Eh. Each of those videos are valid. It’s about what works for them and a lot of people get a kick out of them. Saying ”DON’T DO THIS!” is just clickbaity.

Agreed. Peopple should play how they enjoy and use videos like this (and the dozens like it) as a buffet of ideas and pick and choose what works for them. I did enjoy how he said “D&D” (even philisophically) and the talked explicitly about ICRPG. Also, his DM kits excludes any rules, character sheets or pregens, etc…

just use duct tape and wd40, maybe a swiss army knife.
Carve your minis, Use duct tape to make the maps, and spray problem players with wd40.

I've just bought fillable template cards.
Have a set for spells for my players for those that may struggle to remember their spells, Creatures/NPCs cards, Magic Items, and even for weather

Cool video! I didn't necessarily "agree" with some of the content- but different things work for different folks. I hope this video is super helpful for those that want a more minimal approach 💗💗 I also appreciate the direct mention of how it may work / not work for certain disabilities.
Also, as someone that's trying to get into DMing and more involved campaigns- I love learning from all sorts of players! Even if all I take a way from it is that "I don't think this would do well with my party", that's still knowledge learned to me.
Sending much love to the creator(s)! 🙏☺

So, I'm a bit of a nuisance with this, but some folks (not a lot!) have aphantasia - The lack of a mind's eye, so-to-speak. I have only ever met one person with it, but they very much appreciated the visual aids of a map and minis. The cards are probably the minimum I could get away with running a game for them, but I am glad to see them here. I feel like a lot of GM minimalist kits lean so hard on Theater of the Mind that they exclude those who have aphantasia and stunted imaginations alike!

Disagree about cards, but so true about bags

Modern tech is killing rolegaming. Let me explain. I grew up with books. I read voraciously. I have an imagination that I think has no limits. I can run 10 plus NPCs in my head at the same time. NPCs with no documentation. And remain consistent. I like randomizer tools. But I can just as easily make everything up in real time. I'm a writer, I write romance novels. I'm also a historian, and scientist. But I like unplanned. It's fun. I can play diceless, but humans being humans, prefer the brutal honesty of dice. "Sorry Frank, you missed, the Orc didn't, that's 18 hits, which is more than your remaining 5. Your PC is dead. All the way dead." Dice while fair, are also hard to fudge if rolled in the open. Players hate being railroaded. The answer, there is no pre planned adventure. No pre made dungeon. The players can't have played something before, that never was before. That's why I like decks of random quests, decks of random terrain, decks of random dungeon designs. Even I don't know in advance. But so many today grew up with video game role games. D&D is a paper product, not a digital product. It was a players and DMG and monster book. You didn't have phrases like 100 hours to complete. I played one campaign, where I initiated the world, ran it for a year, then handed it to a friend DM, and it was their world. It turned out I moved, returned years later, and that game world was still going. So I rejoined it. But when role gaming is all pre decided, pre programmed and people are increasingly less inclined to read good fiction, their imaginations also suffer. I don't like digital devices at the table. Write your PC on paper. If you don't have the game book, you don't have the game book. I use actual dice. I don't need a digital die roller. I can use cards if dice are a problem. But the thing is, the game is only as good as the players playing it. And if they are faces on a screen, you've just lost the one thing that created the hobby. Goofy teens gathered in someone's house playing at stupid hours on a weekend. Scarfing pop and chips. Laughing at useless dicerolls. And experiencing a social atmosphere that a computer can't deliver. I've actually played in groups where some of the group was having sex with others of the group, and you could tell by their in game interactions. You lose that on modern devices. My minimalist DM kit has only one tool I require, my imagination. I can make it ALL up if my players wish it. The dice, paper and pencil, and a game book are really all I require at the table. I'm happy with Shadowdark mainly because it only needs that one book. That and a deck of DM's Apprentice Cards and I'm off to the races. I can run this in a cafeteria, a coffee shop, a school room after school, anywhere there is a minor table and sufficient chairs. Actually, a table and enough chairs is my biggest DM tool requirement. My 62 year old legs have long since stopped being ok with sitting on the floor in someone's basement.
