  • “It’s a 24 hours a day, seven days a week deal. These cattle don’t understand the days of the week or the viruses people might have.”
Folks who care for livestock can surely relate to that statement made by Johnny Trotter, General Manager and President of Bar-G Feedyard in Hereford, Texas.
We hopped in the pickup with Trotter to learn more about the role that feedyards play in the beef industry and, boy, did we learn a lot. May is National Beef Month and we tip our hats to all those who help bring beef to our grocery stores and dinner tables

They produce 200 thousand a year. We slaughter 650 thousand a week. In the U.S. that should give you some prospective as to how much beef we consume

First and foremost, this video was top notch. It is so neat to see what that goes into producing our beef after it leaves the cow calf operations. People like Mr Trotter and his team are to be applauded for their efforts. Finally, and this is to the naysayers, where’s all the antibiotic feed the cattle eat everyday? I understand sick cattle in feed lots get it, but I’m sure there are not that many sick cattle...

So.. if the horses 'turn sour' from the monotony of a feed lot system of ranching...how is this the best way to keep cattle until processing?

@@nisu9238 "best way" yousay.. "what the nutritionsist tells us to feed them" the rancher says. I think the "best way" would be planed grazing. Binding carbon. Building topsoil, making the land better after caddle is introduced. AND producing a healtier AND an actually natural final product and meat. Ofcourse its efficient and produces best amount of product, and proffit. This is not sustainable nor optimal. But this rancher is perhaps atleast following rules and regulation im not bashing this particular dude, but the technique.

@@D3vilman95 I fertilize my farm with the manure from feedlots. nothing better to grow crops. There is no enough pasture to produce this much beef. The manure is contained to go to farm land. On pasture much of the manures carbon is lost or goes to rivers from water loss from cattle compaction of soil.

This is awful, yeah you have to take cows to the vet to be treated , after standing in manure and urine, being feed genetically modified corn an grain.

They clean those pens multiple times a week they aren’t just full of manure and urine and they feed them the best food for the cattle. So try again
