked by the general community rather than trying to be creative and not worrying about popular opinion.
I would have to disagree tbh. I feel motivated seeing something someone made that better than me. I feel the need to become better and a lot of the time it feels like I'm being motivated by others.

Solid video! I remember learning about AlignX when I watched KrmaL working on Black Blizzard and my mind was blown.
First thing I learned about the editor: Rotate trigger bad, rotate trigger very bad. Never use rotate trigger. RobTop fix your triggers.
Well its only super bad if what ur rotating is an object that cannot be freely rotated

@@7rodo well depends on what u r rotating,if the speed is unnaturally slow or fast ofc its gonna look bad
If an object that should be rotating isn't rotating, save and exit, then go back in. It should work then.
In gameplay yeah
I've only ever made layouts that focus on actually fun gameplay, but it's just cuz idk how to make good block designs or deco. You've inspired me with this one. Thanks, Sam

One of the most important things you need as a creator is creativity which is one of the hardest to come by ;-;
Good tips and overall a great video :) All I'd say is you should get a script to read off of. Your ad lib game is strong and your voice is sexy af, but you still stutter a bunch and restate the same things, so I highly suggest first writing a script for your videos :)
i should start writing scripts yea...... its just that im SO BAD AT THEM LMAO
that's okay, my scripts were shit too when i started :) Best way to learn to write is to just keep on writing and by time you'll get better !

I would like a tutorial focussed on glow as I seem to just fill my levels with glow to hide empty space but I don't want to just spam glow everywhere. I want to learn how to use glow effectively.
Adding to that, a tutorial based around air deco, or making levels look full without them looking messy would be another video I'd love to see.
Anyway these are just some suggestions, can't wait for Sedulous!
One thing that helped me a lot with empty spaces is 50%-10% opacity structures in the background. It depends on what style you’re doing, like my style uses ground spikes to kinda fill in the level a bit, like samifying. Kirkster same, tho i kinda got better at air deco, before i would add legit EVERYTHING I COULD for air deco so it wasnt “empty” but it was just extremely messy
I appreciate the attempt to help out new creators but when it comes to "mistakes creators keep on making" there's a VERY big spectrum of pitfalls and misconceptions that not only beginners fall into but those who've been creating for years have been constantly struggling on.
When it comes to videos like these I often think it's better to focus on that general aspect of creating (the mindsets to follow, lesser known editor features, general gameplay annoyances, etc) rather than coming up with random stuff on a whim and putting them in a top 5 so as to cover more content and expand on your points a little more.
hmm i don't think I can follow what you are saying,
The video is about these 5 mistakes i keep on seeing and thats about it. Its not a "tutorial" or anything its just a guidance video for people to be lead in the right direction.
The 3 things you listed (mindsets to follow, lesser known editor features, general gameplay annoyances) are all in this video like the mindset to stop comparing yourself to other or the align x and y or the invisible gameplay thingies everyone hates .
I appreciate you giving feedback but this is not supposed to be an "all around fix" for every creator D: I just wanted to make a short video on a few things people starting out should focus on!
Ah you must misunderstand. While those 3 topics I talked about are indeed covered in this video I think it's a lot better to have individual videos on those topics as there's a lot more to cover there that weren't fully explained or had been left out of the video.
For example, while introducing the Align X button is indeed helpful I would've liked to see a video that not only covered that, but also tools such as Build Helper, Chain Link Controls, and those little buttons beside the Z Layer that can change the layering of multiple objects at once covered at the same amount of depth as you did with Align X.
It's still quite a bit of effort but I think planning more on a topic for your video can help make you find a lot of coverage to work on that can benefit more creators.
@@SequexGD all of that is to come i want to make this a series with like 50+ videos covering EVERYTHING i can think off
it'll just take loads of time to get these videos to be made without an editor! But I am aware this video is kinda only surface level but it gets the point across and fixates new creators on stuff they should focus on imo!

I think one of the big mistakes that has creator mades especially if you're a new creator is making a level that was looking similar with other creators, meaning that the creators tried to make a level that has inspired by other creators instead of making your own original level that makes you really stands out as a creators. There are so many examples, like someone is trying become another "Knots" or "Xender Game" for example and just make a level that has similar style. The reason why it was a big mistake is because it makes the creators did not trying to be more creative by just copying style from the others. Because as a creators, like you said that making a level is like a blank canvas. You have so much wide chance of creativity and freedom that makes you really stands out as a creators and to do whatever you want to make in the level editor, and also provides you to improved your skills better in my personal opinion.
And i think one of the other big mistakes as a creator for me when you were too lazy to "playtesting" your own levels.

R4NGER 54 i actually disagree with this, i think it’s great for new creators to be inspired or even copy their favorite creators. it can be really hard to just start creating with nothing to base it off of. as long as they grow out of it and make it into their own style it’s a great thing to do. even sami based his style off hinds, but he grew into one of the best creators seen in the game.

There's another tip: if You use rotate trigger playtest OUTSIDE of the editor, not inside, because if you lag (even a bit) it will work not properly and it'll ruin the art you want to rotate, the bug only works when you're in "writing mode" (inside the editor), not in "read mode" (playing the level OUTSIDE the editor), hope it helps

To be honest,this is quite helpful.I have played gd for some time now.And creating and verifying levels have been a suffering to me.Since,I did sync too precise and made the layout too hard.And I don’t have much creativity in me.So....I usually can’t make original block designs and Backgrounds,and I have to rely on others to make tutorials.But after 3 years...Some of my problems were solved,such as the gameplay,layout etc.But decoration is still a hard one to accomplish.So,thank you...for pointing my hidden mistakes for me to improve better.

Wow. An in depth video about the real mistakes than some of us never knew we did... Again, this is a very inspirational video. I know gd is just a game but it's also a good creating game. It can even bring out the creativity and u can use some techniques from the game possibly in real life stuff! XD

The only thing that prevented me from finishing a level was the object limit until recently when I decided to just get an object limit hack. Still a really helpful video and I catch myself comparing my levels with other really detailed and good looking levels way too often. I try to get some inspiration but end up thinking that my levels are just bad

things that stop me is lag, i play on a midrange phone, and when trying to remake temple of destiny it drops my fps to spf (seconds per frame)

i like making 1.0 levels because they mainly focus on gameplay instead of design. for deco, i do some easy stuff like particles and thats it.

Sometimes I notice I feel like something is missing, but no matter where I look, I can't find which pieces connect it properly. This is most especially for the Fingerdash blocks.

I mean, I don't do most of these mistakes. I've been playing for 2 years only. Layering is one thing I just love and hate people who dont do it. It is just so hard to get the OBJs you want.
One thing I still do tho is know your tools. I know most of the triggers and stuff but there is just stuff I still don't know like follow trigger or some pause menu things. What is for example swap cycle mode?
The problem here is that most people can't find any tutorials for this. Yes, for triggers without a problem. But for these options no. I learned the filter trick (you select the OBJ you want, go to delete settings, click custom and then you will select only those objects. Really useful) on a stream by complete coincidence tbh.
What I suggest is you make a tutorial on these editor options and these tricks. It can help people who are starting out as well as some people who had been playing for more and still don't know.
