You’re so brave! One thing people need to keep in mind would to NOT have hair products in if they wanted to do it! Hairspray is especially flammable!product free hair only!
This comment needs to be upvoted!
I dont use hair product so it didnt even occure to me, but youre absolutely right, product-free hair only, otherwise this might end badly.
That was my first thought!!! I was so scared thinking just how badly this could go 💀💀💀
I think as long as you aren't spraying hair spray into an open flame you can be sure your hair isn't going go up in flames. Especially if you put hairspray on the night before the alcohol that makes it flammable is completely gone. It's probably not even higher than 50%.
Anyone else remember like 7-ish years ago when she never used heat on her hair and now she's literally setting it on fire 😂
Alternate title: “Lucy Being Braver Than Everyone for 10 Whole Minutes”
@Ryan V. Hahaha so did I at first - gotta read those descriptions my friend!
I'm Brazilian and singeing/cutting split ends is still a thing here (I think it's because Brazilian women really love ultra long hair). Some people do it at home and some do it at the salon (there are some hair styling equipment that cut the split ends now too). When I had very long hair (it fell down to my hips) I'd do it once a week (using the scissor/cutting version) and it really helped with the split ends. Now I don't do it since I don't have split ends anymore. I'd recommend the cutting version but not the singeing version since hair catches fire really easily and also the heat would probably damage the hair too. ''Fun'' fact: Some strict churches that proihibit women from cutting ther hair consider singeing as cutting and therefore, sinful too.
I hadn't even thought about singing as a workaround of religious doctrine. Like how at one point the Catholic church considered beaver fish for lent bc it was aquatic. I mean, you say the singing doesn't get through but it'd be funny if that was accepted in some places
@@CalindaSharisse It passes for some Pentecostal churches because you're not actually cutting it.
Here in Argentina we did it a lot in the 90s!
I think it's a latinoamerican thing... that comes from great grandmas that left Europe or something haha.
Like pasta, or grandmas over feeding us haha.
Hugs!
I remember girls doing this at school with matches when I lived in France. They said they would save money and avoid needing the hairdresser. That was about 40 years ago!!
I am from Brittany in France and it's not that unusual here! My grand'ma and her sisters used to do it when they were young in the 40's and i do it sometimes too! Singeing is one of the best care for long hair so you have to trim it all to remove splited ends... Now few tips for those who want to try:
- Make SURE all the windows and doors around you are closed!
- Make SURE your hair is free from any hair product containing alcools or oils.
- As Lucy said, you don't have to touch your hair with the fire!! just approach slowly with the flame as close as necessary.
- I personally prefer to use a lighter so you have a better control and you can keep it in your hand!
- You can cauterize the end of the hair section approaching the flame slowly.
I hope you try it with your all hair :D!
OMG i just googled Britanny, and I'm amazed at the landscapes and towns.
I was going to travel this year to Europe, but well, we all know what happened...
I know everyone goes to the main places in Paris, but I'm crazy about French little villages and towns.
I know there's Strasbourg more at the south, but also one called Eze which is one of the most beautiful places I've seen that I'd like to go.
I've been searching on Google maps a few Beautiful villages in your county, and i remember saving one, but if you have any to recommend, I'd appreciate it! 💜
Hugs from Buenos Aires!
I'm French and in the area where I live nobody ever do this (neither in the South....)
Une autre paire de manches I half grew up in Brittany! My parents were doing up a run down house beside a farm but they divorced and it barely gets visited anymore.
][\/][elina• if you like beautiful landscapes, you have to go to Brittany but also in Provence ! There are beautiful mountains (the Alps) and it’s in the south so there’s de sea near, so it’s varied. Search Alpes de haute Provence on internet, you won’t be disappointed!
A few years ago I would have tried this I wasn't very attached to my hair, but what can I say... its grown on me
The change in expression between the first try and the second is fascinating.
Lucy: *lights her hair on fire* "Woops!" 😂
ICONIC 😂😂😂
Vaguely reminds me of this wood burning class I took when I was 15, the girl that sat across from me would often singe bits of her bangs/fringe on accident, and I’d just look up from my piece to see her cutting off yet *another* piece of burnt hair with a disgruntled look on her face 😅
(poor thing, she was nice, I hope she’s doing well)
That is the cutest thing I've ever heard! It belongs in a children's novel!
Willa Bukata woodshop. You learn different things like wood burning and easy carpentry.
