Been a CBr for 10 years and a Ham for 25 this is typical range based on hills, trees foliage etc.: CB mobile to mobile both running Single Sideband with no Skip or noise relatively quiet you will have clear communications 10-15 miles with random dead spots. 100 watts on SSB mobile to mobile maybe 25-30 miles. An AM 4 Watts CB Mobile to mobile about 3-5 miles then spotty in and out. KW Mobile to KW mobile on 11 meters might get you 60-80 miles. FRS UHF handheld to handheld in normal terrain 1/2 to 2 miles unless an unusual line of site path. Always exceptions, tropo, skip band openings but what I am quoting is realistic range
You must have antenna trouble, I can talk 20 miles AM mobile on 4 watts no problem. With 100 watts ssb in the mobile I've talked 60 miles easy everyday.
I get much much more in distance with stock equipment then what you stated in this video. With a 4 watt dead key and no amps for additional power in a mobile set up i achieve 40 to 50 miles from my truck. And my base radio witch is a Galaxy Saturn on a Antron 99 antenna I have gotten 200 hundred miles.
Dale- this is because you are likely transmitting during atmospheric conditions which facilitate long-range communication. Atmospheric Propagation is one of the main reasons we amateurs (or CB'ers) operate on HF. Basically, you're talking whats called "Skip". Add an amplifier to that and you'll expand that range from 40-50 miles to a few thousand miles during Skip-Propagation times. 73' bud-
No shit? 100 mi ? That is way better than I ever expected. So my old 73’ Regency CR185 should get out 20 mi maybe with a good antenna? That’s encouraging, I have a 40 watt linear amp that was given to me and I never really messed with it.
Question please…….thinking of putting a “base” unit in my house so I can communicate 20-30 miles out to my children in case cell phones go out. They would have a mobile CB in their car ( Cobra 50 WXST ). Would this work ?
I have a gain master base antenna up 45 feet to the top, with a uniden pc-122 I can talk 30 miles anytime to another base. On ssb I can talk 45~50 miles anytime. If I run 100 watts my range tops out around 60~65 miles. The land here is flat.
Well I talk about qrp I've talked to Norway on 12 watch single sideband I've talked to Australia Western Australia on single sideband with 12 wides I think I'm doing is good qrp is any ham you ever seen hams get to use 1500 watts SC beers don't have that privilege however I believe we can hold our own in the qrp business.

@@thevacuumtubejunky9774 ... Leesville, LA to Sydney, AU on 5 wants with a Realistic HTX-100 and a 102" SS whip on a ball mount on 10 meters USB. Then worked 2 hams on Pitcairn Island in the South Pacific 20 minutes later.
I just want to be able to communicate from NY City to Stroudsburg PA which is approximately 80 miles. Doing research on how to accomplish this but it's difficult to get clear answers.
Everything will depend far more on conditions than on equipment. There are no guarantees which is why it is a thrill when you do make contact with someone nearly 100 miles away. To at least attempt distances like this you will need to look at a SSB radio and might also need some additional wattage. A regular SSB Radio should give you 12 Watts out of the box and you should be able to go to 25 or 50 Watts once you've got everything dialled in. You'll need a bit of luck and great conditions to be sure you are making those kinds of distances
Get your Ham license and you can talk those distances all day every day. Weak signal work on 2M, 70cm or 6M will get that range no problem on SSB with beams. 75M if you want to go HF route. 40M if you wanna talk when short during daytime only. 11M will take a Yagi at both stations and possibly some power to accomplish depending how how you can get both beams up at. Good luck & 73.
Looking to buy a home base unit Ariel and anykit I need and the car CB and Ariel do you have any for sale I want the complete working kit off of one person if possible
I must be unusual.... I really dont care and have no interest for DXing and seeing how far I can get. I would sooner have a good talk with a stranger thats local 10 - 20 miles. Back in the 80's. My silver rod snapped off at the coil after a year. I made a temporary 36ft dipole from some 2.5 twin core wire and strung it at washing line height. It worked fantastic and I used it for the next 15 - 20 years before quitting CB Im now setting back up but only as mobile... Im going to use my original 1979 mag mount and DV27
On a good day, you can talk around the planet. On a bad day, you can talk across the street.

I'm just getting started in CB and in GMRS. Thanks for the info you're putting out. Very helpful to a newbie like me. Please keep them coming.

Sydney Australia to a mobile in Glasgow Scotland 10 ,000 miles
Get up high with a decent antenna (1/2 wave or better) and you can easily achieve 100 miles or more on only 4 watts.

Excellent explanation and analysis! Well done
Mobile using a wilson 1000 w/stock radio I get 20~25 miles AM and 40 ssb.
That is true, but only if there is somebody to hear you. In most of the USA there isn't. CB is dead. Cell phones killed it.
