I'm excited for this book, its fits super well with my MTG campaign. As the forever DM I started a campaign in ravnica and then through a series of events trying to solve the mysteries of a new cult forming as an "11th guild" my players and the BBEG we're transported by a device that acts as a synthetic planeswalker medium. Problem is they cant control it, they're able to go home but when they use it trying to find where the villian went they go to a random plane. Theyve been to innistrad, Kamigawa, Zendikar, New Phyrexia and most recently Tarkir. After buying it think I'll use this plane as the final stop where my BBEG ended up when they separated. Get the Gods of theros involved and cause some interplanetary havoc. Might unlock the device and allow them to bring all their allies and friends from all the other planes to come help stop the BBEG. Also as far as the Oath of Glory being underpowered goes, Nothing a little homebrew cant fix.
The Oath of Glory feels more like a strongman to me than a traditional hero. It makes me want to run a campaign centered around the ancient Olympics, because that's where Glory would really shine. This is the kind of varsity frat bro who can win a chariot race on foot, while carrying the chariot AND horses, and casts Charm Person by flexing. His abs are his holy symbol and he worships at a shrine consisting of his high school championship trophies and a mirror. This dude is an absolute meathead, he knows it, he loves it, and he knows you love it too. This class plus the gladiator background (for performance proficiency) is a match made in heaven, and I can't wait to run this obnoxious narcissist in a future campaign.
Fun fact! Harps were not widely used in both medieval and ancient times, as they were often too cumbersome to move, too fragile and hard to make. Thus, you were more likely to find people playing a smaller version, which could be held and moved quite easily and which would open your Bard up to make all kinds of "You calling me a Lyre?" puns.
The Satyr being Fey with magic resistance is actually quite strong. Now hold/charm/dominate does not work as well as advantage on all spell saves. It makes them quite the threat against most caster style enemies, which I think comes up a bit more often over a campaign usually then a yuan-ti's poison immunity.
the pjo serie is still fun. i'm hyped for the tv serie. i do admit it lost a bit of it's charm. but the other series (the norse and egyptian ones) helped the author get back on track

My issue is, so spells like charm, hold and dominate(or really any spell only affecting humanoids) don’t affect satyrs right? Since they’re considered fey?

I've only seen the movie, never read the Percy Jackson books. Most of my Greek and Roman Mythology understanding comes from history, mythology, and literature classes. Besides various articles, documentaries, books, websites, etc. that I have consumed over the decades.
The Satyr really should have just been a Faun, there were already female Fauns (the Fauna) and it's still in the greco-roman myth as an origin, and Fauns were one of the more fun options from 3/3.5 from Dieties and Demigods
Yes, Satyrs and Centaurs are still fey, while the Minotaur is made Humanoid for some reason. Wizards, you made 2 races a creature type with more specific effects targeting it than monstrosity. Why is Fey okay but Monstrosity isn't?
I kinda hoped (I'm probably alone with this) that this expansion would bring about a hoplite subclass for the Fighter. I guess I'll just have to homebrew it. Question, does this book have anything on weapons? Antiquity weaponry was different from the generalized High Middle Ages stuff that was standardized for D&D.
The aura has synergy with find steed/greater find steed/haste/freedom of movement spells. Very mobile subclass features that build off base class features and spells. The small radius is very weird though. I think another bump to speed would have been a better fit. Or perhaps adding that creatures who start their turn and benefit from the speed boost also don’t provoke attacks of opportunity for the rest of that turn. The channel divinity is very versatile. Since it comes back on a short rest, it can potentially provide temp hitpoints to multiple creatures since temp hitpoints usually don’t reset until damaged or a long rest is taken. Could even just be used to keep your steed alive.
Honestly, it just needs a buff to the same range as the other Auras. 10 and 30 would make it fantastic, and as a dm I would house rule it the range anyway
Tristan Lawhorn Yea.. although it sits funny with me thinking about how insanely mobile this subclass can be, and that it’s basically so mobile that none of the other party members can even really benefit from the aura of your just gone out of everything else’s reach. Also the aura seems to be so small that while on your mound, you can’t even affect your other party members. This seems to be the case anyways when you think about a large mount taking up its space, and the player being on top of that space...
Who knew the biggest and strongest Demi god in Greek mythology is weaker than it looked! The Satyrs seemed like the equivalent of that one rich Fey at school who you’re actually ok friends with unlike the other snobby rich Fey.