My friend tried this on bleached hair. DON'T
So wait until your hair is sufficiently long before going for the Sephiroth look
Got it
This was a little horrifying to watch, but I’m so curious about the long term effects of this. An update would be really cool! Kinda want Brad Mondo to react to this 😂
I would fear more long term damage would be incurred by burning the hair with fire than just being super gentle with your hair and regular light trims. If you have tons of split ends, you're too rough with it.
Hazeleyeartist I always have heaps of split ends, but I’m so careful with my hair and I do as much as I can to protect it. I don’t know what’s going wrong
Hazeleyeartist I have straight hair but there are people with curly and coily hair who struggle with avoiding split ends and it’s more than just dnt b ruff wiv ur hare
My hairdresser always uses heated scissors for my hair! I never thought of it as the same as what you're doing here but it definitely is. My hairdresser told me the main advantage is that the protein in the hair "hardens" or something like that and that will prevent split ends. My hair always feels amazing after I get it cut and it stays that way for longer.
Beauty community: on fire
Lucy: I'm gonna set my hair on 🔥.
‘I might be about to do something absolutely stupid’
Me: *interest peaks*
i’ve only seen this done on dreadlocks, never seen it done on different textured hair so that was interesting.
Greetings from Greece!I have had this done a number of times on my ultra long hair many years ago, although I don't think it is common in Greece. My hair was down to my hips then and the process was a bit tedious but it was worth it!The hairdresser told me back then that the twisting lets the split ends fly while protecting the healthy hair. She didn't hold the candle for long at one place, rather running it up and down the hair piece.I remember the sound and the smell which where kind of worrying but my hair was lovely and soft after that!
Presumably the idea is that tightly twisting the section reduces the amount of oxygen in contact with the main strand of hair, while the splits have more. Similarly to the way a piece of string burns more easily at the end than if you try to light the middle?
Some salons here in Russia offer so called “hot scissors”. The idea is basically the same except it’s safer cause you aren’t dealing with an open fire. Don’t know if it works actually
It is easier and cheaper to do search and destroy at home with a pair of hair scissors. I just did it today.
In the original Willy Wonka, the hairdressers did this to the actress who played bratty Veruca Salt. Because of the order of filming, her hair is different lengths throughout the film!
She's so pretty.
This just popped into my notifications and I knew just from the title I had to watch before going to sleep 😂
The anxiety when she holds the flame to her hair for the first time
You’re brave girl 😂❤️ I’d be terrified to try that with my hair lol.
I'd love an update on this! Seems like it might be one of those hidden gems if you don't burn off your hair in the process 😂
im scared
I always love it when you try these old hair tutorials ❤
And yes I liked the video before watching the whole thing 😊
Omg I was so scared that your hair would catch on fire!! I would love to maybe see a follow up video in the future!
Oh my goodness! You randomly showed up in my recommendations and now i remember you’re the person who taught me how to do a sock bun when I was 13/14 x)
This hair is on fireeeeee 🔥🔥🔥
While I was watching this, all I could think was 'Girl, noooooo! Not your beautiful hair!!!" 😱
Glad it turned out okay, but you had me worried there!
I used to do this as a kid. I hated how the hairs would come out of the pigtail and dutch braids. I would sneak outside and do this with a lighter. lol
9:20 the 'fluffy' texture might just come from the shampoo made of (among other things) eggs. Bernadette Banner did a video on it ("I tried a real Edwardian haircare routine" or something like that
hi random person, do you know by chance if youtube as a whole is having a mobile search glitch where it only shows you playlists or if this is my personal hell? 😹realized it when i just went looking for that Bernadette vid. literally cant look up anything💀
Hello, I just checked and I don't have it, (sorry) but here's the link if you want to watch the video m.ua-cam.com/video/oek7W5IRAdg/v-deo.html (hope that helped:)
I saw that video -- it looked like such a mess, but her hair looked great afterward. Being a germaphobe, I can't imagine ever being comfortable with having raw egg in my hair, but more power to the folks who don't mind!
There was a while when I washed my hair with egg, and it did indeed give volume.
I haven't even done search and destroy on my hair in a couple of years. I've just been letting it grow..thanks for the reminder
Once I accidentally caught my ends on fire via a candle, I washed it many times and it took AGES (okay it probably only took a total of six washes, the first shower after I burnt my hair, I shampooed it about four times) for the sulfur smell to leave lmao
There used to be a salon in NYC that catered to long hair. The stylists would stand on stools so that they could reach the ends of the hair when it was lifted up for trimming. They also had a hair artist who was trained in candling hair. Not a skill us pixie-haired girls will ever need lol.
