- After the original video I decided to answer some more questions and show some examples. Many of you had points that needed clarifying and here's the video about the Leica D-Lux 8.

Very interested in trying this camera out, this was a super helpful video! Thanks for that. 👊🏻
Glad it was helpful! Take care
So, it is the same as the Dlux-7, and I was expecting an upgrade on the D-lux8. Oh well, I will wait for the D-Lux 9 :) - thank you for the review.
Sure thing! Take care
The difference in the 9 will be that it'll say 9 on it.
Hahaha Sure thing - or Made in Wetzlar hahaha
Leica’s squeezed out all the toothpaste out of the tube, don’t see how they can make it better without a new Panasonic LX body
Pretty bad first six months for cameras. First X-T50 (a stripped-down X-t5), then the Lumix S9 (a stripped down S5II) and now the D-Lux8 (a rebodied camera from 2018). All of them over $1499.
Agreed, an already saturated market trying to push “new” cameras to customers, pretty sad!
Interestingly true I must say... lot's going on everywhere!
I was hoping to get a replacement for my E-P7, it's my second camera. Unfortunately, this new batch of "compact" cameras aren't much better,
This has got to be one of the most bizarre model upgrades after so long we've ever seen eh? Language barrier at the roundtable discussion on what new features to include? Lol. I'd still love to own one and the photos are Leica-y, but at the same time it makes me feel icky to give them my money and show them they can get away with not even trying to compete with x100vi and such 😂.
Really appreciate the videos and info, you seem to be the only one with one in hand right now. If anything I'd love to just see more photos in different environments or video on a tripod indoors as if filming for UA-cam etc. Thanks again!
Thanks for the feedback mate! I hear you on the upgrade
Thanks for answering my question. Decent video and audio, but the lack of IBIS makes it too jittery when walking. DJI OSMO 3 is a better choice for video.
For photo, I will stick with Q3. The lens on D-lux looks very large when extended.
Not as large as the single-focal length lens on the Q3!
I hear you!
Hi cris, what camera do you recommend for an absolute beginner to record videos for UA-cam? Thanks. ❤
I’d say… a Sony camera because of its autofocus performance or a canon. Take care!
(Ps: if you want to know for real lemme know and I’ll be more specific)
@@cris_photography kindly let me know which model to choose.
Mostly indoor, rarely outdoor.
How much of a step down is this from APSc cameras i.e. the X100 series for low light and depth of field? I like the compactness of this one.
I owned the X 100v and I still own the d Lux 7. Trust me, the D-Lux wether it's the 7 or 8 is way better than the overrated Fuji's, as long as your not interested in video
APS-C and M43... it's a long debate but you might see some differences in VERY low light and bokeh. that said, I like the rendering of both X100 series and D-Luxes.
Does the handle of the D-Lux 7 fit on the new camera?
Good question! I don’t think so - but don’t have the official info on that yet
Hi Cris and thanks for the two DLUX 8 videos...both well done👍😎‼️ I'm a dedicated BNW Photographer using the Leica Q2 Monochrom camera only...and this DLUX 8 has me thinking. What are your thoughts about using the 8 as a "drop in my man-bag for an EDC to use instead of my IPhone"...half the weight and considerably smaller then my Q2M ? I'd most likely convert EVF & LCD to Monochrome view...
Thanks and glad the videos were useful to you!
I think it is a GREAT phone replacement for everyday carry and is definitely recommended it.
Is it on par with a Q? Definitely not BUT that wasn’t the aim of Leica either (not the price). Hope that help 😉 take care
@@cris_photography Many Thanks Cris for your response! I know it can't touch my Q2 Monochrom...but I'm considering skipping the iPhone update this year and instead getting the DLUX 8 to carry as my EDC. I do a lot of "Visual Notes" with my old iPhone XS Max to document scenes, time-of-day and location...and then go back to do primary captures with the Q2M. The DLUX 8 should prove infinetly better than my phone for that and capturing the occasional "target of opportunity"👍‼️ BTW - I'm now subscribed to your channel 🤜🤛👍‼️
Yes I think it’ll be a great setup!