In all honesty I did read the book, the twin kings is a neat story element as well as world building and it's a bit of open representation. At least explicitly written, I think they openly call them lovers. They sort of hinted into "alternative lifestyles" it in the Waterdeep book but I remember it feeling weak.
I was really disappointed by the Oath of Glory paladin. The Oath if Heroism really had the feel of a legendary hero chosen by the gods. Oath of Glory kinda just feels like a weird fighter.

C'mon, a Triton with darkvision makes sense. they live in the ocean and the ocean is a dark place. yeah a lot of races have darkvision. but a lot of races are rare and not often seen in most settings and a good dm should let this be reflected in what races they allow their players to pic, or at the very least ought to make a player roll percentiles. if they role low, they are one of the four most common races in the world. if they roll moderately, maybe something a bit less common, and if they roll high, something rarer and if they roll SUPER high, literally anything they want. but a party shouldnt be all of the freakiest, rarest races in the book traveling through barovia. they are gonna get angry mobbed the first step they take into any town.
I actually like the reprints. The reprinted races are fitting for the setting and not everybody has a thousand dollars to spend on buying every D&D book, so its nice that you have all you need for a theros adventure in one book.
Exactly I don’t want to buy Ravnica because I’m just not a fan of the setting but Theros seems really cool (yes I am the PJO nerd as mentioned at the start of the video) so the Minotaur and centaur will be to me brand new races. If it was a PHB race or even a VGtM race then I’d have some issues (technically tritons aren’t a reprint since the new ones have dark vision but I know that’s very nitpicky)
@@frankieramos1748 actually Tritons with night vision have been a common rule change. It just doesn't make sense. How would a Triton see underwater if they don't have dark vision? Plus a lot of the Triton abilities are very situational, so a buff is not out of place. Is like what happened to orcs, they were one of two races that had a negative, so they changed it in eberron
Cractor yeah I know people have home brewed dark vision on tritons which is a frankly stupid oversight probably in the vein of “we can just give EVERYONE dark vision” 100m down in the water and it is pitch black so any mildly deep ocean dweller needs dark vision just now they officially have it in a source book. Also not sure but I heard it changed the regular triton too on dnd beyond but not sure if that’s errata for VGtM or just because dndbeyond have made the decision to only show the new better triton. But yeah I don’t mind the “reprints” of these as they actually make a change that everyone already used so it can be AL legal now or if your DM is a tyrant against homebrew. If they had the tritons without dark vision in this then I would be complaining same if they had the orcs with the negatives in Ebberon but since there are slight changes I don’t mind
While I understand I do think it's cutting corners by just filling page space with stuff they already have printed at least they could've added/changed something to set Ravnica's centaurs and minotaurs from Theros's apart like eberron's orcs.
Honestly at this point poison is a joke. Practically every damn monster has resistance to it, if not outright immunity. Even for PCs, there are so many spells and items dedicated or partially dedicated to fucking over poison. (Heros Feast, Lesser Restoration and the Paladins lay on hands comes to mind). I think someone at Wizards just hates green dragons.
As others have said you can pick things from the PHB and then just ONE other book. Tbh I'd pick Guild of Ravnica because Guild Spells are bad ass. But then you miss other things you may want to play race wise.
also important to note that i dont think ravnica, wildemount and therefore likely theros too, are allowed at all in AL. And Eberron options are only legal when playing Eberron specific adventures.
I know it doesn’t come up much for people like us who buy all the books, but having all the races you need for a setting in the book for that setting is probably pretty useful for people who want to try it and aren’t made of money.
Yeah. Knowing what the "canom" races for a module are, but not being able to make them is a great way to get the good old Lizardman attorney to join the party.
And the fayth are their phylacteries. Now it makes sense why they built tedious, tooth-grinding puzzle dungeons around each one and shrouded even approaching one with superstition and taboo.
I've never personally met anyone who liked Theros & not Ravnica, but from a marketing/average buyer perspective I agree that it only makes sense to have them included in both books.
Mal Masterson you dont like guilds (my entire group who has enough money for the books) and you like Greek mythology. One guy buys all the books and I buy every player book. But the rest of my group is pickier, they like Theros and no ravnica. So I mean there are lots of reasons to buy one and not the other. Like your dm wants to run Greek fantasy and not ravnica.
Mal Masterson I don’t like Ravnica so I bought theros instead. I don’t like the whole guild spell and feat stuff tbh and the guilds aren’t interesting. And the whole steampunk thing is pretty cliche and overused at this point.

