I’m headed to the river for the next four days. Thanks for a thorough refresher. I’ve lost few big ones in my day and all your points are spot on. Great reminders for me. Thanks.
Very well done Bryan! I think you covered every possible scenario with great tips and techniques for getting that big fish to the net and also good advice on the handling and release of a fish. I especially can relate to when using a weight forward flyline and a big fish beeline’s downstream ,the weight the flyline has when your flyrod is held low in the water adds a ton of weight to that already big fish and I have broken off a lot of fish in this situation. And after losing several very nice big fish I now raise the fly rod as high as I can and it really helps in fighting a heavy fish that gets way downstream on you. Great point!! Even after all these years of flyfishing I’m still learning as I go. Thanks for yet another very informative video!
Thanks Jim! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The video idea came from your question on tips for landing big fish that we covered in one of the member live streams so thank you!!!
This was an excellent, instructive video. Thanks for making it. I hooked and lost a very big trout yesterday. Wish I had seen this video sooner, but at least now I have a better idea of what I did wrong.
Yeah... losing big fish can be heartbreaking! We've all done it! But they teach us as well if we are willing to analyze what happened. Good luck next time!
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany my issue, in general when it comes to landing big trout or steelhead on a fly rod, is that I tend to get a little panicky as soon as I realize I’m hooked up with a big fish. I’m immediately afraid I’m going to lose the fish, so I don’t take command of the fight, instead letting the fish do that. And you know the results of that! Your video, along with my successful experience fighting big saltwater fish on spinning tackle, when I’m not even thinking about breaking them off, helped me to figure that out. So thanks again, and I’ll look forward to your next video.
The more big fish you hook in rivers the more comfortable you get. My heart used to pound out of my chest when I hooked up with a steelhead... and rightfully so. They're incredible fish. I had a day this spring where I hooked up with a BIG brown on a streamer in fast water on a local stream. It would have been the fish of the year for me. It was a really tough spot and I didn't have a good place to land it because of the fast water. He rolled a few too many times near the surface in the fast water and I put too much pressure on him when he was doing that. I should have eased pressure to get him to settle down a bit and moved myself into a better position to find slower water. Like I said, each fish we lose can teach us! Good luck out there this year!
Practical, common sense advice combined with great explanation and experience ! Excellent!

Super informative! Very much appreciated!
Thanks! I'm glad it was helpful! Hope it helps you land some big ones! :)
the closed captions say “urine imping” instead of “euro nymphing” and maybe we’re all overthinking AI taking all our jobs
I know... it does that to me on all of my euro nymphing videos! I even try to correct it by typing it out and it still doesn't work... oh well!