That sounds amazing! Any time I go to get my hair cut it's usually me doing the standing up so they can reach the ends XD
@@tinyandcharming i have shoulder length hair and one woman. (Friend of mom. Been to a salon once) explained to me that it is so they can see how it falls. Having you stand up makes you higher thus they can more easily cut lower plus better view. I assume in that salon they use stools so they can hold the hair up and be even higher than if you just were to sit in a stool. Since especially for layers some hold the hair above you to cut em. Makinh the layers even and since the bottom has to travel further. And when down the top has to travel further. You can get real nice "layers" (since no one wants actual layers)
You standing up has a different reason than them on a stool. It's great if a hairdresser is comftorble with asking you to stand up. They could possibly while you sat. (Unless like it can only lay on you.) It just ensures you will get the best result possible. It typically only is at the end. To make sure it actually falls straight.
I've been curious about Victorian hair singeing for so long and it was wonderful to see this video! Thank you so much! Please do the update 🙂
Wow when your hair cached fire I panicked for a moment! Very brave thing to do! I don't think I'll burn mine with a candle (we only have those Christmas ones at home an I think they would be kind of dangerous) but I feel highly tempted to get some of those heated scissors.....
I would LOVE to see how continuous use of this technique compares to cutting the hair! Thank you for being brave and showing us how this works! I've never heard of this technique but am intrigued now!!
I like how she is apprehensive at the beginning of the vid, intrigued in the middle and almost playing by the end.
Hello! I have no idea if you will see this message or not but if you do I think that you will find this quite educational. I am a textile designer with a reasonably vast knowledge about fibers. Wool was and is used in many flame retardant (note NOT FLAME PROOF) textiles. And since your hair is composed of the same material with the only real difference being the molecular structure, this resistance to fore would be the same as for wool. When wool catches fire, it will first flame up and then it will quite quickly go out again as the flame essentially suffocates from the material. When you twist your hair, the fire is deprived of oxygen in the piece of hair, thus it can most easily only access the bits sticking out. I hope that you found this interesting enough to add up for the long read! 😊
Your bangs look so cute
I just heard this method from my 94 years old! Client after I compliment her hair she told me since she did singing her hair in her young age her hair grew crazy healthy 😮
Something new I learned today!
Think I'll do some Search and Destroy later instead haha. Very brave to try so we don't have to. Just the smell alone though...
I remember you & I'm glad that you're still around.
You are sooo brave !!!
Seeing the thumbnail and immediately starting the video.. I had so many questions
My hair is very similar in texture to yours and my split ends have split ends. I tried this once and I thought I was going to end up like Anakin Skywalker. But then I held the flame directly to the split hairs. There's a part of me that would like to try it again properly but not without taking out a fire insurance policy on myself first.
i’ve been curious about this for years and about two minutes in you have me looking for a candle. i’ve been enabled
Please link us to the interview with the 💃🏼opera🎼singer! We would like to see Edwardian/Victorian primary sources too!
I didn't know there was a thing called singeing. After watching this video, I am terrified. I am surprised your hair didn't catch fire. This is one thing I know I won't try no matter what. I do appreciate your efforts anyhow. I loved the video even though I was terrified for you throughout the process. I love your channel. You always create very refreshing content.
This is the first video of yours I'm seeing, and tbh I thought this was going to be clickbait but sis you DID NOT DISSAPOINT 👏🏻
This video makes me want to burn my split ends. I read about how they do it in Brazil, and they wet the hair before twisting it and that makes a lot more sense. I think I'm going to try one strand at a time.
I kept expecting you to catch on fire. That was so stressful. But this is dedication! Just subscribed
Goodness, Lucy ,so brave . Awesome!
The “wooly “ or cotton-like look of women’s hair during this era, you mentioned in this video, was caused by heated appliances used on their hair, such as curing irons heated without electricity. Hair will burn in a controlled manner when it is twisted and not held in an open flame. If the hair is loose and put very close to a heat source it will burn. Believe me, I know. My hair is 77” long and I got too close to an electric wall heater. I lost 5” of hair before I realized what was happening and put it out.
I used to do this on my thigh length hair. It works really well.
I saw the thumbnail and my eyes almost popped out of my head. You’re a brave woman omg
I like your voice, it's somewhat soothing.
