When I started this style 40 years ago, the training was so hard I could not walk after the class. The instructor said, if you did not hurt so badly that you could barely move the next morning, you didn't put enough effort into class. And that is the way it was, 2 hours of class, 4 hours of training, drills and practice after class, This is the real thing, not children's karate. I have not seen anything to compare to what those classes were then.
Robert Spiller No, I am sorry to say I have not. I am now over 66 years old,. Early on I saw that the basic kyokushin training I received was better than any other style I tried later to round out my training. I just continued with it, and concentrated on it alone.
When I started kyokushinkai Karate with Tadashi Nakamura in 1968, at the Brooklyn Academy Of Music, the training was hard but sensible. The beginners started off slowly and the brown and black belts were put through their paces in a rigorous manner. But Having been both a physical therapist and later a psychologist I became acutely aware of the danger of some underlying medical condition that could result in serious injury or even death to students. The trainer should be ideally trained not only in martial arts but also at a minimum, some form of resuscitative medical emergency treatment in order to protect the student's well being, the school's reputation and to avoid potential lawsuits. The alternative is to have trained personnel present. I remember during sparring one of the black belts was knocked unconscious and would not wake up.Fortunately the teacher had some remedial techniques at his disposal. The student's heart had stopped and the bottom of his feet were slapped with the open hand and while he was being held in a sitting position, he was hit with the open hand palm heel several times between the shoulder blades and he woke up with a gasp. We were all so happy that a potentially dangerous situation ended well. Wr must be careful even when training hard for Kyokushinkai can be unimaginably hard.
This takes me back to when I first started learning when I was a child. I remember most being told by Kin Sensei at the end of my first day that Kyokushin was not for everyone it is very hard, very painful and unrelenting but we are the blade and our teachers were there to sharpen us everyday until our skills were honed to there best...the lessons I learned not just the techniques have stayed with me my whole life. Kyokushin is a way of life and even tho I haven't been to a dojo in a long time I still train and keep the leasons I learned dear to my heart because Kyokushin is not just a martial art but a way of life and a guide to live life. Our Dojo kun says it all.
It is an honor to learn this style under Sensei Cote at Cote Karate Studios here in Nashua NH. My children as well as myself study this now and they have grown so much in 9 months. His Sensei was in this video very exciting for us to see this.
This is the basis of all Karate. Straight to the point hard style. I trained in the Village in New York years ago in Kyokushin. The only thing i did not agree with was the test for Black belt and beyond. It's down right brutal. They put you in a circle and you have to fight everyone. Its really hard. Kumite is what it's called. Full blows to the body and kicks to anywhere . When i say full i mean full !!
I’ve been doing this style since the age of two. It’s been hard- I’m now 5 and can adequately defend myself on the street. However it’s taken it’s toll on my joints. Be careful train hard and drink milk. It’s the way.