Glad yo count you as a subscriber - much appreciated
Hi Cris, is it possible to choose focus point on the screen or even to shoot directly by tilting the screen ? Thanks !
Hello 👋🏼 you can choose focus points on the screen yes - didn’t try shooting that way but am pretty sure you can
@@cris_photography Thanks a lot. Could you try ?
@ftrifiro don’t have the camera anymore (I only get them for testing for a short time period unfortunately) - otherwise I would have
@@cris_photography Thanks Cris :)
Great video review!
Thanks!
Thank you for being honest and transparent. What was Leica thinking about instead of having it assembled and manufactured in Canada or Mexico? Or have a manufactured like in Texas or Tennessee in the USA? Why China?
Aren't most high end smartphones and computers manufactured in China?
🤷🏻
What is the quality of 4K video recording? What is the maximum recording time? I hope the performance related to video recording improves.
Dont know the maximum recording time (didn’t test it since I don’t record videos on such a small camera). Max res is 4K and max gram rate is 30p
I don't see what makes the photos 'Leica-like'. These are just photos from an older yet good M4/3 sensor. So nothing special in the image quality department. That said, the magic was already coming together in the previous Lumix LX100 (mk I and II) and their Leica variants. In a way this is a bit of whimsical update, really no change to the internals, but some nice quality of life upgrades to EVF, screen, body and interface. This is the penultimate D-Lux. The only thing I did not like about the LX100 was the zoom by wire and the fact that the lens sticks out a fair bit during operation, other than that it is a wonderful camera.
Yes true! Thanks for the feedback
Do you know if you can do multiple exposures with the D-Lux 8?
That’s a good question! I don’t know for sure (sorry I had to send the camera back) but am sure you can. Cheers!
I'm not regretting buying the Fuji X100 VI, the D-Lux 8 is massively disappointing, it is basically a D-Lux 7 with a face lift, which in turn was a Panasonic LUMIX LX100 II with a facelift.
I expect more from Leica than this.
Ya I undersand. Do keep in mind that Pana announced they are stopping the production of pocket cameras, so it reduces the choice out there. Take care
@@cris_photography However the G9II is not a brand new camera, so an upgraded sensor with PDAF was available for M43 and redesigning the lens to fully cover the sensor to me is not asking too much of Leica.
If it was £2000 with a G9II sensor, and new lens in this body (or even a slightly larger one) even with stripped back video features compared to the G9II .
The Leica name would have justified the premium over the Fuji X100 VI to a lot of people, I just can't really get passed this being a cash grab rebranding a 10 year old camera and charging almost the same money as Fuji is charging for the X100 VI with arguably the best APS-C sensor and a great lens, and all the latest improvements that have happened in the last few years.
I really hope when it is released there is something that makes this camera worth the price tag (other than the Leica name)
Great Video, thanks. Why is nobody talking about image quality. Surely that’s most important!
I did in my previous video (and this one for bw specifically). Do you have any specific question in mind?
@@cris_photographyI’d like to know about noise performance.
Is the menu etc basically the same as the Q3? The buttons are, so it would make sense.
Very similar. Same in terms of looks and functionality but there are of course less features
@@cris_photography thanks! So even if it's basically a Panasonic, the "experience" is Leica. That might be enough for me...
would it be possible to attach a uv/cpl filter on the lens?
Don’t think so 🤷🏻
Hi! Can you recommend me a camera?
My budget is 100-400€
I'd like a compact camera, versatile to try and test what type of photography I like, thanks!
Hey there, try searching online for a Fujifilm X100S or X100T second hand.
For that budget it’s hard to find a good pocket camera honestly.
Otherwise canon might have some cameras that cost around 400.- but only second hand and definitely not recent tech.
Take care!
@@cris_photography Thanks for the recommendations! I'm close to find my camera 👍
are there film sims for this camera and is it good for street?
The usual ones (vivid, natural, classic, BW, BW HC, etc.)
I think any camera can be good for street but it all depends on what you want and what’s most comfortable to you. Take care
Commenting to trick UA-cam algorithm 🎉
That’s awesome - thanks mate!
What is the button (or wheel) next to the shutter button?