My grandma was born in 1902 and when I was little she used to do this to my hair she said to prevent split ends.
Would love to see the outcome of frequently doing this!
Super interessant dit haha wist ik niet! Ben blij dat je je haren er niet af hebt gebrandt want ze zijn erg mooi! :D Thank you for the upload! :) Liefs
First one. Hi leopsie. ❤️❤️been watching ur channel for many year. Love ur hair styling vedios 😍
Thank you for doing this so I don't have to. 😁
I love to watch your vintage / antique videos. This was so interesting! You're very brave - I honestly wouldn't dare to try this.
If you decide to continue experimenting with this technique, I'd love to see an update in the future!
Hair, like wool or other natural fibres, is naturally fire resistant, and wont stay burning once the heat source is gone. Its one way you can differentiate between natural and synthetic fibres. That's why it doesn't just catch all your hair on fire!
I confess I was terrified throughout the video, I'll stick to the scissors! I used to burn the tips of my hair when I was a young teen (and a micro pyromaniac) but never with any productive end in mind LOL I wonder how many accidents happened in the early 20th century because of this practice (or ever today for that matter).
I heard some VS models talking about this a few years ago, but when I researched I couldn't find a reliable resource of how to do it. Now I want to give it a try (I usually do this with the scissors)
Brad mondo needs to see this!
As a kid I used to singe my hair for fun! Had no idea it was a thing other people did! Great vid loepsie 💚
Hair singeing was popular briefly in the early 1970s. I had a friend in college who had it done regularly. She had beautiful hair.
My braider and my mom use to do this with my hair when I was younger, we used a lighter. Now its just dipping in hot water!
People really did think of everything 😄
I'm from Turkey and I've NEVER met anyone who done it or would do it
Here in Brazil we have the habit of keeping our hair very long and instead of chopping off a big chunk of hair, some girls prefer to section the hair and cut every split end separately (myself included). It actually takes a hella long time though, but I consider the process to be quite therapeutic when doing this to oneself. Anyway, to anyone who's interested in having long hair, I really recommend doing this instead of cutting everything off!
It won't "seal" the ends. Heat breaks bonds in your hair... so it will just leave your ends more susceptible to breaking.
That is so interesting. Can’t wait to see an update.
I’ve been super curious about this practice, so this was highly amusing. 😁
I don't know if there are many hairdressers in the Netherlands that do the cutting with heat but mine does and it makes a world of difference. Normally I get split ends after 1 to 2 months but when I get it cut with the heated scissors I don't have any split ends or breakage for 5 to 6 months so my hair can grow much faster. So I would recommend singing if you want to grow your hair and keep it healthy :)
I love all the disclaimers, because I immediately thought about trying it myself 😆
that looks weirdly addictive...
Watching Lucy play with her hair and fire is hilarious
You should try this on only one side of your head for 6 months and then make a video comparing the two sides of hair!!! 🤩
Other than the danger part, and the "sealing the ends" part which we dont' know if that's what is actually happening, you can achieve the same "seek and destroy" method by using the Splitender Pro device that GraveyardGirl recently did a vid on.
I wouldn't be able to stand the smell. Thanks for showing how to do this.
I always saw my hairdresser doing that in the salon, in Brazil. I’ve never done it, but my cousin used to do and it looked amazing.
So according to my mum my great grandma used to do this to my mum as a child and my mum hated it soooooo much
Wow! You are so brave! And so gorgeous by the way! I subscribed immediately!
I would love to see the results if you decide to do your whole hair like that😍🙈
1:48 It definitely SPARKED your interest. 🤣🤪
Alessandra Ambrosio, a famous brazilian model (known from Victoria Secret) supposedly likes this treatment. I think it's terrifying.
Have you ever tried singing? You have such a deep rich voice, I would love to hear you sing.
I look forward to seeing an update on this!
OB MY GOD I AM SO EARLY!! I love you lucy 💖 also you got some COURAGE bruh i could never do thid
My grandmother used to do this to my hair and my hair was past my butt and it was the healthiest ever. Had no idea other people did it especially not so far back in history
You’re so brave
I'd be lying if i wasn't holding my breath while you were doing this. Glad nothing wrong happened, really enjoyed the video!
For anyone curious about the Edwardian interview, I published the whole thing on my blog a while back 😄 loepsie.com/2020/06/hair-care-tips-from-an-edwardian-rapunzel/
Just wanted to ask that xd
