On the pulling while walking issue what worked for us to attached the leash to your belt and the second the slack in the leash is gone turn 180 degrees and start walking in the opposite direction, do that without warning your dog that you have changed direction; even if the puppy gets flipped over. We had done that to both of our Vizsla's and both of our German Longhair Pointers; it is very effective and within a just a few days they learn that the rules have changed and you can enjoy loose leash walking. The technique was so effective for us that we could walk with two dogs on a single leash with a puppy coupler and grasp the leash very loosely even using a single finger on the leash to control both dogs.
As far as Lord Cannon's issue with Kleenex all I can say is good luck; our first Vizsla lived to the age of 12 1/2 years and our second Vizsla lived to the age of 15 1/3 years and we were never able to cure them of their fascination with Kleenex; the best we could do was to learn to keep the bathroom door shut.

Don't know where you live, but your walk area is magnificent! I live in south east Texas, USA and we have lots of woods and water but nothing around here is as spectacular as your walk area! Also, please be careful with dried ears or dried hide. We had a terrible experience with intestinal blockages from dried pig ears and rawhide chews. It was very costly at the vet and nearly cost us a Vizsla!! They appear at first to be great chew toys, but if the dog eats them it can cause issues. Check with your vet to verify. Y'all are doing great with LC. Keep up the god work. You are creating a life companion you will never forget !!!! Thanks again for the youtube diary.

Motley always think positive reinforcement is a game so she pushed the limits more. Consequences is needed for vizslas I feel like. They are too smart. They know exactly what they are doing. Im glad you guys are honest about this. It makes me feel better about how I'm training. I agree that there are times to reward as well! Good job Cannon for having the best week so far! 👍Proud of you bud!!

we walk 3 times a day. and no metter how hard exercise, each evenind our puppy makes us crazy. he runs over home, barks and bites if we try to calm him with toys or just hugs. it lasts for hour or even more. we tryied to egnore. it dosen't help. we left him for a while in the other room. it doesn't help to. i spend with him 24 hours a day by the fact. we play with mates-dogs at the walk. we train. but at the end of the day everything turns to pumpkins.. he sleeps at the sofa, when i am writing this speech and looks like an angel.

It’s tough but what we have been doing is a lot of training when he is awake or going in the garden when we are not out on walks, in the evening we give him a buffalo ear and that chills him out before bed. As soon as he starts biting we know he’s tired and it’s time for bed. 😊🐾🐾

We had exactly the same problem with our german shorthaired pointer.
Imho: try setting a very clear set of rules and boundaries, learn to ignore your dog and by ignoring him I'm talking no eye contact, no talking to him in sweet voice, nothing, when you play with him introduce a "that's it" command that ends the play / training with a clear gesture - as soon as you say the word and do the gesture, ignore him completely let him do his dog stuff and if he's trying to destroy something tell him firmly to stop (you can even growl at him) and if he doesn't either pull him away and block him from his target or limit his space (lock him somewhere until he calms down). You spending 24 hours a day and giving him all the attention he wants might actually be the root cause of the problem. He needs to learn to calm down on his own and let you do you stuff. If you run to him every time he whines, comes to you with a toy etc. then you're doing it wrong.
Also, maybe by going out 3 times a day and providing him with so much excitement you overload him a bit too much? The cortisone in his blood stays up for quite long period of time. A young dog needs roughly 20 hours of sleep each day, around 4 hours of deep sleep (when his legs are stretched), the remaining 4 hours are different activities: walking, running, training, exploration, sniffing, eating etc. Around 1-2 hours should be dedicated for chewing or licking: kong, lick mat, chew toys that are fit for puppies.
What are you doing with your dogs during the walks? Where do you guys walk? Is he running off leash? Do you guys let him explore on his own?
The thing is, we see our puppies as angels and shower them with humanly love but these are superbly intelligent dogs that were bred to aid humans in hunting and at the same time they're very opportunistic, they'll do a lot to get what they want. They were not meant to be house pets or couch potatoes. Of course, some "softer" and "less strong willed" Vizslas or GSPs will adjust more or less to their families but the stronger ones will do a lot to set their own set of rules. These dogs need not only physical stimulation but first and foremost mental stimulation. Our trainer stressed that left cerebral hemisphere in the dogs is responsible for "thinking, analysing, calm reactions" and it's super important to work on activating it as much as we can when we train our pointers, teaching them patience, waiting, calming down etc. because if we let only the right cerebral hemisphere work they become very unbalanced, reactive etc.
Also, don't let him go to sleep for like 1 hour before bedtime, tire him up a bit then go out for a pee and that's it. If he sleeps for the whole afternoon and then wakes up in the evening, he's got his batteries recharged and he's ready to go.