The trials dont hook me since I dont like the possible love interest but magnus is a good series and since annabeth is my favorite seeing her return to help her cousin is really interesting
Man, Magnus Chase was waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much wokebaiting. Trials of Apollo is gold, though. It's fun seeing a believably bisexual protagonist for once.
I couldn't really get invested in Trials, but Magnus Chase is probably my favorite of Riordan's series. It's sad that the spin-off series like Magnus Chase and especially Kane Chronicles don't get much love though
Mounted combat focused characters don't really work so well, due to a few issues. First one being that either they a) have a standard mount, which dies in one hit once you get to mid levels, or b) have a souped up mount that levels with them, which is usually overpowered, especially at low levels (like hello cavalier from pathfinder that starts with a heavy warhorse at level 1, which is more powerful than an entire 1st level party, and it levels with them). and second problem being that this is DUNGEONS and dragons, and mounted stuff tends to be really difficult to get value out of when your in narrow hallways in dungeons where your horse can barely fit.
@@Klaital1 There's also the strange thing in 5e where, RAW, a medium creature has to crawl around on their mount to pick their square. Also, by default, you can't actually do a good old cavalry charge, since your mount is usually taking a seperate turn from you, meaning you can't just walk up and attack, you have to ready an attack on your turn after crawling to the right space of your mount, walk up, then use your readied attack, meaning only one attack, and no other reaction that turn. On the other hand, Kobolds on mounts get Advantage on everything, or at least are constantly cancelling disadvantage, and can carry a pack of dire corgis to ride on to replace all of the inevitable casualties.
The old Star Wars Revised Splat books did a great job of giving you a few fun adventure hooks for every planet or city they talked about. This ended up being one of my favorite parts of those books.

I really love Theros. It’s such a cool world, I love the gods and the lore, and all the crazy nonsense. We finally have a setting that encourages DM’s and players to make an all out crazy heroes versus godly monsters campaign where it doesn’t matter how crazy strong the players are, because that’s the point. Ok, but seriously. It’s an awesome setting. I’d love to run a Theros campaign for my players.
I could see a dex based oath of Ancient's Paladin and really laying into the magic resistance ability. Plus it would provide a naturey feeling build option that uses the Saters stat buffs. Also I'm suprized that the oath of glory paladin subclass didn't really lean into the whole folly of arrogance deal that Greek heroes were so famous for... Except Hercules who was apparently more wrath... Eh, he was always more of a barbarian anyways.

Also not sure but I heard it changed the regular triton too on dnd beyond but not sure if that’s errata for VGtM or just because dndbeyond have made the decision to only show the new better triton. But yeah I don’t mind the “reprints” of these as they actually make a change that everyone already used so it can be AL legal now or if your DM is a tyrant against homebrew. If they had the tritons without dark vision in this then I would be complaining same if they had the orcs with the negatives in Ebberon but since there are slight changes I don’t mind
While I understand I do think it's cutting corners by just filling page space with stuff they already have printed at least they could've added/changed something to set Ravnica's centaurs and minotaurs from Theros's apart like eberron's orcs.

Honestly at this point poison is a joke. Practically every damn monster has resistance to it, if not outright immunity. Even for PCs, there are so many spells and items dedicated or partially dedicated to fucking over poison. (Heros Feast, Lesser Restoration and the Paladins lay on hands comes to mind). I think someone at Wizards just hates green dragons.

