From a patient viewpoint this approach and flow does seem better than so many. I think we (the audience) have seen many a neuro exam that's been awkward or long enough to cause even a cooperative patient to tire of it.

I did have one question: Why is this not something routinely done at all normal checkups? I feel this is an important thing to do every time you go in for a routine checkup.
If you have a problem with one of your cranial nerves (say you lost the sense of smell), it would stand out and you'd immediately go to get checked. And that's when it makes sense to do an entire check. However, if every patient that walks in gets a complete physical examination, the normal consultation time would jump from approximately 5 minutes to about 45 minutes up to an hour. @@DrJamesGill I get that, it just sounded comical lol! But to add to The Harris' question: and if anyone did answer positively, what did they say you were missing?
Teaching is quite subjective. I know there are students who do resonate with my teaching style. Others find it difficult to get along with. We need to try to empower our students to give feedback, which may or may not be appropriate to be a rued on. But also allow students to choose their own most appropriate path for teaching.
Lyrics to Cranial Nerve Test with Pat LaFontaine & Dr. James Kelly Dr. James Kelly: Now what we're going to do today is just the Cranial Nerve Examination and we'll start it up at the top and move down in terms of reflexes and strength and coordination. And so the first thing I want you to do first of all is to square yourself off knees back - on the edge of the table, back further. So your legs are dangling, okay good. Nice and square all the way so that you're looking straight at my nose. What I want you to do is just point with your hands so the fingers that you see wiggle, but keep staring at my nose all the time. (pause ) Now, watch my finger wherever it goes holding your head still the whole time. (pause) Okay, good. I'm going to touch your forehead and your face. You tell me if you can feel at the same on both sides, about the same? Pat LaFontaine: Yeah. Dr. James Kelly: Equally? Even in here where that injury was before? Pat LaFontaine: Yeah. Dr. James Kelly: Or there's a little numb there. Pat LaFontaine: The other side here? Dr. James Kelly: Well, remember that on your second one you have that cut right here. Pat LaFontaine: Oh that's right. Dr. James Kelly: Can you feel that? Pat LaFontaine: Yeah. Dr. James Kelly: Oh, so that's all back to normal now. Pat LaFontaine: That's good. Dr. James Kelly: That's good too. Close your eyes real tight. Real tight like you got soap in them. Don't let me open them up - fight, fight, fight, fight, fight, okay, good. Wrinkle up your forehead like that, good. Show me your teeth like this, okay, good. Open them wide and say ah. Pat LaFontaine: Aaah. Dr. James Kelly: Okay, stick out your tongue. Okay, good. Clench your teeth. Again. Okay, that's good. I'm going to make soft noises next to your ears. Close your eyes and tell me left or right. Pat LaFontaine: Right. Left. Both. Dr. James Kelly: Okay, that's good. Shrug your shoulders like this. Okay. Turn your head as far as it will go to the left and hold it there. Okay, now to the right. Good. Forward and back. Okay. No problems that way with that at all, okay good. With your hands, hold them up in front of you like this. Stretch all the way up like you have them on board. Now, close your eyes and hold them nice and steady. (pause) I'm going to tap your hands, don't let them move. Keep your eyes closed and touch your nose with this finger. Okay and now with this one. Okay, perfect. Just relax and open your eyes. With your right hand, do this like I'm doing it real fast, right on that knuckle. Very good, left hand. Okay, very good, now do this. And the other hand. Very good. Now here in this knee, do this. And there. Okay, good. Touch my finger with yours. And then touch your nose. Go back and forth wherever I move my finger. Very good, now left hand. Okay, that's great. Hold your arms up like this and don't let me push them down, fight real hard. Okay, good. Make muscles like this and don't let me pull them up, fight. Okay, same idea, fight. Okay. Same position, this time push out. Okay. Okay, good. Now stiff wrist back like this and don't let me bend them. Okay. All right, very good. Grip my hands. Very good. Fingers spread apart and don't let me squeeze them together, fight real hard. Fight real hard with fingers back like this and don't let me push them down. I'm going to push them down. Okay, that's very good. Now, with one knee at a time I'm going to have you lift it up and not let me push them down. So just pick this leg up, fight, okay, and this one. Okay, very good. Push your knees out against my hands, okay, and pull them in. Okay, kick out. Kick out. Okay and then I'll pull back and don't let me pull it in. Here you go, now pull. There you go. Now, feet up in the air like this and don't let me push you down. Okay and this one. Same thing. Okay, very good. Now, if we did that right, the doctor and the patient are supposed to get red in the face, but I suspect only I got red... Pat LaFontaine: Hahahah. Dr. James Kelly: ...in the face this time. (pause) This one, right here. (pause) Okay, scoot back just a little, so your shoes are out. Here you go, perfect. Just like that nice and loose. (pause) Okay, good. Now, stare at the edge of that picture and don't blink as I tap your forehead, just with my finger. Keep staring there. Okay, now here, feel this first, Pat. It's a little bit - it's not sharp, but it's rough, right. I'm going to stroke your palm like that. Look at that. Don't pay any attention to what I am doing. The same thing here. Same thing here. Okay, good. Now, I'm going to tap my finger, just let your jaw hang, just like that. Okay, very good. Cool metal, yes, cool? Pat LaFontaine: Uh-hum. Dr. James Kelly: Same? Pat LaFontaine: Uh-hum. Dr. James Kelly: Here and here, about the same? Pat LaFontaine: About the same. Dr. James Kelly: Here, here, about the same? Pat LaFontaine: Uh-hum. Dr. James Kelly: Here and here, about the same? Pat LaFontaine: Yeah. Dr. James Kelly: Okay. And here and here? Pat LaFontaine: Uh-hum. Dr. James Kelly: Okay and now, what I'm going to do down here is I'm going to put this on your ankle and you can tell me what you feel now. Pat LaFontaine: Vibration. Dr. James Kelly: Okay. Tell me when it's completely gone, look away. Pat LaFontaine: Gone. Dr. James Kelly: Okay. This one? Same way do you feel it? Pat LaFontaine: Yeah. Gone. Dr. James Kelly: Okay, good. Okay, the rest of what we would do in terms of pin prick and all that, I'm not going to go through today because I know that's all been normal all along and I wouldn't anticipate that to be a problem. I do want to look in your eyes. You still have just a little bit of a lid lag on your left since that blow to your brow. Pat LaFontaine: Yeah. Was that when you first told me about. The right side of my eye? I think that as always there. What I mean... Dr. James Kelly: It was your face. Pat LaFontaine: It was the right side of my face. Dr. James Kelly: Yeah it was, but it was down - it was here. Pat LaFontaine: Yeah. Dr. James Kelly: And then what we did is that you gave me that video tape... Pat LaFontaine: Like in prior. Dr. James Kelly: ...of the pre-injury. That it was always - it's just the way your face has been all your life. Pat LaFontaine: The way it is. Dr. James Kelly: Yeah. So, what I want you to do now is just stare again at that spot. Blink anytime you need to, but keep staring at one spot. I apologize for my sandwich breath here. (pause) Alright, look straight. Any problems with your hearing? I actually I didn't detect anything. Pat LaFontaine: No. Dr. James Kelly: Problems with wax build up, of anything I should look in there? Pat LaFontaine: They're good. Dr. James Kelly: Alright, they're good. But what I'm speaking off really has to do with the opening of this eye compared to this one. Pat LaFontaine: Right. Dr. James Kelly: This one still is down a little bit because of all that injury right here. Pat LaFontaine: Yeah. Dr. James Kelly: From your last concussion. Pat LaFontaine: That's why I had all the redness for the longest time. Dr. James Kelly: You sure did. It half-closed your eye. Pat LaFontaine: A real long time. Dr. James Kelly: For the longest time. And so, now I think that the control of that lid is still impeded a little bit. Pat LaFontaine: Really? Dr. James Kelly: By the soft tissues that are coming down on it. Pat LaFontaine: Okay. Dr. James Kelly: And it's just... it's just minimal. I don't think it's a neurological issue at all. Pat LaFontaine: It's just this, cosmetic. Dr. James Kelly: Yeah. Well and probably isn't noticeable to any body other those of us who examined you and... Pat LaFontaine: Yeah. Dr. James Kelly: Look for these sorts of things. Pat LaFontaine: Yeah, because I don't even notice it. Dr. James Kelly: Yeah. Yeah, looks fine. Everything else looks just like it has before. It's just perfectly fine. There are no problems.

