The Queen of Hip-hop/Soul
Say what you want about Mary's vocal technique and her intonation, but this will never change the fact that she's one of the most influential voices in hip-hop, R&B and soul. Together w Mariah, Whitney & Toni Braxton she paved the way for so many artists after her. Beyonce, Keyshia Cole, Sam Smith, Jojo, you name it, multiple R&B and pop artists have cited her as an influence!
Yep she's definitely a darker soprano voice. She has a great mix especially when her sound is focused. Her lows are really good. That Eb3 is really grounded! Her upper notes (F5-Bb5) sound freer than her mid notes. She has great emoting skills but she does have great vocal skills too. She also has really good stamina in the upper belt/mix range.
U think everyone is a soprano lol. She is so mezzo. You don't hear the bass in the low notes
@@mugrad25 You think everyone a mezzo soprano. It's not what I think it's about knowing. That's because the majority of women are sopranos. She's not a mezzo soprano. The problem is that people in this community doesn't know how a mezzo soprano sound like. They hear a little warmth or depth all of a sudden she's a mezzo soprano. You don't have to sound like a mouse to be a soprano.
@@ThePianoguy89 not true..I thought faith evans was a soprano whereas you called her a mezzo even though her voice is lighter, brighter, more robust at the top, and she tends stay up in the upper room.
We're hearing two different things, mary is blasting the low and mid notes. Also this where she sits in most of her songs (not gonna cry, love no limit, everything, ain't really love)...she goes off in the middle register. The top notes are when she was having a good day but not the "norm" for her...you fail to see this
Jennifer Hudson has depth and warmth to her voice. But she tends to go off at the top (G's) consistently so it's hard to say she is a mezzo. She is a robust soprano.
@@mugrad25 That's why I deleted that comment because I became much more educated. Faith is a soprano, so is Mary, Keke, Tamia, and many others this community call mezzo sopranos. Mezzo sopranos are not as common as people think. Mary's voice brighter and higher in tessitura than any actual real mezzo soprano. A mezzo soprano would have a darker, richer, and bigger voice. You should learn how voice classification functions in opera before you apply them to non-classical singers. Taylor Swift hardly belts past E5 does that make her a mezzo soprano? Range has nothing to do with your voice type. There are other sopranos who do go past F5 but that doesn't make them a lower voice type. Your voice type has everything to do with your tone color, technique, and development. Even in opera singers are misclassified due to lack of development. Mary's sound isn't even as a big as a true mezzo soprano. A mezzo soprano would be Mahalia Jackson, Etta James, Sade, Adele, Judy Garland, or Gladys Knight. The ones that people mistakenly call contraltos. You have to have a well developed ear to understand these things.
@@ThePianoguy89 definitely a soprano
Her E5s, and G5 from "Enough Cryin" will ALWAYS be like.
The G#5 belt was pretty flawless too.
After four times, I finally reuploaded a video w no mistakes! 😝😝😝
Ooh, she sings from that inner dark hurt!
The one and only, The Queen of hip hop soul Mary J. Blige 👑💖✨
She isn't a SOPRANO by any stretch. What she is, is a fully developed singer who can visit the upper registers with a certain effort. I would say she is an alto, with great range and ability to visit other octaves.
Mezzo-soprano maybe. Her voice isnt masculine enough to be alto. Compare her voice to Phyllis Hyman
She’s a soprano. There’s nothing dark about her voice to make her mezzo. Alto isn’t a voice type…
@@reggiemitchell5198 then wtf is alto then? And I believe Mezzo's can have lighter timbres too. Yolanda, Chaka, and Kierra Kiki Sheard are all Mezzo's. They can hit soprano notes, but I believe they put in more effort to hit some of them compared to actual sopranos.
@@milesjohnson7423 Alto is a CHORAL PART. It is a not a voice type. Mezzos mostly have darker and deeper vocals. For example toni Braxton or Erica Campbell. Chaka khan is a mezzo she belts so high because she mixes most of her belts. Kierra Mary yolanda are all sopranos. And they don’t have to put in effort to hit most of the notes they hit. They can effortlessly go to F5s. The three vocal ranges for females are soprano, mezzo soprano, and contralto. Mary’s voice is to bright and to light to be a mezzo. Chaka khan was once a soprano in her younger days. But like I said Mary is a soprano.
@@milesjohnson7423 now Mary might be a mezzo in present day because she hasn’t taken care of her voice. But most likely is still a soprano.. most women are actaully sopranos and some are mezzos but contraltos are very rare.
