- Martha Karambu Koome, born on June 3, 1960, in Kithiu village, Meru County, Kenya, is a distinguished advocate and jurist who made history as the first female Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of Kenya. Raised in a polygamous family of 18 children by peasant farmers, Koome's early life was rooted in modest beginnings.
She pursued her legal education at the University of Nairobi, obtaining a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree in 1986. Following her undergraduate studies, Koome attended the Kenya School of Law and was admitted to the bar in 1987. Demonstrating a commitment to furthering her legal expertise, she earned a Master of Laws (LL.M) in Public International Law from the University of London in 2010.
Koome's legal career commenced as an associate at Mathenge and Muchemi Advocates. In 1993, she established her own law firm, Martha Koome & Company Advocates, where she served as the managing partner until 2003.