As others have said you can pick things from the PHB and then just ONE other book. Tbh I'd pick Guild of Ravnica because Guild Spells are bad ass. But then you miss other things you may want to play race wise.
also important to note that i dont think ravnica, wildemount and therefore likely theros too, are allowed at all in AL. And Eberron options are only legal when playing Eberron specific adventures.

I know it doesn’t come up much for people like us who buy all the books, but having all the races you need for a setting in the book for that setting is probably pretty useful for people who want to try it and aren’t made of money.

When you realise the Aeons are all technically liches, FFX becomes one of the most compelling settings
And the fayth are their phylacteries. Now it makes sense why they built tedious, tooth-grinding puzzle dungeons around each one and shrouded even approaching one with superstition and taboo.

I've never personally met anyone who liked Theros & not Ravnica, but from a marketing/average buyer perspective I agree that it only makes sense to have them included in both books.
Mal Masterson you dont like guilds (my entire group who has enough money for the books) and you like Greek mythology. One guy buys all the books and I buy every player book. But the rest of my group is pickier, they like Theros and no ravnica.
So I mean there are lots of reasons to buy one and not the other.
Like your dm wants to run Greek fantasy and not ravnica.

Mal Masterson I don’t like Ravnica so I bought theros instead. I don’t like the whole guild spell and feat stuff tbh and the guilds aren’t interesting. And the whole steampunk thing is pretty cliche and overused at this point.

Eh, House of Hades was my favorite. Blood of Olympus I didn’t care for, but I love Magnus Chase and Trials of Apollo, so, eh.
The trials dont hook me since I dont like the possible love interest but magnus is a good series and since annabeth is my favorite seeing her return to help her cousin is really interesting
Man, Magnus Chase was waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much wokebaiting. Trials of Apollo is gold, though. It's fun seeing a believably bisexual protagonist for once.

I couldn't really get invested in Trials, but Magnus Chase is probably my favorite of Riordan's series. It's sad that the spin-off series like Magnus Chase and especially Kane Chronicles don't get much love though

Mounted combat focused characters don't really work so well, due to a few issues. First one being that either they a) have a standard mount, which dies in one hit once you get to mid levels, or b) have a souped up mount that levels with them, which is usually overpowered, especially at low levels (like hello cavalier from pathfinder that starts with a heavy warhorse at level 1, which is more powerful than an entire 1st level party, and it levels with them). and second problem being that this is DUNGEONS and dragons, and mounted stuff tends to be really difficult to get value out of when your in narrow hallways in dungeons where your horse can barely fit.

There's also the strange thing in 5e where, RAW, a medium creature has to crawl around on their mount to pick their square.
Also, by default, you can't actually do a good old cavalry charge, since your mount is usually taking a seperate turn from you, meaning you can't just walk up and attack, you have to ready an attack on your turn after crawling to the right space of your mount, walk up, then use your readied attack, meaning only one attack, and no other reaction that turn.
On the other hand, Kobolds on mounts get Advantage on everything, or at least are constantly cancelling disadvantage, and can carry a pack of dire corgis to ride on to replace all of the inevitable casualties.
The old Star Wars Revised Splat books did a great job of giving you a few fun adventure hooks for every planet or city they talked about. This ended up being one of my favorite parts of those books.

I really love Theros. It’s such a cool world, I love the gods and the lore, and all the crazy nonsense. We finally have a setting that encourages DM’s and players to make an all out crazy heroes versus godly monsters campaign where it doesn’t matter how crazy strong the players are, because that’s the point.
Ok, but seriously. It’s an awesome setting. I’d love to run a Theros campaign for my players.

Ravnica was released well over 10 years ago lul. I remember buying my first magic set from Ravnica.
I could see a dex based oath of Ancient's Paladin and really laying into the magic resistance ability. Plus it would provide a naturey feeling build option that uses the Saters stat buffs.
Also I'm suprized that the oath of glory paladin subclass didn't really lean into the whole folly of arrogance deal that Greek heroes were so famous for... Except Hercules who was apparently more wrath... Eh, he was always more of a barbarian anyways.
