Terry Brooks was my favorite author as a teenager. I loved seeing someone talk about him in a positive way for once. You turned me on to The First Law trilogy last year and I'm finally reading it, on book two now. Thank you for that! He's probably going to be my new favorite fantasy author.
Spot on comparison between Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn and The Farseer Trilogy. I read The Sword of Shannara years ago and saw it as so derivative of Lord of the Rings that I didn’t go past book one, but you might be able to convince me to read further. Excellent video, my friend!
I got so many Assassin's Apprentice vibes from Dragonbone Chair - in all the best ways.
Book 1 of Shannara was literally Fellowship with names and locations changed. I didn't mind when I was 11 because I just wanted more Lord of the Rings. But it did shift after that. But even I didn't read past like book 5 or 6 in the series.
I read the first three shanara books but they seemed like the same book written three times so I stopped. Kind of like the Brust books people have mentioned elsewhere.
So many people in college told me to read Shannara, but it probably took me close to twenty years before I did. I, too, read the first trilogy and then stopped. I felt the third book was better than the first two, but it really wasn't compelling enough to continue.
Looks like I have to read Memory, Sorrow and Thorn now haha
If you like Malazan, I recommend Glen Cook's Black Company series, which helped inspire Malazan.
I've seen that series many, many times in bookstores and have been interested in getting it. It looks good!

I think the Shannara series would be great to read before reading LOTR. Especially if you are younger and just getting into fantasy. Because that’s what I did and I had no problem at all with the similarities of the stories.
I've got a few:
One that most may know of, and as I'm a huge advocate for McCammon-- if you love Stephen King's The Stand, then Robert McCammon's Swan Song is right on par.
2 - If you're a Stephen King fan and you love IT, then Dan Simmons' Summer of Night is a great read.
3 - for fans of Dresden Files (though I've yet to read Dresden, but I hear a ton about it), John Connolly's Charlie Parker series is great starting with Every Dead Thing, if you like a thriller series with a supernatural and horror twist. Connolly also is very good with characters and really gets the reader into their heads. His books are usually longer than your standard "thriller".

When you mentioned Edgar Allen Poe, I got the chills. I remember reading The Tell-Tale Heart in English class. So so good and creepy.
I have watched a numerous "If you like this, read this" videos. This one was the only one I actually liked.
I read A Shadow of What was Lost & I liked it way more than any Sanderson book. Not a Sanderson fan at all but obviously that’s my problem 🤷🏻♂️
I didn't know Cornwell had an Arthur series. I've read the first five books of the Saxon Tales (The Last Kingdom) and they're some of my favorites. Very light and easy to read but a great and fun story with very human characters. I'll definitely check out his Arthurian series. Hell yeah!
I re-read The World Chronicles right after The Faithful & The Fallen, for no particular reason, but it definitely gave me a very clear insight into the similarities. Like you said, the bridge of swords, also breaking the two fingers on the right hand of enemies rather than killing them so they were no longer fit to fight etc. These 2 things and others from both series are probably mired in English history.

"I'm gonna be doing the re-read of Red Rising series once he announces the sixth book..." Is exactly what I've been planning ever since I finished red rising last year and it became my favourite series.
Thanks for the book comparisons. I have been reading some of the classic authors in Sci-Fi and Horror. Ray Bradbury is one of those greats. Bradbury has a kind of unique whimsical melancholy feel to his stories. While "Something Wicked This Way Comes" can be compared to some of Stephen King's writings, I have been finding the subject matter of many of Bradbury's other stories, "The Martian Chronicles," "The Illustrated Man" "Fahrenheit 451" and "The Golden Apples of the Sun" to be similar to another author's writings; that is lesser known and underrated British author John Wyndham, whose most famous novel is probably "The Day of the Triffids." I have already read that novel along with his "The Kraken Wakes," "The Chrysalids," and his short story collection "The Seeds of Time." I'm currently reading "The Trouble With Lichen" and will go on to "The Midwich Cuckoos." I often catch myself thinking of Ray Bradbury while reading John Wyndham.

I have Empire of the Vampire on loan from the library. Hope to get to it before the loan period is up ( I have a terrible habit of checking out way too many books at a time).
Dark Matter is on my TBR. I started reading Recursion, but had to return it to the library. It had a very promising beginning!

Something Wicked This Way comes is a great rec, but I still need to read Different Seasons. I went on a Stephen King reading streak back in high school and college, but never go to this one.
I had heard some negative things about Nevernight, but you have sold me on trying that series

Preach Terry Brooks - I think the Shannara series is a great series especially for younger readers.
I am hoping the read The Licanius Trilogy as well as the Mistborn Trilogy this year. I am already reading The Final Empire. I guess it would make for an interesting comparison between the two in the end!!

Thank you for giving The Sword of Shannara a fair shake. I read Lord of the Rings around the same time and it was a real struggle. It’s still a great piece of work, but Shannara is such an easy and enjoyable read. Now I know I can trust your judgement I’m going to watch your other videos.