That’s the thumb wheel, you can assign different things to it (for example exposure compensation) cheers
I am tempted with this as a compact travel camera - 2 questions if I may: 1 can I add an an ND and/or Polariser to the lens and 2 despite watching a few YT's I am not clear whether it has a tilting screen or not? Am hoping so! Thank you :)
Hello! I don’t recon you can put an ND or CPL on it and no, no tilting screen sorry!
@@cris_photography thanks so much for your quick reply - despite the info am still a bit tempted!
Wonderful follow up on the D-Lux 8! Thank you.
My pleasure!
I want this thing so badly, but I also just don't want to spend this much on effectively a rebody.
I hear ya!
Comparison to the Ricoh GR would be great 👍🏽
Yes 😉 I’ll do it soob
Sorry I’m just excited lol. Reading mixed messages too. Some are saying the Leica looks could be coming to the camera.
No comparison to GR. GR will rule the day
Can you please discuss the differences of image quality of the camera vs the Q3.
Hello 👋🏼 I haven’t compared them side-by-side so o can’t tell exactly, but the M43 sensor is half the size of a full frame which makes the depth of filed and overall look of the image inferior. That said I’d like to compare them side by side in low light for example and see how it performs.
Welll we’re waiting 😂. I hear a fair amount about how the Q3 presents a “3D” appearance and then there is the undefined Lica look. What are your impressions on this? Should we look forward to see a comparison video soon?
if you own a dlux-7, please do some side by side shots. thank you
I do not have one handy unfortunately 🫣 sorry!
does it have leica looks support?
Don’t know yet - i presume so but still waiting to hear back
How about leica look in fotos? Supported or not?
Unfortunately no info yet ☹️
This would be so great with a 35mm equivalent lens
There is… but not only (it’s a 24-70 ff equivalent)
@@cris_photography yes but I don’t need that and I down like external zoom.
Seeing the camera made in China has me wondering if the Q3 is also made in china regardless of the serial plate.
No - it’s not. And I know that for a fact.
anybody know, if the camera is dust and weather proof?
Not WR - no
So don’t think dustproof either
@@cris_photography thanks for awnser. that is, what I did guess. I have had the 109 - filld with dust on the sensor after a quite short time. so it is a pitty, that the 8 will have none
It is time proof, according to Leica.
Made in China is the only way to keep the price down. But that said, I have some fantastic high quality gear that is made in China, so I have no problem with Made in China. All in all, I don't really care about the facelift, as my M6 was essentially an M4-P with a facelift (and a spot meter) and that same Leica M camera took exceedingly terrible photos until I learned to master it.
Well said Tom!
It's a 2018 camera. Leica is trying to snow us.
I hear ya
This is how Leica shows they don't care about the majority of point and shoot photographers but instead they continue to generate revenues through M and Q series. Very sad since I fell in love with a minilux back in the days.
I hear ya
As a long time owner of D-lux 7 am I the only one who thinks that D-7 in black and silver looks way better? And they are essentially the same anyway “upgrade” is superficial.
It's a very minute upgrade and it's mainly menus and functions but not much in terms of sensor and overall image quality.
People want a Porsche for $30K. Not happening. People accuse Canon of "crippling" their cameras. That's what this camera suggests. You'll get better specs from a Canon M camera, any of them. Leica knows it would need an APS-C sensor with Maestro processing to lure a "budget" (by Leica standards) purchaser. My view: better to save up for a used Leica Q, OG model.
I like your viewpoint Ron, and I think it is the current state of affaires (right or wrong). Take care!
@@cris_photography Thanks. Why did Leica drop the CL? A CL with a fixed lens could appeal.
@RonScibilia that’s a good question! My 2 cents? Anything that would appeal « more than » the Q series would cannibalise the sales of the Q series and that’s now what they want I guess - but again, my couple cents
@@cris_photography Agree.
Not everyone needs (or can afford) such a "large" camera as the Q-series. Some just want size, portability and convenience.
Thank you for the video. This camera is clearly a disappointing release, given recent cameras from other manufacturers that are also in the sub $2,000 price point. This really is just buying the name at this point - which means less and less to me the older I get. Leica can't expect to rely on the fancy brand image they've enjoyed over the years any longer - too much competition.