Good luck!
When is the exam?
Thank you So much Dr Gill! Keep educating the world, we need more hard working doctors like you!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
👍👍 as long as people are benefitting I’ll try and do something.

"Super thank you very much"
The most thankful and polite doctor I've ever seen...
It genuinely worried me about the comments about manners here
Almost all of the doctors who trained me were brilliant. We all have a bad day at times, or have a challenging consultation, but manners literally cost nothing
Although I’ll admit
“Thank you very much - Sir”
Is a phrase that changes significantly depending on tone and where the emphasis is placed
@@DrJamesGill I´m glad to see that kind of respect for others... Those are the "little" things that change our world for better.
Being thankful for our masters, being respectful, patient and gracious to others, and always studying to improve in everything we do.
That's the true evolution.
I got here for the asmr... stayed for it plus your personality. I'm also learning a lot from you... Sincerely "Super thank you very much!" =)
It is so helpful to have these close up shots of the cranial nerves in action! Particularly the pupillary response and hard and soft palate! Excellent job!
Thank you! They are without a doubt the hardest bits!
Me sitting here having no clue what any of this is about or why it's important but still willing to follow this man to the end of the earth
Love the video, the audio is awesome! Thank you!
Thank you! This one took a while to get right! 😊
I started to watch you for ASMR long ago, but thanks to you doc, i'm now a student in thanatopsis After attempted med School. Thanks to you for awakening a goal in my life
I can’t believe it’s been so many years since he started doing the medical videos. He’s been a source of ASMR since then!
I came for the soothing accent and the asmr and left knowing more than I came in with. Always a great experience as usual
Life is good when the Gill uploads new content.
I remember the first time I properly got my eyes tested (2 years ago) and the guy who was examining my eyes didn’t give me any sort of warning before he was right up in my face. It kind of freaked me out at first but I eventually got used to it.
I appreciate that you told what you were going to do and asked if it was okay too.
I love the asmr community. Y'all are so gentle and so funny! I want to be this comment section when I grow up.
The King of ASMR has returned!!!
Always a wonderfully reassuring voice, professional manner and so thorough, just what you want from a medical professional.
All hail Dr. Gill, the Bob Ross of medical examinations!
I know this sounds weird but I having a glass of water earlier and when I swallowed the water it made me think of that video where Dr Gill had his fingers on the young lady's throat to feel her swallowing the water, and in turn it made me decide to get on here and see if Dr G had put up any new videos and.....WOW!!
That’s a good memory you’ve got. We’ll be refilming thyroid in 4k in a few weeks