You sold me on the Licanius Trilogy. It’s been sitting on my bookshelf for awhile but I keep reading other things. I think I’ll move it up on my TBR.
I highly recommend Blood Song by Anthony Ryan to anyone and everyone. The story itself is told in the same way as Name of the Wind and Empire of the Vampire, but feels more realistic and gritty.
Read it many years ago and loved it. If I remember rightly it has a lot of coming of age & forging of friendships themes, so probably right up Mike's street too.
@@nikk345 you are correct! I think he would absolutely enjoy it if he ever had the chance to read it. The friendships bonded through the brothers of the 6th order feel very organic.

For Vamps you can also try Guilty Pleasures from Laurell K. Hamilton, in show it is the Twilight with real vamps, were, the next books are also good until a certain point (around book 6 or 7) after that becomes 50 shades of VampWolves
I've been struggling to find a comparison but, in a way, I think that just makes this series better. If you like easily accessible high fantasy than check out The Echoes Saga by Philip C Quaintrell. It is easily one of the best self published fantasy series to date and it is such an epic journey. IT'S GOT EVERYTHING! Humans, elves, dwarves, dragons, magic, epic battles, civil wars, rich history, assassins, world building with twists and turns. Petrick Leo got me hooked on this series and, 6 books in, I haven't looked back. Give the first book, Rise of the Ranger, a look. You won't regret it!

I picked up Islington's Licanius book 1 a few years ago on audible and fell in love with it. I'm not one to be in anticipation of anything, but i was excited for book 3

If you like A Song of Ice and Fire, I would highly recommend Monarchies of God by Paul Kearney, it’s very similar but:
1. It’s Age of Exploration instead of medieval
2. It’s shorter and finished
3. It came first by a year
If you like Sword and sorcery and Dark Fantasy then you should all read Elric of Melnibone!
Talking about Constantine. Mike Carey's Felix castor series, starting with: "The devil you know" is by far the most Constantine thing out there. Actually Mike Carey wrote hellblazer for 3 years, as well as Sandman's spin-off Lucifer ( the comic not the TV show )

For Lovecraft/cosmic horror fans, I really recommend Laird Barron. Mostly writes short stories in the vein of Lovecraft. He even has his own unknown entity called the Old Leech.
Another contemporary of HLP who people should check out is Arthur Machen. His story the Great God Pan was a big influence on Stephen King when he wrote N.
Laird Barron is an absolute master. Highly recommend you listen to this gentleman.

part of me misses the 25th-anniversary edition of Sword of Shannara, which I gave away because the kid wanted to read it .... at least I am sharing my passion for reading fantasy
I am keeping my sweet time with Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson so that I can enjoy it at my own pace ... I think I haven't read Robin Hobb will definitely read her works soon
Poe was so formative to my early reading. I had an english teacher in middle school who loved poetry, and the dark tone of Poe's work was so much more interesting than Shakespeare when I was younger. The Pit and the Pendulum, The Masque of the Red Death and of course, The Raven have lines and images that have lived in my head for years since I first read them, and I'll probably never forget them. Great recommendation!

Almuric by Robert E. Howard would be a good reading choice for someone who likes the Barsoom series. It's not exactly great, but if you like REH and John Carter, I'm sure you'll find it an enjoyable, quick read.

Great review! I will definitely take up several of those recommendations. Side note: I just finished The Poppy War and loved it, which goes to show that we all have our own unique tastes. But like you, I'm a huge Michael Crichton fan and generally enjoy a lot of the same books. Love what you do!
Loved this vid! I'm really enjoying Licanius (I'm on book 2), so I guess I have to pick up Mistborn now... I have not been successful trying to read Sanderson before.
If you've read one Sanderson you've read them all. The same tired, archetypical characters recycled over and over from book to book, only put in different settings with some weird ecological quirks.

Have you read Stephen R. Donaldson’s The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant? It is a seminal fantasy series that a lot of booktubers don’t talk about. It’s a great series. On par with the Dark Tower, Wheel of Time, etc.

Edgar Allen Poe is also a pioneer of the deductive mystery genre. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle mentioned he created Sherlock Holmes based on EA Poe's C. Auguste Dupin in the Murders in the Rue Morgue.

Great vid! I am a huge Dresden fan and similar ito feel is Garrett PI series by Glen Cook. Really good books. Also Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. Finally...Dresden on steriods is Nate Temple series.
I've heard those comparisons a couple times now.
I also highly recommend The Licanius Trilogy. I was very surprised how much I enjoyed the read. I don't get the wheel of time comparison at all. It's it's own unique story. And I honestly thought it got better as it went on.
Winter King! Yes! Some of his best work!
Empire of Silence!!!! Finished that in 3 days. Such awesome pacing, great characters, and the plot.... Ruocchio doesn't pull punches. I'm almost done with "Howling Dark", and the theme continues. No idea where things are going and I'm constantly thrown with the direction he takes you. I bought the rest of the series already and can't wait to get through it!