I always thought that Mary was a mezzo due to how comfortable she is in her mid range as opposed to her upper register.
She's a soprano. She just has a darker color. She actually has a lot of ease and comfort in her upper mix. Her voice is much brighter than a true mezzo like Mahalia Jackson or Etta James.
@@ThePianoguy89 I understand that some sopranos can have a lower tessitura than other sopranos that are typically bright but they also can have mezzos with a higher tessitura as well, especially if they're coloratura mezzos. I think that a lot of times, people mistake higher mezzos as sopranos because they don't sound like the average mezzo since their voices are typically dark and I think that's what's happening with Mary J. Blige but I respect your opinion.
@@markshelton3121 She really is a soprano though. It's not based on my opinion. She is a darker colored soprano. Her tessitura is still higher than any true mezzo soprano. Mary actually lives in the soprano tessitura. She sustains and has endurance in the soprano range (F5-C6). A mezzo soprano wouldn't be able to stay up there for long periods. A real mezzo soprano would sound darker, richer, and bigger than she does. Mahalia Jackson, Etta James, Cher, and Sade are true examples of mezzo sopranos.
She is a mezzo soprano..too much weight in the low notes
@@mugrad25 I thought I was the only one that felt this way cuz Mary doesn't sound like a soprano to me at all and plus, she doesn't sing in the soprano region too often which is another telltale sign that she's a true mezzo.
I want to see an updated video of her range. Because her voice is even darker now. I don’t think she can hit all of the 5th octave notes displayed here anymore
She can’t unfortunately. Her upper register is all but gone but shockingly her lower register is full, dark and heavy.
mezzo-soprano voice. fantastic mixing technique
She wasn’t always one I would say in her prime she was more a full lyric but definitely developed into a lyric mezzo
Agreed! Full Lyric Soprano
She is totally 100% mezzo-soprano
How? mezzo-sopranos highest note is A5 not Bb5.
@@whitneyhouston1122 frienddd
Shes like a falcon soprano
@@diorrboyyyy Omggggg HIIIIIIIII!!!!
Absolutely absurd to think she is a soprano. Yall focus on high notes too much instead of the.voice as a whole. She "visits" high notes but doesn't live there. She has way too much bass in the mid to low register to be a soprano. There is also no brightness to the voice as at all.
There’s ton of contemporary soprano with better mid lmao 💀
@@loveyall1910 You know how these people are lol.
@@loveyall1910 like who?
@@ThePianoguy89 there is absolutely no reference referring to Mary as a soprano at all. But of course you know better than everybody lol
@@mugrad25 Eydie gorme, a trained coloratura soprano. And before you start claiming she’s a “mezzo” 💀 she has a mix F6 and ton of B5 in mix

Madeline Kahn, her voice is like chip munk (especially in her speaking voice)

I can name ton more. But these are high soprano
What's the song title at 5:03 - 5:08 ? Anybody knows please?
Not Today fr. EVE
Nope
@@EliSlayzLol should’ve known.Theres like 30 songs with Eve name on it that sound like that.
I miss the time in life
She is nowhere near a sopranos voice. Her voice just doesn't really blossom in her upper belts, and she also doesn't live in her head voice. She also doesn't really have a lot of dynamics in her upper voice, which is a must of you want to classify as a soprano in any way.
Singing high and having a high teissitura are 2 complete different things. In not trying to take away anything form Mary her artistry, but she probably is a mezzo soprano.
Yes she does dummy. You don’t know anything about Mary let alone singing. This video doesn’t even display her soprano singing.
Falcon soprano or Dramatic soprano !!!!!!!!!!
definitely not lol she’s a mezzo soprano
Falcon definitely
what was the first song on her C#5?
Power to the people, it was a live concert event
This was not a good example of a vocalist in my humble opinion. I love her and still listen to her albums, but live she has never done it for me. Also sounds like she hasn't healthily maintained her chords as well. A LOT of her high belts and HV sound strained and that C6 was not good. Again this is just how it sounded to my ear. Maybe coz I'm used to studying phenomenal vocalists like Whitney, Luther, Beyonce, Barbara, Pavarotti, etc.
So is she a soprano or a mezzo soprano?
Full-lyric soprano
Mezzo...this is a classic example of a mezzo
Soprano
she's a mezzo soprano
She’s a dancer
