  • For those in swing states, political ads are an inescapable part of life. But if you haven’t experienced the blitz firsthand, this episode of the 538 Politics podcast offers a glimpse into the barrage of campaign messages flooding our screens. Erika Franklin Fowler, director of the Wesleyan Media Project and professor of government at Wesleyan University, joins the podcast to break down the wave of ads hitting TVs, phones and browsers this election season. We explore whether Donald Trump or Kamala Harris has the upper hand and the topics dominating both national and downballot races.

A video would’ve been nice for a segment analyzing political ads…

This entire election cycle I haven't seen a single political ad online from the party I don't support. And so I think that speaks to the weakness of investing mostly in the Digital Ad space, where what we see is so curated to what the algorhythm thinks we want to see. TV's not like that at all, and so it seems TV still has the obvious edge in targeting voters that aren't already in your camp.

I get ads from both sides, Obama on one hand, and Trump on the other, ad nauseum (pun intended)

I get most of my ad exposure on youtube, and I see a mix. However, I would say what get is probably weighted towards the candidate I favor, which is not entirely surprising since I watch political content creators in that camp. I have targeted advertising disabled on youtube. By contrast the infuriating political text spam on my phone has been entirely from the opposing camp. (To be clear, I'd find it equally infuriating if it was from my favored camp. GTFO my phone.)

Have you guys noticed that the national prediction always matches Pennsylvania? As far as your model is concerned, This election comes down to who wins Pennsylvania. So disheartening.

In the Utah Senate debate this week an independent candidate who described himself as "the only pro-Trump candidate" criticized the Republican candidate for not endorsing Trump. In response the Republican candidate said he supports Trump when he is in line with Utah values, but pushes back when Trump is wrong.
In Utah it appears there's some controversy about aligning yourself with Trump still?

I’m interested in burnout within the Trump campaign. It’s been active now for about two years? That’s excessive, even for USA, and must be grueling for the poor staffers.

We Reps won't enjoy this as much as in 2016 because it won't be the same shattering shock to the Dem bubble. Those UA-cam meltdowns may never be matched again.

@@wa-bu3ke Bait again. The swing states will be won by both candidates, still a Harris win because of the keys to the WH model. Again the problem is congressional control determining if anything gets done which the current session is on of the worst in history.
