It changed my life too. Now I am nomad and make a living making movies. It all comes back to this video, when I saw it in 2011. It is not an understatement to say : life changing !

You have to be hands on, your passion will drive you.. if you truly want to do something, you’ll find a way regardless. You don’t need all the fancy tech, you just need something that records video.. and work from there, hands on is the best experience you can get; you’ll learn on the way making mistakes.
I'm 23 rn and entering my last year of film school. Will try to have this in mind. If anyone finds this comment down the road (a year, 3 years, 30 years) ask me how it went and I'll tell you lol.
i needed to see this, Im trying to be a film maker.. have been for a few years, it can get very discouraging at times, Ive read both his books like 3 times each and always inspires me again.. but I havent had time.. so running into this and watching it.. inspires again.. man.. I need to get on the grind..
Beautiful, in 10 minutes RR breaks down what is REALLY MEANS to be a filmmaker... making film any way, any place, anytime, anyhow.. and then Entertain people.
Great advice, and I can see much of it being applicable far beyond filmmaking. Your fiance would like an expensive ring? Don't get it. It's too nice and it's just money. Make her a ring. Even if it's just yarn, you made it, that's love. I'm being only partly facetious but, you get the idea.
Car is the biggest one. You need a dependable vehicle with 4 wheels that runs on gas? Go get one. Lots of people want a fancy car, buy their old one. Encourage them to upgrade so you can swoop in on their vanity and get a deal.
@@clutchpowers3229 i often told by my peers that i need more equipment, more crews and more money to make film. But i have made multiple short films that i can be proud of, mostly extremely low budget with basic equipment and few friends. I'll say passion is the most important.
yeah for done 25 years ago the business and tech has changes sooo muchmillinilas ad gen z are shooting on phones fior god sake but no nitro has been dropprd yet in terms of a story and low budget film im 49 this was done for my generation x but some of things he says are still relevant in 2021 go out their and do it film school is scam
Robert you need to make the movie detailing the baddest, most Chingon Texan of all time! And, that man is MSG Roy P Benavidez, of the Green Berets. Hollywood will never take his Medal of Honor story UNLESS you make it.
its 2021 tech is even cheaper people do crap on their phones but you have millions doing films but no one has done anything special a piece of nitro reservoir dogs like tarantino said or el mariachi?
He nailed it when he said you are either born creative or you are not. You can learn technical. So many people go the technical route with films and formulas but no one is creative or films from their soul anymore. Even Robert Rodriguez's films got progressively worse (loved Sin Citys) once he took the $$$ and made the spy kids films (which were technically good but not from a creative/soulful place).
they did... but I felt like technically they were all GREAT films, but he wasn't channeling his soul or creativity anymore... more like visual masturbating and formulaic processes became more front and center.
I know he is a good filmaker but this video is so EDGY. In film you cant break the Rules if you dont know the rules First. Acording to Robert Rodriguez I make movies like every one else because i went to a film school. Nice !
@@souldiving4197 who says i won't help me ? Did you read my comment at all ? Acording to Robert i make generic movies because I got an education and i know what I'm doing don't you think that line of thinking is flawed and stupid. @@souldiving4197 I think you both miss the point of RR statements. He is telling poor filmmakers that they should skip film school because it will cost them 20000. I am an independent film maker working on my first movie and its really hard when I dont know any of the rules or what I am doing. If I had 20,000$ I would go to a good film school and get that education. The route I am taking is way harder and way more expensive but I have creative freedom because I am making it myself and if I succeed will make the most profit. As film makers we shouldnt look down at each other because of our background and how we got to making movies.

Whats your dept.? How'd you do it?? I'm stuck directing commercial and industrial film :(
I found it in 2023 😃
“Hollywood is full of sharks. You need a shark working for you” that sounded way cooler than it probably is
This guy is the definition of awsome! Going to write and direct a 10 min movie and he just fired 🔥me up!
I added this to my "September 2023 Playlist RF ".
I still love the original guitar performance .
this just changed my life.. tyrr (thank you robert rodriguez)

His first 10 minute cooking school jumpstarted my culinary journey
I challenge everyone who watches this to write, shoot and edit a finished mini movie today. You have a cell phone you can do it.
Many, many years later and still, this is the best lesson for any filmmaker. Gracias.

That’s bad ass advice . You are a filmmaker 👍🏻🥃
He right... you are the filmmaker. Love this video... great tips from Robert and yes I had read his books too.

Mr Rodriguez I'm big fan of yours, and I know all of your films
I love Rob Rod. He’s been my favorite and inspiration for a decade and I’m finally going to do it. Him and Wes Craven
Hey, I am in the FB group. I just subbed and I think this video is awesome and needs to be remade. Lets do it!
Believe me, this was ahead of it's time 😢
Mate I wish I've seen this 10 years ago. Would of saved me a while of of time, money and a whole lot of bother.

Saw your comment and was wondering what specifically do the people disagree about.

Is the cameraman for this on speed?
Great!!! The lessons pertain to today even more be creative be different different sells
Pretty sure Desperado is a sequel to El Mariachi, not a remake. Did I miss something?

I want to share this with young students, but the violence is an issue. Is there a version without the cutaway "shots"?

question: the intro says "From Dusk Till Dawn opens in may" so i must ben from 96, but the credits for the short say 93, what up with that

Also act.
We need more actors that are good at acting rather than looks.
