      did you struggle in the EECS program? my child just made it to UCB EECS. you are accepted to this program because of your extracurriculars, not your academic success. 2.9 gpa and 1360 sat, that is weak against good competition but you are a swimming champ. my child scored 780/800 SAT math and 680/800 English for a total of 1460/1600 SAT at age 11 to be qualified as gifted kid under Duke TIPS and Johns Hopkins CTY. he took like 16 courses in Computer Science (senior level CS like pattern/AI) and Math (cal I, II, III, differential equations, linear algebra, discrete, math for CS) in university. he competed in college cybersecurity (National Cybersecurity League, Cybersecurity penetration, etc) and finished in top 1% of about 6000+ competitors. 7 AP exams (ap calculus, physics, CS) with all 5s, perfect GPA, 1540 SAT score, IPPF debate top 8 for 2 years,
      He got rejected at Stanford and MIT tho. Carnegie Mellon and Cornell, still pending. EECS is very competitive according to UCB with lower than 5% acceptance rate. If you are in my child's class, he will kill you for sure 🤣 as he never got a lower than 96% in all of his 16 university math/cs courses.

    Hey Marcos, where have you applied and where have you been accepted? Why did you choose Berkeley over those schools?

    • @marcosricopeng
      @marcosricopeng  3 роки тому

      So I applied (and got rejected) from Columbia early decision after talking with their swimming coach for a while. Apart from that I only applied to Berkeley because I was garanteed admission (because of swimming). I chose Berkeley over the other schools i was talking to because they have an amazing (well #1) swim program as well as world class education, especially in computer science which was what I wanted to major in

    Hi Marcos , I am a mom and my daughter is also doing her IB DP in Michigan currently Junior and will be applying to all UCs. I want to ask when you select IB in application , do they give you credit in the system for honors or do we have to add and enter the grades for 10 th (MYP) and 11 th ( DP1).

    • @marcosricopeng
      @marcosricopeng  3 роки тому +1

      Hi! Thanks for reaching out. When I applied, I added my grades from 10th grade and the predicted grades from 11th (or DP1). I'm not sure if that answers your question, feel free to reach out if you have any more!

      @@marcosricopeng ah what I meant was whether you received a grade level of 1-7 for your courses. I’m in Canada so our marks are all percentages so I’m a bit unsure of how that gets converted.

    Hey Marcos! I have a question and I’ll be very glad if you respond me. I’m also an international student who wanna apply to us universities (USC and Berkeley are my dream schools btw). The problem is that I come from a third-world country where there is no high school extracurricular activities and where it’s very difficult to find the good people ... Do you know if the admissions officer consider the fact that you came from a poor-intellectual country? ( I mean where they don’t give any importance to talent or passions, only grades matter). I searched for clubs or associations where I can exerce my passions, but no results :( .At this point, I don’t know what to do...
    Also if you’re asking my EC’s are:
    -Soccer (titular at the local team before the pandemic)
    -Game design at home. (I’m planning to create a soccer video game)
    -Beat-making at home
    -Imma start a UA-cam channel this summer where I’m gonna talk about science, biology, hip hop, soccer, robotics...
    -Imma publish a book about my country’s culture
    Few awards I have:
    - National semi finalist in a French language competition (top 0.06%)(I was 12 btw #flexing)
    -Won an online biology competition
    -Won one gold medal and one silver in soccer competitions
    Sorry for exposing my life and bothering you but I’m very stressed and worried about my future!!!

    • @marcosricopeng
      @marcosricopeng  3 роки тому

      Hey! I'll try my best to give you my thoughts based on personal experience and stories from others, but in no way is this reliable nor truthful. But answering your main question, college admissions officers DEFINITELY take into account your background and accesible resources. Not everyone has the chance/opportunity to get involved and the admission officers know that. What they're trying to see is if you can make the most of what you DO have. So as long as you're exploiting the opportunities given to you in your area, they'll definitely notice. Now talking about your EC's, I've noticed that you tend to use a lot of "I will" instead of "I have". In that sense, I think the admissions officers want to know what you have done not what you will do as they don't know how reliable your word is (anybody can say they will do something but those who actually do it are few). For example, instead of waiting until the summer to start your youtube channel, why don't you start this winter break? Also, what are you planning on studying in college? You don't have to specifically know that now but if you do it's a good idea to work on stuff related to that field, it shows you're really passionate about that. From what you've told me it sounds like you're really interested in biology and soccer, maybe there's a way to get more involved in those areas? Furthermore, grades are also a big portion of the application, you want to make sure those are impeccable.
      All in all I think your main concern was wether they would notice you come from a place where there aren't many resources and to answer that question, they definitely do! But don't let that stop you from pursuing what you can and staying on top of your academics. Good luck and lmk if you need anything else!

      @@marcosricopeng Thank you A LOT for you respond. Also the reason why I don’t start a UA-cam channel right now, it’s because of my time. Online classes homeworks, school projects... It take all my time (REALLY all my time, I already studied 10 hours one day last month, no exaggeration/Also,I’m not a lazy or procrastinator student)but I’ll try in all cases!! Btw I’m gonna apply in biomedical engineering major but you already notice my interest to science and biology!! (Ps: i don’t have a large winter break because I live in a Muslim country, only 1st January)

      Oh haha damn, whenever you have time though try and do something productive! Expand and pursuit your interest and passions and it'll show on your application. I'm sure you'll do well! Keep grinding and work hard, you've got this!