I hear ya. From a regular consumer standpoint I can see what you mean, but Leica will remain (and that is what they are targeting mainly) a high end customers brand.
If you think luxury or even just renowned brand you think red dot, competition or not.
I had that effect in a lot of events where you show up with Leica and you get the « wow » effect that you would lot get with Canon, Sony or Nikon (even if they are better maybe technically speaking).
Same for a watch, take a Rolex vs Tissot for example, a person with money will go with Rolex (or higher) for its prestige AND price point that ain’t accessible to all. It’s a frame of mind and it’s a strategy - right or wrong that’s how it goes.
Thanks a lot for your message and take care!
@@cris_photography Well said! Im just frustrated because I’d like to buy a leica but I’d feel foolish buying one at a premium price that has the features of a Fuji camera from 2014.
Oh I very much understand you! It’s a very interesting debate (always been 😊) but I can tell I one thing tho: I never found blacks and whites like Leica in any camera - the files are sublime. And of course the optical quality and simplicity of the menus, but you pay the price…
Cheers!
@@cris_photography I think I’ll just a buy camera that has great features (Fuji, Canon, Sony, even Nikon) and then just glue $3,000 onto the body so people know I have Leica-type money. 😎😂
This camera feels like a huge missed opportunity to do something great.
I hear ya
Looks like Leica is offering this camera to anyone who does not own a Leica already, but is desperate to get one. Like promoting a Ferrari with a tiny Fiat engine and lower specs than any average car, but it still is a "Ferrari". The idea must be to tempt buyers to invest further up the ladder once hooked on the Leica system. In my opinion this camera doesn't have much appeal apart from the Leica logo.
Strategically speaking it’s not wrong and a lot of companies do that.
Now saying that « there isn’t enough tech » in it… well then u get a Q at that point and I think that’s why it is the way it is. You like this entry camera? You want more? Now you’re in and you got a taste so you buy more. It’s a good strategy I think - imho.
@@cris_photography Entry camera is fine, I agree. I just find this entry level to be outside of what is "good enough". M4/3, 17 mp and no ibis (I have a 12 year old sony compact with 12mp lying around, why upgrade?). I think Leica would be better off with a far more superior entry camera at twice the price, or half the price of a Q3, outside the price range of X100VI and GRiii etc. Who expects to buy a Ferrari at a lower cost than an average Fiat. The Leica D-Lux 8 as presented looks to me like the least interesting of them all.
@@photograficalex Yep I see what you mean, in fact that'd be a smart move probably. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Not a real competitor to the X100vi.
Yes and no. I think it might be a good side offering (it costs less and while there’s less tech in it it is still a pretty good camera and someone might like that it’s a Leica and that one can afford it)
How can someone spend so much money in 2024 with these specs? Honest question. Is it all just for the name?
I just saw your reply. So would be for the wow factor
Ya I guess so and also for the size, menus and shape I guess?
I wanted to love this camera but its a joke.... nice camera for sure but old tech at high price tag... no improve in af, same megapixel, no tiltscreen, poor video feature... just save 1000 euros and buy a pana lx100 ii
ya I hear you mate
I hear ya!
Lol, this is just a botoxed Panasonic LUMIX LX100 II from 2018.
👍🏼
China ! oh come on... dissapointed now. Not with China, but with Leica. Really?
Hear ya man
you dont talk about the price because all leica users are deemed to be brainless
Was asked many times in the previous review video and… ya I normally don’t mention it (that’s something one can look online in seconds lol) but there - in case 😁
Such a disappointing money grab from Leica.
Hear ya
Unbelievable lack of knowledge about the leica vlux 8 , disappointing
What you mean?
Who would in their right mind buy this shit lmao😂
Everyone but you? My guess…
Let me get this right, Made In China, NO IBIS, No internal ND filter, and only 17 Megapixels AND THEY want 1500.00 USD? Leica is really smoking those skinny cigarettes they make you do funny things, NOPE i will PASS!
Ok 👍🏼