Ladies and gentlemen, the incomparable Dr. Gill
James I wonder if you might consider putting on labels on the screen to say which number cranial nerve you are testing whilst testing?
Dr. Gill and the tzatziki at the local Greek joint = the best parts of my day...
I need a loop with Dr Gill saying "Any double vision"... so soothing 😊
Big Gill sanitising his hands long before COVID, what a man.
Would love if you could explain why you check these certain areas and how it would look different if someone had a problem. Thanks for amazing videos as always!

@@DrJamesGill brilliant! Thank you!
I already racked up 20 views on the previous one. I dont have the energy today!🤣 Will probably get a few more in this evening!I dont think my doctor has ever actually looked me in the eye not to mind mustering up any interest in my cranial nerves! I try to stay healthy so as to avoid him, so perversely being his patient is conducive to wellbeing! Best of luck with new channel!

Aside from being a top academic and superb practitioner and coming from the one the best universities in the world (Durham), Dr Gill is a legend amongst ASMR fans and a UA-cam sensation, well done on all your hard well-earned work. 😊
I went to Nottingham and then Warwick, sorry never been to Durham!
Thanks doctor! Much improved audio this time round!
Dr Gill's voice (in these videos) is very calming and relaxing. Soothing sometimes also. He is one of the few Male ASMRtists who can do this very well! Sesame Street's Grover in the library was another one.
This was amazing! Your voice is incredible. I wish you were my doctor.
Thank you. Doctors are very personal things, the approach for one patient may not work for the other though.
Imagine the wait for an appointment?
"Sorry Sir, the first appointment we have is for 2055"
"OK great, so 5 to 9?"
"No Sir, the year"
A good idea is to watch Dr Gill's videos at 0.5 speed. Highly informative and entertaining.
🤣🤣🤣 - I think most of the students would prefer me to speed up and get on with it
Thanks Dr Gill. Superb. Looking forward to your (JAM..Chris Morris) 'Synchronised Cocks' video.
I've learned quite a bit about medicine by watching your videos... and I'm an engineer. Your ASMR powers bring every kind of people into your videos.
I would love to know what your thoughts on the fact that you are an ASMR legend are.
If this guy had longer videos he would 1.2 mil subscribers. Best Asmr in the biz
Dr. Gill’s archiving medical resources for aspirants and apprentices of medicine, and in excellent quality they are. Fantastic! Brilliant!
my new daily asmr. thanks Dr. Gill!
Hello Dr. Gill! I was wondering if you have any baseline videos going over each individual cranial nerve and function as well as how you test them… I am only in high school but am still interested and can’t think of anyone i’d rather learn from!
We have a whole playlist covering that question 😊

The audio is wonderfully crisp Dr Gill. Truly great and informative video!
Thank you. I think I’m getting the hang of it - sometimes
Dr Gill missed me so much lmao, I'm so glad he opened his channel
Glad you’ve come along for the journey! What do you think so far?
@@DrJamesGill well, I haven't much to say because the sound and video quality way improved
It's still a great pleasure to watch it (and it's still very very relaxing 😊)
You can be very proud!
"If you look at my face, am I missing anything?"
Me: Is that a trick question? 🤔🤣
It’s a good way of determining quickly if the patient has any visual defects, before doing the thorough exam
@@DrJamesGill has anyone replied that you are mssing something?
@@DrJamesGill I get that, it just sounded comical lol!
But to add to The Harris' question: and if anyone did answer positively, what did they say you were missing?
The name is Gill... Doctor JAMES Gill...
Dr. Gill is perhaps the most interesting man in the world.
I would love to have this guy as a teacher.
Teaching is quite subjective. I know there are students who do resonate with my teaching style.
Others find it difficult to get along with. We need to try to empower our students to give feedback, which may or may not be appropriate to be a rued on. But also allow students to choose their own most appropriate path for teaching.
This man could quite possibly be the smoothest, well mannered, posh intellectual.
2:27 he forgot to apologise for his sandwich breath
And for getting red in the face
lexafram it was your face
@Ryan Devens like a football pitch... Where the team would line up

This gonna be a good day
Damn, dude became a doctor to be an asmr youtube star. Good for you doc!
Lyrics to Cranial Nerve Test with Pat LaFontaine & Dr. James Kelly
Dr.
There are no problems.
i had no clue that was a celebrity
Lyrics. Lmao 😂🎉