Our lab pup, who is the same age, has a real thing about tissues too, sniffs and steals them from my husbands parents who live with us! She loves ball games and is getting better at sharing the ball! They are really hard work but hopefully all the working with them now will pay off. Any tips for stopping the jumping would be fab. As you can't really meet people it is hard to get friends etc to walk past many times to help with their training of this which is what we did in the past with previous dogs. Really enjoying your clips and glad things are improving.

Have you thought about getting a raised platform dog bed/stand? It’s basically like a cot for dogs. It might be a good thing to teach a raised place and time out space where he can just have that safe calm space that’s his own. Check out Standing Stone Kennels- they have a lot of videos on place training with the platforms!

Time out works really well with Harley and when playtime gets toooo excitable we end it for a few minutes then go back to it. Horse poop is still a thing but I have learnt that if I can see it ahead I get a treat ready, walk him close to it say LEAVE and if he chooses to leave it and come to me ( even if it’s just for a split second) he gets his treat and we walk by quickly - getting there.
He has now started to show his stubbornness for example when he needs the toilet he is used to me being out there with him ( mainly because I want to a . Makes sure he has gone and b. To pick it up but I don’t always want to rush him so I want to teach him that it is ok to go without me being there but nope the little monkey just sits by the door 🙈

Hey guys! How did the trainer visit go? What did he/she say?
We've visited a trainer specializing in pointers (she has a Vizslas kennel and is a certified trainer and behaviorist) and been following her advice for the last couple of days. We see a HUGE improvement in our puppy's behaviour. We were told that she has an extremely strong and dominant character, most likely was the strongest pup in the litter and will require a lot of work consequent training, clear rules and discipline but on the other hand the trainer told us that "these kind of dogs are super smart and the best ones to work with in the end". After setting a clear set of rules, stopping showering her with love and snacks and constantly teaching her patience and reminding her that it's the human who's the leader (for example not letting her storm through the door, ask her to wait for 20-30 sec before she can eat, making her do one or two simple commands before she can get anything etc. ) and learning how to ignore her whining or attempts to make us do what she wants (be that playing, letting her enter some parts of the house, going outside because she feels like it etc.), she instantly calmed down, stopped 90% of her destructive behaviour and basically she seems like a totally different dog. She's still testing me every single day but now she's muuuuch more obedient, calmer and fun to work with (which in turn translates into my better mood and behaviour).
We'll be having training sessions once per 2-3 weeks to ensure her progress. Hope you guys are doing great too.

@@LordCannonTheVizsla I think super smart dogs like Vizlas or GSPs, if they happen to be the stronger pups from the litter, often work in "give them an inch and they'll take 10 miles" mode. Especially if you go only with positive reinforcement methods and completely stress-free upbringing.
Our trainer said openly that judging by my dog's character it will most likely be necesarry at some point to train her using the remote electric collar to teach her not to chase rabbits, deer or does. I know that everyone is advocating positive methods nowadays, but I'm not against it. I'd rather have a well trained dog that won't get shot by a huntsman when caught poaching or hit by a car when she runs away than a dog that can run away from you anytime she wants and cause some trouble or get hurt. Snacks & love are one thing, hunting drive encoded into her DNA is something completely different and far stronger.
My friend often gets his daughter's GSP for a week or two when she has to leave for vacation or business trip. That dog has been running away from him during walks and coming home after a few hours multiple times already. I don't want mine to share the same behaviour.
Luckily Vizslas don't have such a strong prey drive as far as I know so you guys should be OK.

@@lordzlomek very true, give an inch they take a mile! I would prefer to use positive reinforcement all the way but he just doesn’t respond to it! Like you said it’s dangerous if they run off and don’t listen. We have realised that we have to be a lot firmer with him. Like you I want a well trained dog. 😊🐾