Definitely agree with the Something Wicked / Needful Things comparison, and a more recent one for me was, as you mentioned, Warlord Chronicles and Faithful and the Fallen (I think I mentioned it in all three of my goodreads reviews).
I'll be 100% checking out the Sun Eater series.

@@jasonsouth1652 That english release is *GREAT news,* I *really want* to get into that story, I would read Mahoutsukai no Yoru but I don't think I will have the time, so for now, I plan to watch the Ufotable movie adaptation, I hope it does justice to the story that started the nasuverse.
I don't think I have a favorite bit, *I love everything* xD, I still need to read the Tsukihime VN though. But first, later in this year I am going to read the first route of Fate/Stay Night, I watched the anime adaptation but well, you know it is not the best adaptation so finally I will have the time to experience the full and true potential of that first route.
@@carlosdanielcalderonmontoy3723 just know that yoru is incomplete and I doubt that ufotable adaptation (despite their track record will be good) will be good or need more movies.
yoru also from what I know deals in some of my favourite aspects of the nasuverse.

also really hope Tsukihime remake gets an English patch.( though I can read enough to translate it) most likely depend on whether yoru sells well in English. also my favourite still goes to kara no kyoukai. really want to get the books at some point as well and read book 6 because apparently its not a great adaptation.

OH YES💯💯, I want to know a *lot more* of those two elements/concepts, The Root immensely fascinated me in Kara no Kyoukai and about the True Magic I don't know a lot, just a little bit of its branches, which equally fascinate me, The Third Magic - Heaven's Feel, The Second Magic with the Jeweled Sword Zelretch and I don't remember quite well what they mentioned in Kara no Kyoukai, I need to rewatch it. The lore in the Nasuverse is *something else.*
About Tsukihime, I hope that too, I would buy it the second it is released.
What I know about the adaptation of the book 6 is that it is darker than what was portrayed in the movie (I loved it tho), I might check the book as well.
I also need to read Hollow Ataraxia and watch Lord El Melloi. And right now I am reading Tsuki no Sango, I almost finish it and I LOVE IT, it will be a 10/10 for me.

Your recommendations has opened a new world that I never knew existed. I just got my kindle paper white so I’m trying to build my collection. What a great idea for a video, you made me aware of a bunch of new reading options! I have several ordered!
For those who want to go back to the roots of A Song of Ice and Fire, the politics minus the Fantasy (and with a much less dark tone), there's The Accursed Kings by Maurice Druon. I can't vouch for the translation (I read the series in French) but it's a little more literary than Martin's style, but still very accessible.
I dont care about writing styles but Name of the Wind is still my second favorite book of all time after A Storm of Swords. It has brilliantly written characters, an interesting detailed world with many secrets and the most important thing: story. The story is different than most fantasy series but thats what sets it apart. Its a Tragedy/revenge story/slice of life with a flawed protagonist that creates most of his problems himself (thats why he isnt a mary sue).
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I think the story was meh and Kvothe wasn't likable or realistic.
Too sad it won´t ever be finished.
If you love the Warlord chronicles you need to read The Archers tale and that series. It’s a grail quest through the 100 years war. Bernard Cornwall just hits harder. Check it out.

Probably not what you are expecting but I have already read the first three books of Barsoom John Carter of Mars. So will definitely have to read Dune now. I know the way you recommend it is usually the other way around.
Closest to GoT I read was Acacia trilogy by David Anthony Durham. This series is if GRRM wrote only about house Stark characters.

Great video Mike! I'm really glad you stuck with reasonably popular stuff for both sides of your comparisons. Too many times I see, "If you liked LotR, then you'd like this hyper-specific niche series from this indie author who writes with their toes." Plenty of books here for me to branch out into. Probably better try First Law someday soon.
Dresden for me is very similar to the Nightside series by Simon R Green. The main character John is full of the snark and banter and the world is very colourful.

If you enjoy historicized Arthuriana, Jack Whyte's A Dream of Eagles series is a good read as well.
Another good series to try and scratch that urban fantasy itch (Dresden Files), is Shayne Silvers’ Nate Temple series!

I just have to add that if you like the Dresden Files, I recommend Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos novels. Don't take my word for it: In the short story Jury Duty Harry himself quotes Vlad so he must be a fan.

And if we are talking about Vampires scary ones. Make sure to check Joe Pitt casebooks by Charlie hutson. Beginning with already Dead. Can't recommend it enough

The Delicate Dependency (Victorian vampires)
Fevre Dream (GRRM vampires)
They Thirst (Salem's Lot on a bigger scale)
The Keep (Nazi's, spooky castle and a vampire)
Children of the night (Science and vampires in the same universe as Dracula)
The Passage (Apocalyptic vampire story similar to King's writing)
I would add Kim Newman's Anno Dracula series to that list.
