- Speakers: Bose 901 Serie IV + Active Equalizer Bose (1978 - 1983)
Turntable: Thorens TD145 MK2 (1976 - 1978)
Amplifier: Receiver Sony STR-5800 (1976 - 1978)
CD Player: Philips CD300 (1983)
Camera: Iphone 5 SE
The Original setup (Thorens TD145 Mk2 + Sony STR-5800 + Bose 901 Serie IV) cost me 400€.
Keep also in mind the Size of the Room (25 m2 in the Attic) and the really bad quality of the Camera (Iphone SE first Generation 2016).
With the same setup, I did some most recent Video with a Canon EOS 70D Camera and the Sound is much better (Sony CDP-101, Sony D-700, Sony PS-X65 on my Video List).
This Room is only for material testing and Vintage object's Collection. See the video with the Westlake Audio TM-2 Speakers to appreciate my Main Setup in the Living Room.
These sprekers are pure genius work.
in 1994 I had a choice, the Bose 901's or the 10.2. I went with the 10.2 and never regretted it. Had them for over 20 yrs. I had a best friend who had the 901's so I got to hear them a lot, still prefer the 10.2.
I was just thinkin of my best summer ever .... it was in 90 and here I am 20 minutes later on UA-cam....just clicking by a mistake and then this videao comes up....That summer, smokin a spliff turning on my 905 and Pink Floyd. Connected with Luxmann and Rega Planar 3, holding hands with the girl of the town and my Suzuki GSX 750 outside.... Waaaooo....a bit scary that I by accident now sits and s´watch this...is there really a God, or still pure coinsidence????!!!!!
Despite the fact that some people Bose bash I have to say I quite liked the sound of the Series II’s back in the day. I liked the clean spacious sound of their bass and mid range. Perhaps the treble sounded a bit harsh but not too bad if they weren’t cranked too much. I don’t know if their ported design sounded as good (they were certainly more efficient though).
I own two of those beautiful Philips/ Magnavox Cd players 😊
Hi Kyle,
Thanks for your Comment. Indeed Philips CD300 is really a Masterpiece for CD Player Collector, even if my favorite stay CD100.
Couldn't get a decent sound stage out of my series IV. Good Party Speakers. except mine seemed a lil shy in the power power handling department, Sold mine after about a year of trying desperately to get a soundstage. Man I tried everything.
those speakers are supposed to be 12" to 18 " away from the wall. But you are lucky to have them big time. Love the music
Probably it's not visible on the video but the back wall is not vertical. The Room is in the Attic, the Wall is slighty inclined, following the slope of the Roof. Maybe it could explain why the Sound still great with less distance.
Look at my last video with the CD100 Philips CD Player, the Room design has been reviewed. Behind the speakers the Space is free and distance between speakers has been increased
Nice one!!
Hi Thomas,
Thanks for your comment.
The Video was made with my old Iphone 5SE. Give a look on the Sony CDP-101 CD Player video, recorded with my Canon EOS 70D Camera and you'll find even better sound quality.
Sound even better when set up properly. Don't point them into a corner. I posted a video of my Series VI being powered by a 1979 Bose Spatial Control Receiver with close to ideal placement.
See my answer to Troy's Post just above, thanks for watching
Я бы хотел оказаться здесь...
Coucou Tonio, superbe album !
Do these speakers sound good when playing cds?
Hi William,
The Video was made with my old Iphone 5SE. Give a look on the Sony CDP-101 CD Player video, recorded with my Canon EOS 70D Camera and you'll hear the difference !!!
@@toniohifivintage537 I only ask because I inherited 2 sets of these from my father, one set is black and the other brown. I'm going to hook them up when I get the free time so I hope they sound good as I have tons of cds.
No amount of equalization will get bass out of a four inch speaker. Also trying to reproduce a relatively flat 20 hz to 20khz frequency range at over 100db from a four inch is impossible and results are total distortion at every frequency.
Hi Albert,
So, what are you trying to say ? There is hundred of speaker's type for hundred of use ... I repeat again, Bose 901 sound is not a natural sound but it is very impressive, especially if the room is not too big, because I find them tiring at high volume.
But to be honest, if I install my Westlake (2x 15") in my little listening room instead of the living room, not sure the result will be better ☹
Just enjoy the Music and don't be so harsh in your reviews/comments.
sir,nice steup
Basically 9 car speakers in a cabinet eq to death and a very good marketing team. Never did care for the sound. Loud is cheap you can irritate the hell out someone with a clock radio.
First the 901 are too far from wall, bad set up 18 inch is all you need, cut back the glassy sound, on turntable always close the dust cover, keep the tonearm sound pick
Hi Richard,
See my answer to Troy's Post just above. Actual set up is 40 cms from the Wall (~16"). This System is really a secondary System, mainly used for CD Player's test. See my last video with Marantz CD-63B.
Dont blame the speakers it is the rest of his rig low end no horsepower
I have an extra eq
@sc762 has 1/4 inch jacks...
Suena totalmente apagado sin dinamica le falta musculo sonido anemico!
It sounds terrible...sorry! As Bose always does...and it is no hi end for shure.
Actually it doesn't. Keep in mind that he's using his camera's microphone which isn't that good. If you record these speakers with properly placed condenser microphones, you'll see that it doesn't sound bad at all. There are far worse sounding speakers out there that can't handle high SPLs like the 901s can.
@@revokdaryl1 Thanks for your answer, but I have sold Bose speaker range in the 70's and what I wrote is my personel believe, it's just a opinion.
And if you know wat's inside de speakersset 901 and the EQ and how it's bild you would agree that it is bad...sorry. 😇
Hi Theo,
I fully disagree with you. For sure, it is not a "natural" sound, like the Westlake TM-2 in my living room but you cannot say that it is a terrible sound.
Listen to my latest video with the Sony PS-X65 Turntable and the same Vinyl. You should have a different feeling. There is very few speakers I wish to keep and I owned a lot of ... But Bose 901 are on my List, not because they are the best but because they are different ... and because they fit to my Room !!!
The video with the Sony CDP-101 CD Player is also excellent, using the Canon EOS 70D Camera !!!
@@toniohifivintage537 Good lord, how much did those Westlake speakers set you back??? I imagine they sound as exquisite as they look.