    • @lordzlomek
      @lordzlomek 3 роки тому

@@LordCannonTheVizsla I'm afraid "positive reinforcement only methods" look good only on UA-cam videos and are so popular due to the very specific socio-political climate we experience nowadays in some countries and general demand that everything should be stress-free, happy and politically correct.
I'm against violence towards animals but setting a very clear set of rules and making the dog realize that "you are the boss who controls the access to all valuable resources" (be that food, play or couch) and that it cannot do whatever he/she wants and force his/her behavior upon everyone around is a completely different thing.
Really hope our dogs will turn out just fine ;)
Example from this morning: she jumped on my bed at night, which she knows she's not allowed to do. I was super sleepy and a bit reluctant to push her off and did let her stay for a minute (which was probably a mistake), gave her a couple of strokes and spoke to her in soft voice. When we woke up, went outside and after she ate her breakfast, she started to misbehave and test her borders really hard. Maybe she could sense that I am still somewhat tired and a bit sleepy but she was trying really hard to piss me off: started biting the couch, then when corrected (I pulled her away and back onto her dog bed and told her not to) she started going around the house picking on exactly these spots which she knows I'm not allowing her to (biting plants, other furniture, standing and placing her paws on the table etc.). It ended up with a 5 min time-out in a crate. When I let her out she started jumping at me to which I reacted by standing firmly, turning away and growling. She went back to biting the furniture -> another 5 min time-out in the crate. After the 2nd time-out she was just running about and whining, tried to force contact with me - I turned away (without any eye, vocal or phisical contact) a couple of times and ignored her completely. 3 minutes later she's chewing on a beef snack on her dog bed and now she's sleeping calmly. Mission completed. No violence or anything.

In my experience, it is harder for dog owners of active and curious dogs breeds like Vizslas to teach not to pull on a leash. I think that walking fast and exploring is very rewarding for them. So sometimes for them it is more attractive to explore than to get the treat. Therefore they pull - their environment is just more interesting than the treat. So if you continue to do as you implemented now, stopping and going back some steps when they pull, they learn that they only can continue to do the rewarding thing (to walk forward, therefore move and explore) when they don’t pull. Usually works very well:)
I wish you success in your training and a enjoyable next week. Looking forward to the next video ☺️

@@LordCannonTheVizsla we have exactly the same problem and even our small city is a super-high distraction area for my GSP. She treats it as if she was in the forest (in the forest she's magnificient, keeps at 20-30 m distance, comes back on whistle etc. but in a city she's a nightmare to walk with (she has better days though)). In the forest I try not to follow a path and let her explore on her own but I try to take part in the exploration, going into bushes, then chaging directions and encouraging her to search. If she gets excited, I call her back and do a few trick with her to calm her down, ask her to stay for 10 sec and then release her to continue. Congratulations!! I guess if we could go back to the start I would do these things.
Introduce a house line from day one.
If you are crating him/her spend as much time making the crate an amazing place.
Section off an area where he will be spending most of his/her time as we gave him way too much freedom to begin with.
Get into a routine as early as possible.
Kong toys are great to buy, he loves the bears.
Get him/her a bed to sit/play/sleep in and teach him/her the word bed early on.
Don’t panic if it’s difficult at the start, I promise you it gets easier and soon he or she will be sleeping through the night!
      Enjoy and have fun! 🐾😊

    • @vestafreyja
      @vestafreyja 3 роки тому +1

To drive home the issue with making the crate an amazing place to be is determine what kind of treat your puppy really loves and only give them that treat while they are in the crate. Once your puppy has learned to play fetch throw the toy or object into the crate and let them retrieve the fetch object from the crate they will quickly learn that nothing bad happens when they enter it. When the puppy is young have two crates one in your bed room for sleeping and a second one in the main living area for daily use. Your first couple of nights with your new puppy are going to be rough for all concerned. What worked for us is have one of sleep on the floor while the puppy is in the crate when the puppy has settled down and fallen asleep wait a few more minutes before you get up and go to bed; the first night you might have to repeat the process a number of times; in just a few days time your puppy will be sleeping mostly thru the night well at least for up to 4 hours or so when the puppy wakes up take him/her outside immediately because most likely they woke up because they needed to pee. Please remember the first night home your puppy has never been away from their brothers and sisters so it is new and scary for the puppy so please be patient with your new puppy.
Potty training for your new puppy, when they wake up take them outside to do their business, after they have eaten or drink water take them outside until they do their business and be very observant of your new puppy; if they start sniffing around take them outside to do their business. After an intense play session take them outside take them to see if they need to relieve themselves. If you are observant of your puppy you will be able to learn what signals to look for when they need to be taken outside to relive themselves; we found that after the first week or so they are more or less house broken because they will signal that they need to be taken outside and if you miss the signal IT IS NOT THEIR fault but yours.
